Sound drops out halfway through clip

I'm trying to edit a 60 minute video in iMovie. The sound drops out halfway through. It plays fine in QuickTime, with sound throughout, so I know the source file (mp4) is fine. I've tried quitting and re-importing the file but the sound drops out at the exact same spot.

What can I do to fix this? I'm just trying to make a few simple edits (cut the beginning and end to clean up the clip) but it's not turning out to be so simple!

What is the format of the audio as you see it in Quicktime player inspector. iMovie likes MP4 video with AAC audio. You might try running the clip through HandBrake which is a free download. By default it will encode to MP4 with AAC audio. This has worked for others with a similar problem.
