10.13.4 breaks DisplayLink. Will there be a fix?

The most recent update to macOS, 10.13.4, breaks video over USB as used by products which connect using DisplayLink drivers.

My touch screen AKAI MPC Touch (music production hardware) is unusable with this latest update. I am aware that many, many others are affected, particularly those using additional monitors with DisplayLink.

The question is whether this is an intentional policy decision by Apple, or an oversight which will be remedied in a future update?

Please respect users enough to give a clear, prompt answer on this. Many mac users are now faced with having expensive hardware which is unusable, and worse, being blocked from working and creating.

Some hopefully good news from the Displaylink forums:

"Our team has made some solid progress towards finding a solution which would restore extended display support in a future release of macOS. We are still unable to provide a timeframe or a date for release of this solution.

Meanwhile, we have been developing a partial workaround solution which would add one extended USB display (up to 1080p) on macOS 10.13.4. We are aiming to release a preview version of this driver in around 7 to 10 days. The precise date depends on how the solution performs under deeper and wider testing, and how long it takes to resolve remaining issues. We expect the driver to enable one extended 1080p screen, and one cloned screen connected to a DisplayLink device. There may be some other functional limitations.

The new alpha driver will be posted online as soon as possible."

Sooooo, no fix from what I gather after reading dozens of threads.

I just upgraded to High Sierra (from Yosemite, as so much of my graphics software no longer runs on the new OS) on my aging MacBook Pro late 2011. I’ve used for the past several years a USB to HDMI connector with external display, which now no longer works 😠 Not to mention funky issues with USB in general acting up. I’m glad I’ve not updated my iMac which I have 3 HDMI and large screen TV hooked up and all work just fine.User uploaded file

Apple is aware of all products that are made to work on their hardware. While they may not support it, they knew this would stop certain functionalities. It is obvious they are back (did they ever stop) old ways of breaking things so we buy new. They did this with Mac OS 9.2.2 and Sonnet Power PC upgrades. We were able to find a solution then, and we will now (I hope).

Apple clearly knew that there was a large eco-system of products dependent on this feature of their OS. They chose to change this functionality in their latest update (in my original question I asked if it was an oversight - in fact it must have been a conscious choice).

That does raise various questions about how important certain parts of the mac user community are to them, whether they are looking to impose an upgrade path on users, etc.

In the meantime though, the question is: will we be able to use our devices in the same way after a future update, or not?

Just adding my voice to implore Apple to at least cooperate with DisplayLink on this. Of course, we're all pestering DisplayLink about it constantly. But this is a big deal to many, many users.

Thousands of people use DisplayLink for docks and external monitors. You have us in a corner. You've removed standard video ports from MBPs, reduced the overall number of ports available, and don't manufacture branded docks with multimonitor support. Sure, I can spend hundreds of dollars and go out and buy two more HDMI monitors and USB-C > HDMI dongles to replace my DisplayLink ones. However, the number of monitors I can attach that way is limited - I must continue to connect power to the computer and a USB hub for peripherals. Dongle **** just continues to get worse. DisplayLink was an amazing solution, particularly for portable monitors.

You missed the point entirely. It is about user respect (ironic). Please respond to the original posters question:

This is beyond disruptive to your endusers and beyond inconsiderate that a solution has yet to present itself. From small businesses to medium-sized, we're all feeling the effects of the Displaylink driver issues. Like so many, I now have hundreds of dollars worth of useless (and recently purchased, I might add) third-party hardware that is rendered 100% useless in regards to the specific function I purchased it for in the first place. I am extremely close to ditching the Macbook for a PC because my need for dual-monitor functionality trumps anything the Macbook can provide me. Inconveniencing the customers even further by making them downgrade to the previous OS is not a solution. It's a vailed attempt at saying you could care less. Prove us otherwise.

Apple is not reading here. If you want them to know how you feel, use the feedback page:

I've had a ViewSonic monitor connected to my MacBook Pro for several years using a DB15 to Thunderbolt connector. It's been working fine using the Display function from the System preferences. Nothing fancy just plug and play ... that is until the upgrade to MacOS 10.13.4.

I was thinking of upgrading to a newer MacBook ... but I'm going to wait till this gets resolved. I'm too used to the extra real estate a second display provides, and this is certainly a show stopper for me.
