10.13.4 breaks DisplayLink. Will there be a fix?

The most recent update to macOS, 10.13.4, breaks video over USB as used by products which connect using DisplayLink drivers.

My touch screen AKAI MPC Touch (music production hardware) is unusable with this latest update. I am aware that many, many others are affected, particularly those using additional monitors with DisplayLink.

The question is whether this is an intentional policy decision by Apple, or an oversight which will be remedied in a future update?

Please respect users enough to give a clear, prompt answer on this. Many mac users are now faced with having expensive hardware which is unusable, and worse, being blocked from working and creating.

iMac, macOS High Sierra (10.13.4)

Some hopefully good news from the Displaylink forums:

"Our team has made some solid progress towards finding a solution which would restore extended display support in a future release of macOS. We are still unable to provide a timeframe or a date for release of this solution.

Meanwhile, we have been developing a partial workaround solution which would add one extended USB display (up to 1080p) on macOS 10.13.4. We are aiming to release a preview version of this driver in around 7 to 10 days. The precise date depends on how the solution performs under deeper and wider testing, and how long it takes to resolve remaining issues. We expect the driver to enable one extended 1080p screen, and one cloned screen connected to a DisplayLink device. There may be some other functional limitations.

The new alpha driver will be posted online as soon as possible."

My last post was removed by apple because i mentioned beta testing software. and you can't talk about beta testing software on this particular forum, but please know that there's has been great progress with the fix for DisplayLink the issue caused by 10.13.4+ has been fixed. but the remedy will be unavailable until the release of 10.14 in the fall.

Hope this helps

You are basically asking for Apple to support a feature that was never supported.

Displaylink made those usb docks carry video (a feature the OS never supported) by hacking using nonpublic APIs.

Well, I guess Apple could modify the OS to support video over legacy USB, but if this did not happen earlier, why would it now, when USB-C is available?

You can still, as always, connect multiple displays to your macs. Use the supported connectivity options - miniDisplayPort, Thunderbolt, HDMI. Prior to USB-C, USB was never one of them.

Apple should at least work to fix or we'll move everyone over to Windows 10 as they can't work on Macs.

Move to Window 10. I'm sure nobody here cares.

You chose a completely unsupported technology that relied on non-public API's which required an unchanging video architecture.

The video architecture has been in what seems to be a full re-code all the way through High Sierra. Apple has no responsibility to keep legacy code active because one hardware manufacturer decided to ignore Apple's guidance.

so i don't know if this information will be useful or not. a friend of mine has a brother who works for apple and he said that apple is aware that this is a problem and that it was not intentionally caused apple changed the way display drivers work to support newer eGPU technology on the newer USB C / Thunderbolt 3 computes and the issue with display link was a "Friendly Causality" and byproduct of this change. i asked if he know if there was a solution to this in the works or if apple was going to fix it and he didn't have an answer for me, but told me he would let me know if he found out anything more on his end.

Thanks for starting this thread....So MANY people don't get this problem.

Both Apple and DisplayLink are EQUALLY responsible for this issue. Apple for not respecting a LARGE segment of their user and developer population, and basically making their solution not work. this broke other things like DUET also, a great iPad app that turns it in to a 2nd Monitor.

Apple, get your head out of your rear and help solve this problem!!!

You missed the point entirely. It is about user respect (ironic). Please respond to the original posters question:

Sure.

Nobody here speaks for Apple. Apple isn't here. We have no idea what their policy is and it is against the terms of use here to speculate on Apple's policies.

If you want to complain about it, open a blog and whine away. If you want technical support in order to fix the problem, you'll have to talk to DisplayLink. They are the only ones who can fix it, if it is at all possible. That's what happens when you circumvent the OS in order to sell a product that you can't hope to ever maintain.

Apple:

This is beyond disruptive to your endusers and beyond inconsiderate that a solution has yet to present itself. From small businesses to medium-sized, we're all feeling the effects of the Displaylink driver issues. Like so many, I now have hundreds of dollars worth of useless (and recently purchased, I might add) third-party hardware that is rendered 100% useless in regards to the specific function I purchased it for in the first place. I am extremely close to ditching the Macbook for a PC because my need for dual-monitor functionality trumps anything the Macbook can provide me. Inconveniencing the customers even further by making them downgrade to the previous OS is not a solution. It's a vailed attempt at saying you could care less. Prove us otherwise.

tried 2 different USB-C 3.1 docks with 2 monitors connected via USB-C cables

Stop using USB-C cables. Pushing video over USB on a Mac has never been supported by Apple.

The USB-C ports on the new Macs are not just Type C USB. They are also support DisplayPort and Thunderbolt, both of which are supported video protocols.

You need USB-C to DisplayPort or USB-C to Thunderbolt. There are adapters for most video cables, including all of them in a single Dock

Depending on the Mac you have, it can support one to four external monitors from the built-in ports.

So for Clarity I am actually trying to use 4 monitors i was able to with the use of Displaylink I used two USB 3 to dual HDMI adapters, which gave me 4 HDMI Outputs.

I am currently able to get three monitors out of my MacBook Pro one through HDMI, one through thunderbolt 2 and one through an Apple TV, with air display.

Macbook Pros do support dual thunderbolt 2 for video my coworker has a 2013 MacBook Pro Retina and she is able to use both thunderbolt ports together, i tried to use two with and without the the addition of the HDMI port and was only able to ever use 1 at a time.

I would love to be able to get all 4 of my monitors working again but for now i am glad to have 3 working until they fix the issue.
