Now that I think of it, back when I still had my 2009 MacBook Pro 15", I never installed Boot Camp by simply having an Windows ISO on the internal drive: It was always via DVD or USB. How does Boot Camp install Windows to the drive when the ISO is still on the drive? Is that what the 8GB OSXRESERVED partition is for? Storing the Win10 installer ISO? And is that why BCA keeps failing? When it tries to copy over the installation files to the dedicated partition?

What happens to the partition after installation, does it get merged into the Win10 partition or back into the MacHD partition?

I ordered a USB drive from Amazon it's on the way, but I likely won't make anymore progress for another 2 days.

Most Macs with built-in Optical (CD/DVD) drives require them to be used for Windows installation. 2012-2014 models can use either an ISO (or DVD) and USB2 to install Windows. 2015 and later models use OSXRESERVED as a replacement for the USB2 drive.

BCA has other challenges. For example copying a file larger than 2GB to the OSXRESERVED partition has issues in High Sierra. Some users have installed Sierra on an external disk to work around this issue.

It is deleted and merged with the Mac partition. This process is also buggy.

Post back when you are ready. If you want to try the Sierra external boot method. If you use the Sierra method, disconnect all external storage once the Windows installer starts, before you choose the partition. On 2017 and later models, the process is automated, so as soon as the Mac shuts down, remove the Sierra disk.

So there have been new developments:

I've obtained a Windows 10 Pro ISO (don't ask me how, but I did). Tried it out of sheer boredom and it worked! (Was able to boot into Win10 installer, install within 15 minutes, install drivers, etc. Didn't try all the features but Touchbar was functional and so was Audio.)

Nonetheless, I am not immediately in need of Boot Camp so I'm going to wait for the thumb drive to arrive and try it. My best guess is to do with the Win10 version. The Pro ISO I obtained is v1709 and not 1711. That could be the difference although I am not sure why that would be the case. Perhaps Boot Camp doesn't recognize the Education version and bogs down for some reason.

Not going to mark this solved because the issue wasn't really resolved. But if anyone else has this problem:

Try v1709 instead of 1711, Windows 10 Pro instead of Windows 10 Education.
