Photos Crashes When Adding Titles

Howdy,

I'm on a MacBook Pro (15 inch, 2017) with 2.9GHZ Intel Core i7, 16GB 2133MHZ LPDDR3 Memory, running Sierra v10.12.6. Mac Hard Drive is 1TB with 744GB available. Photos version is 2.0 (3161.4.140). Photo library is 34GB. My photo library is local. I don't store photos in iCloud.

Within the past 3 months, I can no longer add titles to my photos. I can import (from phone or computer). I can export. I can create albums. But, suddenly, after an album created in Jan 2018 (which is titled), I can no longer add a title. As soon as I click under the picture to create a title, Photos explodes. If I try to edit albums that I used to be able to edit, Photos explodes.

Troubleshooting:

  • I tried to find an update to Photos but was unable to see anything in the App Store. I have performed all available updates on my computer other than High Sierra. More on that below.
  • I have repaired my Photo library numerous (many many) times. Repair doesn't solve the problem.
  • I have restored from a Time Machine backup created last year and problem exists now when it didn't exist then (those photos are titled but can't be changed).
  • I have created a smaller test Photo library with just one album, using pictures that I had already titled. Photos explodes.
  • I have copied the smaller test library to an external hard drive and told Photos to launch using that library, Photos explodes.
  • I have copied my home directory/Pictures/Photo Library to an external drive, logged off my computer, had my husband login to my computer, launch photos using library on external drive and the problem doesn't exist. I can title the pictures under his account.
  • I moved my Photo Library to my husband's home directory/Pictures/Photo Library and launched Photos. No problem. I can create titles under his account on my computer.
  • I created a small photo library with newer photos from my camera on a different (very old) Mac and did not have a problem with my id or those photos. So I don't believe it's a particular photo album that is causing the problem (or a particular photo).
  • The problem seems to be something with my library files or preferences or something specific to my account. Yes? No?
  • I can create the error log generated when Photos explodes and have reviewed it but, quite honestly, I don't understand it. I can post pieces of it if someone thinks that will help.
  • I don't want to upgrade to High Sierra because I don't think it's an OS problem (I have seen many posts re: issues with Photos on High Sierra). If Photos exploded on my current OS using my husband's account, I would be more apt to do the upgrade. But it works for him, not for me, on the same computer using the same Photos app.

I will call Apple later today when I have more time but I thought I would ask for help from the community. I did search and reviewed a number of the existing Photo issues but I didn't see this specific problem. Any help is appreciated.

I hope I don't confuse you with this formatting. I copied both reports into Excel and messed around with the lines to make the reports align so I could easily see the differences. But getting from Excel into here was a bit more complex than I expected. Here are the highlights.

My Account had these lines and his did not:

Heavy RAM usage - This machine is using a large amount of RAM.

Apps crashing - There have been numerous app crashes.

Clean up - There are orphan files that could be removed

Unsigned Files:

I thought, it might be a duplicate font or incompatible font as well, but it would have to be a font installed in the user home folder, since the crash is not a system wide problem and does not happen from another user account.

6 com.apple.UIFoundation 0x00007fffab43cbd1 -[NSLayoutManager(NSPrivate) _resizeTextViewForTextContainer:] + 142

But it is clearly a crash in the layout manager, when the text size is computed, as seen in the crash log.

If it is a custom font, Photos should not crash, when the Mac has been started in Safe Mode:

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support

The local fonts in the user account are here:

I mean -- aren't my husband and I using the same version of Photos and the same version of the OS while on the same machine?

Yes, but you may be using the computer differently - different System Preferences, different startup items, and you may be using different third-party applications, that can trigger problems.

Some third-party applications will install kernel extensions, that modify the system. And if they are incompatible incompatible, they can cause crashes in applications, that do not seem to be related to this problematic application at all.

Reinstalling the system will usually remove such system modifications, while installing a system upgrade or update may not. The upgrades or updates to newer system versions are usually incremental and build onto the existing system parts, and any bad code may persist, even after the update. That is why I suggested to reinstall the system by booting into the recovery partition (OS X: About OS X Recovery). Reinstalling this way will replace the system completely, it is quick and easy. You do not need to wipe the mac for a clean install. Your other applications and user data will not be modified. But naturally, do it only after making a current backup, so you can revert to the current version if unexpected problems should occur. And I would wait, until you are at home and have a stable Wi-Fi.

Etrecheck has been tested by many users here and is a great tool to make an inventory of the installation. It has been developed by our fellow poster Etresoft, to help us troubleshoot system trouble. The big problem when trying to help someone here is, that we cannot see the device in question, we have to ask questions and tell the users where to look. Etrecheck is running scripts to look for clues to the problem.

May 4, 2018 5:41 AM in response to KShortmar

Compare the two etrecheck Reports.

Look in particular at the sections in the two reports with the titles

System Launch Agents, System Launch Daemons, Launch Agents, Launch Daemons, User Launch Agents, User Login Items.

