When entering full screen in safari video distorts

So this issue has been happening for a few months now. I was in the beta program for Sierra, and High Sierra OS when this problem started. I un-enrolled from the beta program and installed the regular version of High Sierra and the problem went away. After an update a few days ago the problem came back. I'll try to explain this the best I can. when i'm on youtube or other websites where full screen is available the video will basically go diagonal. It doesn't always happen but it does about 60% of the time. if i move the cursor it will look normal but then goes back to being distorted. It's really annoying, I reset the PRAM thinking that might help, but it still happens. It was fixed after I initially left the beta program and installed a normal version of Mac OS. But now after the last two updates 10.13.4 the problem has come back. I've also noticed on youtube if i change the resolution to 1080p, or 480p the problem usually goes away, it's mainly on 720p videos that the issue happens. I tried to take a screen shot but it did not capture the problem correctly, so I had to take a picture. If you need anymore information let me know, thanks again. User uploaded fileIt's really frustrating and any help would be great!

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. Also try the Safe Mode.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

Safe Mode - About

Safe Mode Startup – El Capitan. also Sierra

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

Hello, my VPN is currently disabled. Should i try uninstalling it for now? I did try disabling all my plugins, which are: Adobe Flash Player (which was already disabled), AdobeAAMDetector (i think that's for photoshop updates), and Google Earth plugin. The problem still persists after disabling plugins. The past few times i've logged into my Mac a dialog box pops up and says something along the line of "AAM updater is not optimized for this Mac, it needs to be updated by the developer". Do you think that could be related to my issue? Is there anything else you think i should try? Thanks again for all your help!

Apr 27, 2018 3:37 PM in response to Eric Root

I opened AAM to see if I could update the application, it updated automatically and closed. I tried to reopen to check the current version. Now it has a question mark over the app icon in my launchpad, and doesn't open. Either way it seems like i'm not having the problem anymore. I'll keep testing it the rest of the night but i tried around 10 videos, opened multiple tabs and tried then tried more. It seems like it's working now, I haven't had the issue once. I'll post again if anything changes, and once again, thank you.

So unfortunately I spoke too soon. It started happening again pretty much right after I posted my last reply. I did however figure out a work around. I changed my resolution from "default for display" to "scaled, 1280 x 720". While it's not the best resolution it does stop the distortion. I still wish I had a way to fix it completely, but for now it will have to do. Either way, thanks again for helping me out.

Heya,

So I have this issue too and it *****! With my testing the issue seems to be isolated to Safari displaying full res 720p video as you already pointed out. Can you please try playing the same YouTube video fullscreen at 720p in Safari and then in Chrome? Does the problem go away when you fullscreen Chrome and immediately return when you use Safari? It does for me.

What seemed to reliably fix the issue in Safari for me was this:

System Preferences > Displays > Resolution = Scaled and select 1280x720.

Does that work for you? I would say something is borked with how Safari interprets full res 720p in anything but the system 720p setting above... As I said, I can watch it on Chrome without any issues what so ever so it's not the OS or display. It must be a Safari issue.

How do you report this to Apple? It's super frustrating.

Apr 29, 2018 8:14 AM in response to scotteffone

I downloaded chrome and and tried playing the same video, it definitely works fine in chrome. I did find that changing my resolution to 1280x720 did work for me as well.

I really don't know how to report it to Apple. I'm sure someone in the forums here knows how to do that. I was in the beta program and they give you a feedback app that collects data and reports the problem to the developers. I actually just checked and I still have the feedback assistant app. I'm going to try to send them the issue we're having. I'm not sure if it will work since I'm on a regular version of MacOS. I'll report back in a little while with what i find out.

Also I agree it seems like a problem with Safari. The weird thing is that this problem happened while I was on a beta release, and I got so fed up that I reinstalled a regular version. Everything was fine until a week ago with the last two updates. I searched the internet for months trying to find if someone else had the same problem. I feel a little better that it's not just me, I thought maybe I broke something.

I have just noticed the same problem on my MacBook Pro 2015 - the difference is that I am getting it on iTunes when watching certain movies in full screen. Just like you, if I move the cursor, the diagonal distortion disappears but then returns a second later. I have tried setting up a test account, resetting pram, repairing permissions etc. all to no avail. I notice that the distortion never occurs if the movie is playing at anything less than full screen. Also it doesn't occur if I open and play the movie with Quicktime instead of iTunes. Not sure what else to try but my main worry is whether or not this could be a graphics card/logic board problem. I really hope not!
