Photos Crashes When Adding Titles

Howdy,

I'm on a MacBook Pro (15 inch, 2017) with 2.9GHZ Intel Core i7, 16GB 2133MHZ LPDDR3 Memory, running Sierra v10.12.6. Mac Hard Drive is 1TB with 744GB available. Photos version is 2.0 (3161.4.140). Photo library is 34GB. My photo library is local. I don't store photos in iCloud.

Within the past 3 months, I can no longer add titles to my photos. I can import (from phone or computer). I can export. I can create albums. But, suddenly, after an album created in Jan 2018 (which is titled), I can no longer add a title. As soon as I click under the picture to create a title, Photos explodes. If I try to edit albums that I used to be able to edit, Photos explodes.

Troubleshooting:

  • I tried to find an update to Photos but was unable to see anything in the App Store. I have performed all available updates on my computer other than High Sierra. More on that below.
  • I have repaired my Photo library numerous (many many) times. Repair doesn't solve the problem.
  • I have restored from a Time Machine backup created last year and problem exists now when it didn't exist then (those photos are titled but can't be changed).
  • I have created a smaller test Photo library with just one album, using pictures that I had already titled. Photos explodes.
  • I have copied the smaller test library to an external hard drive and told Photos to launch using that library, Photos explodes.
  • I have copied my home directory/Pictures/Photo Library to an external drive, logged off my computer, had my husband login to my computer, launch photos using library on external drive and the problem doesn't exist. I can title the pictures under his account.
  • I moved my Photo Library to my husband's home directory/Pictures/Photo Library and launched Photos. No problem. I can create titles under his account on my computer.
  • I created a small photo library with newer photos from my camera on a different (very old) Mac and did not have a problem with my id or those photos. So I don't believe it's a particular photo album that is causing the problem (or a particular photo).
  • The problem seems to be something with my library files or preferences or something specific to my account. Yes? No?
  • I can create the error log generated when Photos explodes and have reviewed it but, quite honestly, I don't understand it. I can post pieces of it if someone thinks that will help.
  • I don't want to upgrade to High Sierra because I don't think it's an OS problem (I have seen many posts re: issues with Photos on High Sierra). If Photos exploded on my current OS using my husband's account, I would be more apt to do the upgrade. But it works for him, not for me, on the same computer using the same Photos app.

I will call Apple later today when I have more time but I thought I would ask for help from the community. I did search and reviewed a number of the existing Photo issues but I didn't see this specific problem. Any help is appreciated.

First I would uninstall Symantec according to the developer's instructions. Norton software is know to not be optimized for Mac and can do more harm to performance than good.

Also uninstall the Norton Safari extension.

Next, I agree with léonie abut the LaCie software. It was responsible for 15 crashes on your Mac. Is the library located on the LaCie external HD by any chance? In any event I'd uninstall the software according to the developer's instructions.

Also I'd boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode. This will clear numerous cache files and run some maintenance scripts during boot which can only help.

Also I'd download and reapply the macOS Sierra 10.12.6 Combo Update

Rerun Etrecheck in your account and apply the Clean Up function that appears:

Clean up:

~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.symantec.NortonInstaller.plist

/Users/***/Desktop/Install Norton Security.localized/Install Norton Security.app/Contents/MacOS/Install Norton Security

Executable not found

I had time to uninstall the Norton Safari extension, uninstall LaCie Disk Manager software and boot into Safe mode. That's all I have time for right now. I am traveling starting tomorrow and don't want to make too many more changes to my computer. But I will monitor and if I can do anything else before I leave, I will (i.e. uninstall Norton Security (Symmantec) and reload some patches). And I'll post if I do. I won't attempt to reload the OS until I get back. I GREATLY appreciate the help you all are providing. For now, I do have my workaround with the Get Info / add title in Photos. Thank you!!
