10.13.4 breaks DisplayLink. Will there be a fix?

The most recent update to macOS, 10.13.4, breaks video over USB as used by products which connect using DisplayLink drivers.

My touch screen AKAI MPC Touch (music production hardware) is unusable with this latest update. I am aware that many, many others are affected, particularly those using additional monitors with DisplayLink.

The question is whether this is an intentional policy decision by Apple, or an oversight which will be remedied in a future update?

Please respect users enough to give a clear, prompt answer on this. Many mac users are now faced with having expensive hardware which is unusable, and worse, being blocked from working and creating.

iMac, macOS High Sierra (10.13.4)

Some hopefully good news from the Displaylink forums:

"Our team has made some solid progress towards finding a solution which would restore extended display support in a future release of macOS. We are still unable to provide a timeframe or a date for release of this solution.

Meanwhile, we have been developing a partial workaround solution which would add one extended USB display (up to 1080p) on macOS 10.13.4. We are aiming to release a preview version of this driver in around 7 to 10 days. The precise date depends on how the solution performs under deeper and wider testing, and how long it takes to resolve remaining issues. We expect the driver to enable one extended 1080p screen, and one cloned screen connected to a DisplayLink device. There may be some other functional limitations.

The new alpha driver will be posted online as soon as possible."

Funny... Apple won't let me open the same discussion/rant on another post...

I'm terribly upset because Apple decides to patch up their OS on the very EXPENSIVE Macs that we buy and break their compatibility with other companies hardware, so that they can force our hand into buying more Apple hardware. This *****, it ***** a lot. For me, an IT professional that has to switch between his personal Mac and work PC at his home office, to do his work, I need a generic USB docking station that can handle connecting to both Windows and Mac systems. And then Apple decides to break something and not support it, nor help vendors fix their drivers to make their hardware work. This *****. Now my Mac can't use multiple screens nor connect to all my USB devices because there is no sense on using it with the USB docking station.

When does Apple plan to fix this problem? OR at least let users that do not use Time Machine backups, to roll back their OS to the previous version, and be able to continue working with the hardware they want to use with their MacOS? Right now I have over $700 of IT equipment that I cannot use with my Mac due to Apple's reluctance on fixing this problem.

No more Apple products for me. I already invested in too many iPhones, iPads, Apple Tv, etc. No more!

Luis I take it you don't work in a Corporate environment that's full of Targus universal docks and are trying to co-exist with Windows 7-8-10.... This is a nightmare for our Mac fleet to co-exist in that I've had to now block the last two Apple updates or people can't use the shared environment. Apple should at least work to fix or we'll move everyone over to Windows 10 as they can't work on Macs. My 2 cents. Cheers

never seen a monitor with a USB connection for video.

That's what DisplayLink provides. Video over USB.

Your Mac supports up to four external monitors, one on each Thunderbolt 3 port.

If your cable doesn't work, make sure the manufacturer certifies it works with your Mac to push video over DisplayPort.

You don't need DisplayLink to connect any monitor to your Mac. If you cannot get video over DisplayPort or Thunderbolt directly from your Mac to your monitor, then you need to contact Apple.

Apple supports a single monitor on each bus.

Fine and dandy, if Apple didn't Limit the number of monitors you could connect this way also. I went and bought 2 HDMI adapters and hooked them up to my mac and guess what only one at a time worked and if i closed the lid on my mac to try and force both to work, my MacBook just shuts off and goes to sleep. There is something within 10.13.4+ that is creating display issues not just with Displaylink.

I have used two external displays with my mac simultaneously, and of course that is supposed to work. I don't have access to external displays at the moment, being away from home for a few days. Can you tell us what your mac model and the adapters you are using? I would like to do some more tests when I go back home.

I am using a 2015 MacBook Pro model A1502 I use One monitor on the built in hdmi port and I tried to use 2 mini display ports to hdmi adapters in the thunderbolt 2 ports but only 1 adapter works at a time however I did find a work around I got a gen2 Apple TV for cheap online and able to get a third monitor to work until display link is fixed but I thought that path the thought for sure the thunderbolt 2 sockets would give me video on both at the same time

If I understand correctly, you can use two external displays, but wanted to use three - one directly connected to the HDMI port, and two with adapters in the two Thunderbolt 2 ports, is that right?

I don't think that is supported. Here is what I got from the Mactracker application for your mac:

Display SupportSupports an HDMI-compatible device, including 4K, while using one Thunderbolt display or support for two Thunderbolt displays