Are there any differences ? Items that are marked as "not loaded" in your husbands report, but loaded in your own report?

If yes, then copy and paste these parts into your next reply here.

To léonie -- Not only am I not using LaCie desktop manager, I didn't know it was running. I probably loaded it when I installed some external hard drives that are LaCie products. Should I try to uninstall it? Is that even possible?

To Old Toad -- Here is my report. I will do another reply with my husband's.

Problem: Apps are crashing

Description:

Photos crashes when I try to input text as a title to a picture. I never see the text box. As soon as I click under a picture, Photos crashes. This doesn’t occur for my husband when he logins into my computer. Happens on my account, not his. Same Photos app. Same computer. Occurs for different photo libraries as well so it’ doesn’t appear to be library specific. I have repaired library.

I tried to find an update to Photos but was unable to see anything in the App Store.

Phots is a part if the system and updated or reinstalled by reinstalling or updating the system.

I can create the error log generated when Photos explodes and have reviewed it but, quite honestly, I don't understand it. I can post pieces of it if someone thinks that will help.

Yes, please post the first 50 lines of the error log. It might give us a clue.

You already have narrowed down the issue nicely. It is good to know, that Photos is working correctly in your husband's user account. So it may be a startup item or a preferences file in your user account. Are you using any third-party applications in your user account, that are not used in your husband's account? For example, any tools that help you typing and editing?

Apr 30, 2018 4:49 AM in response to léonie

To answer the first question you asked -- I could add titles from the Info panel. Very interesting. I suppose I can work like this but it is a bit annoying. Requires two mouse clicks instead of one. But at least I can add titles. Thank you for this! I didn't realize that I could add titles this way, although now that I know, it seems a bit obvious.

Second -- thanks for the tidbit about accessing my home Library directory from the View options. Didn't know this. I always used a diff approach but your suggestion has the Library directory permanently in my home directory list. Or that's the way it seems now. Cool. Thanks!

Third -- I moved the directory and the .plist file to my Desktop. I didn't delete anything. Restarted. Launched Photos as instructed from my Pictures/Photos Library. Had a minor heart attack when I didn't see ANY of my titles/captions for ANY of my photo albums, including the ones I had previously captioned before Photos started to explode. But I played around and eventually found them all by viewing metadata/titles. Whew!

Lastly -- the problem still exists, unfortunately. When I click below the picture, in the "untitled" gray area, Photos crashes. Any other suggestions? I can still research what I have vs what my husband has re: logins because Photos doesn't crash for him. I also have opened a ticket with Apple and they are waiting for me to call back to start that process. I just haven't had time to do this yet. I suspect I will need to block out a chunk of time.

Thank you for your help and for the knowledge sharing!

OT, great to see you back here. I'm completely puzzled. The original post has already a very long trouble shooting list. KShortmar has been very thorough. The library is working when using a different user account. And it has been repaired already several times. Restoring from backup does not work. A new library did not work on the new Mac in the current user account, only on the old Mac.

I still think, it must be a system issue, that is only causing problems in the current user account, perhaps in combination with start-up items. The permissions on the home folder have already been fixed, the Photos preferences trashed.

It would be good to see the differences between the current user account and the account, where Photos is working correctly.

Perhaps Etrecheck could give us a clue, but it is now a paid application.

Third party applications , anti virus , cleaners are the reasons for crashing apps .They can be uninstalled using this method .

Go to system preferences and click on users and groups open the pad lock by entering admin name and password ( in case if it is an admin account ) , select login items , if you see app select it and click on minus sign to get deleted .

In system preferences itself click on Security and privacy , click on Accessibility then privacy select the suspicious app click on minus sign to get deleted .

Click on finder and search in Applications and download folder .

The next step would be enter in System Library .

Click on Finder , take cursor on top menu bar click on Go - Computer - Macintosh HD - Library

You have to manually search app in some folders where they reside .

1.Application Support

2.Caches

3.LaunchAgents

4.LaunchDaemons

5.Logs

6.PriviledgedHelperTools

7.Startup-items

8.Receipts

9.Preferences - the plist of app is to be removed , if there is com.apple .xxxx .plist it could also be com.apple.xxx.plist

10.Extensions

11.Frameworks

12.internet Plug -ins

13.Input Methods

14.ScriptingAdditions

Then enter in User library macOS Sierra: Library folder

Search in folders

1.Application Support

2.Caches

3.Cookies

4.Safari

5.Logs

6.Saved Application State

7.LaunchAgents

8.Internet Plug -ins

9.Input Methods

10.Preferences - com.apple.xxx.plist .

11.Containers are also to be checked .

Then again click on Finder - Go - Macintosh HD - System - Library - Frameworks - search the app remnants in Framework folder .

Right click on remnants from the above folders and move to the trash bin , restart the computer and empty the trash .
