Crackle and Pop using CarPlay

I am having an issue with audio quality when using CarPlay. This issue affects playback using both iTunes and the Podcast app. Every 3 - 15 minutes the audio will skip for about half a second and very often, but not always, comes back highly distorted with crackling and popping. Very occasionally it will skip and not experience an audio drop.


The only work around I have found is to either turn off the car and restart it, or unplug the phone from the USB and re-plug it. This works until the next skip, which are occurring more frequently in recent days.


Switching to a different podcast or album results in a clean signal until another skip occurs. Switching from an affected podcast or album to a clean one, then back again, does not fix the issue. Once corrupted the audio remains corrupted until the phone is disconnected then reconnected.


I have tried the following with no success -

  • Rebooting the phone
  • Using a new lightning cable

SOLVED!!!


Hello everyone. First of all I wanna say I’m sorry about any English mistakes. I am Brazilian so not a native speaker.


I was having the same crackling and popping problem with an iPhone X in a Mercedes Benz A200. My first guess it was a hardware issue, so I got to an authorized apple dealer and asked for warranty. They exchanged instantly for a new iPhone. The phone was working fine when I have installed as a new iPhone, but when I reseted and installed from a iCloud backup the crackling came back, what made me suspicious the problem was a software and not hardware problem. I got in touch with apple support by phone and dozens of tests were made. We got to the conclusion that the issue was some corrupted file in my backup, so I have backed up my photos, contacts and notes in iCloud once again, reseted the iPhone and installed as a new iPhone logged to my iCloud account. This way, I lost every files and settings I had but manteined the photos, notes and contact (they automatically download once you log in iCloud). I did this 3 days ago and didn’t have the problem one single time yet!!! Hope work for you guys too!!

Did you at least tell them what iOS version and phone you are using?

Also what about the type of vehicle and stereo head unit being used?


I'm ready to upgrade my iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch on a contract and if I cannot get this glitch fixed by the time The Pixel 3 comes out I may dump Apple completely. I won't spend $2000 on a phone that is going to have the same glitch. I'm already hearing reports of the XS Max not charging from sleep so it's not looking good.


Maybe I'll give them 2 more software updates to get this right, I really don't have much faith in Apple right now and I wonder what type of Beta Testers apple is recruiting. Lately it just appears to be people that like to brag about having the latest gadgets rather than actually testing the device and finding bugs.

The only thing keeping me with Apple is my Apple Watch. I use it all the time. Android wear is terrible. I also prefer CarPlay when it’s working (especially now it has Waze).

Yes, the watch is also also a major factor keeping me there. I have so much invested in their hardware. A change would be hard but not impossible.

Still no good news yet from my Apple Support person. The new iPhones are out but I am reluctant to buy one if the issue isn't fixed for me. I have bought a Android phone which works flawlessly with Android Auto so I can navigate and listen to music without the pops and clicks.


If this issue continues on into the new year then I might skip buying the new one and look at some of the higher Android alternatives.


BTW - I am also onto my 3rd Apple Support Person. Whether this means it's progressed up the technical chain or not, I have no idea?

I have an update and it’s that things are getting worse. I got my Hyundai Tucson serviced last Friday. I have no idea what they did (if anything) to the sound system but now any time I use Google maps or make a phone call or use instagram or twitter whilst the phone is plugged into apple car play (ie: whilst parked at my daughter’s school I often use these apps to kill time - whilst not driving)...anyway, every time now my AM radio goes all fuzzy. I have to turn the key off the ignition, unplug the phone, to get the radio to go back to normal. ***????
I have just updated the iOS so we’ll see if that does anything. I’m so over this. My apple support guy is super nice and friendly and emails me weekly to say that nothing’s been done and they have no clue how to fix it. I’m about ready to throw both my phone and the car into the river and start anew with Samsung and a different car.

Nothing wrong with the car except the radio head unit having issues with Apples operating system. Works fine with Android Auto so it's Apple that has to get their act together. Right now if it was easier to swap out the head unit with another brand I would ask for that but I don't see it happening, or having one that will fit and have all the functionality intact.


Obviously not all radio head units are affected or this would be a Worldwide problem. No-one has told me on here if we are only Australians experiencing this problem. If that was the case then I would request a US head unit be fitted to the car. There shouldn't be much difference. Hyundai should be putting pressure on Apple to "FIX" this issue as it's giving them a bad name.

iOS 12.1 will not fix it.

Yes, post got nuked. I cannot get a resolution to this issue. I have spoken to 4 different Customer Care people and even though they say they are taking this seriously, I am walking away at the end of the week and buying a Galaxy Note 9. My patience is done. I've even contacted Hyundai and they have spoken to me about the issue and said it's a Apple issue and that Hyundai will notify their customers once a fix is found.


My posts have all been innocent in nature to try and resolve this issue so I would stay a happy Apple customer. It's now too little too late. If I cannot even ask people a simple question in relation to an Apple product, new or old then I am done.


Thanks for all your help. I will monitor this thread and others to see if it's fixed in the future.
