VPN Connection authentication popup

I keep getting this popup over everything if I'm connected to wifi, with no vpn connected. Goes off when not connected.


I've been onto my vpn provider but they can't help. I ran a prefs script that they suggested (see below), fully deleted other vpn software, and I've run everything in TechTool Pro 9.


When I run network diagnostics I get a weird result, as I am connected to the internet (browsing fine):

Also, and I don't know if these are related, but at the same time tht this problem started I can't connect to App Store, and ITunes won't quit or see my AppleTV 2. Mail is also misbehaving. All other non-Apple software running fine. Fully ant-virus protected. After six days of troubleshooting I'm at wits end.


I connect to web sites fine with Firefox. My ISP has confirmed no problems their side.


The script:

I encountered this problem when i installed the Nord VPN app on my mac. To fix it I when to System Preferences > Network then removed Nord VPN from the left column by clicking the minus button at the bottom. I then restarted my machine and the relentless pop up has disappeared. I had to set up my Nord VPN app again after this. No telling if the bug will reappear in the future, but it seems fine for now. Fully ant-virus protected.

No positive benefits are produced by running third-party so-called Anti-Virus in your already well-protected premium quality Macintosh.


MANY problems posted in these forums are directly CAUSED by running such junkware, and are immediately resolved by proper removal of that useless resource-hogging baggage.


You can test this theory easily by restarting is Safe Mode (hold Shift at Startup). Safe Mode does a five-minute disk check, then starts up with no third-party extensions loaded. it also does not load display acceleration, so screen update will be wonky and slow.


Works great in Safe Mode, but not in regular mode, implicates your third-party extensions.

I have the same problem on our MacBook Pro and occurred after a fresh installation of NordVPN. Laptop is crippled until I login to Keychain access every time the computer is logged into. Partial solution thus far is:


1. neagent prompts for Keychain password to store confidential information from NordVPN in my keychain. Correct password is added, but is not accepted. Subsequently pressing 'deny' results in VPN connection pop-up appearing and not disappearing.

2. I open Keychain Access, I click the open padlock to lock, re-click padlock to unlock, and then add keychain password when prompted (which is accepted).

3. I am then reprompted by neagent for my Keychain password for NordVPN and this is now accepted.


Unfortunately I have to go through this every time I re-login, but at least it is allowing VPN conection and removal of popups.

I also have Bitdefender so I thought I had pretty good protection.

MacOS protects itself VERY well against spontaneous attacks. It don't need no BitDefender to do that.


But only your vigilance can protect you from malware that uses "Trojan Horse" tactics to fool you into getting it installed.


For a quick check, any Users here use MalwareBytes to Scan, but far fewer suggest you leave it active at all times.


Also, etrecheck provides a lot of malware detection, and also reports on performances issues as well.

I had same problem on my Mac after installing Mojave. I have NordVPN subscription. And my NordVPN app was NordVPN IKE from iTunes (AppStore}.


i couldn’t find a solution and contacted to NordVPN. They helped me and the problem solved.


  1. they told me below but it didn’t work for me


Please follow these steps to reset your Mac OS X keychain passwords:


1. Shutdown application.

2. Open Keychain Access application (part of OSX and MacOS).

3. Select the "All items" category in the lower left corner of the screen.

4. Find the NordVPN entry and entries with com.nordvpn....-apple.HockeySDK.

5. Right-click and delete them from the keychain.

6. Close Keychain Access and restart the NordVPN application. You will be prompted to log in again. After re-entering credentials and selecting to connect - a Neagent window would prompt. It requires entering Mac user password. Make sure to select Always allow button. It would re-write the credentials, stored in the Keychain.



2. They told me uninstall NordVPN IKE and install OpenVPN

“try to install this version of our app to see if the issue would persists:

It didn’t work.



3. They told me that Try our downgraded version, here's a link for that: https://downloads.nordcdn.com/apps/macos/generic/NordVPN-OpenVPN/3.4.0/NordVPN.pkg

Before that, uninstall the previous version, reboot device and try install it.


it WORKED!


Now i don’t have pop up issue and NordVPN works.

Hi Grant, thanks for your follow-up.


In fact the problem of the pop-up did occur in Safe mode – one of the first things I tried. Then yesterday I got an email from the VPN provider – VPN Unlimited – after a couple of days' delay, that gave me a password. That solved all the problems, including Mail (sort of), App Store, iTunes and Apple TV. It's still a pig since I have to re-enter it every time my Mac sleeps. I think VPN Unlimited was modifying some security stuff under the hood, but I doubt they'll admit to that.


I wish I could understand why all this happened: any ideas?


Mail is giving me a headache with sending, and I don't know if the pop-up problem is still associated with this. I'll log a different chat on that, but check the Community first. Meanwhile Spark – which wasn't working properly before is now just fine (might be because of running TechTool Pro.


Is that really the case with Apple and malware? You mention 'Ant-Virus' [sic, in your subject line], but not trojans, worms and other malware. Others (e.g., MacWorld) do say that Apple is a target these days. I've never had a problem, but I'm very cautious (I'd die without my Apple gear!).

I have also just experienced this issue for the first time. Have been using two different VPNs over the last 18 months with no issue, finally settling on one very reliable VPN over the last year - then suddenly this 'impassable' pop-up window, highly frustrating. I have emailed their very good tech support for some suggestions, let's see what they come up with. I would just add however that all the connection issues (which are normally that the VPN won't work straight away, until we've disconnected and reconnected) relate just to one particular family member's log in (not mine), which she only uses to play a game called Roblox. Anyone else had connection issues after/during playing this or a similar game ?
