Mac constantly asking for Facebook password

After changing my Facebook password, I keep getting a notification from the system (NOT the browser) "Facebook Password Required: Enter your password in Internet Accounts." In System Preferences -> Internet Accounts, clicking on Facebook gives me the message "Can't connect to the account Facebook. Enter the password for user [MY NAME]" When I put the password in, it says "Unable to verify account name or password."

The password is correct. I can log in to facebook just fine through the browser or on my phone, but after I changed the password in the browser, it broke the integration with mac apps through the system (for instance, I cannot post a photo to facebook from the photos app anymore). I've tried deleting the facebook account entirely from System Preferences and making a new one, but the same problem occurs.

I'm on a Macbook Air running the current version of High Sierra.

Yeah this just started happening to me on the 24th or 25th. I hadn't changed my password, but I went ahead and did that and it didn't fix the problem. I also tried deleting and re-adding the account in System Preferences but the same thing happens. It looks like the password is accepted, but a little bit later it asks again. On the Facebook website under Settings/Security & Login/Where You're Logged In I see multiple separate instances of Device type unknown · Cincinnati, OH, United States with my IP address that all appear to be logged in. Forcing those to logout from that page doesn't work. So it seems it's in some sort of limbo.

Same thing here. I removed all the devices labelled unknown in FB Security and Login / 'Where you're logged in' through Facebook in a browser (Firefox, which works just fine on the mac) - there were at least 4 - all with the same IP. Also removed OS X from list of 'Authorised Logins'.

Restarted the mac, reapplied the password in Internet Accounts, it seems to instantly reject it with 'Unable to verify account name or password'. After this there is no new device listed in FB Security and Login / Where you're logged in.

I reckon FB have changed something, possibly to do with the GDPR changes recently, but that's just a guess. Off to search FB forums...

I wanted to post a photo from the Mac to FB - it's so much easier to post from Photos than from the browser as you have to export to a location then post from the file system (AFAIK).

Same problem, and I found the same odd "Device type unknown" login on my Where You're Logged log in Facebook, too. I suspect that due to the GDPR, Facebook has upgraded the security around app permissions, and Apple has yet to get their "app" (the specific access for Calendar, Contacts, etc.) upgrade to match. My guess is it will remain broken for a week or two, until the next major MacOS update, and then it will be fixed.

I'm having the same problem running Sierra.

Deleting and recreating the Facebook account in System Prefs / Internet Accounts didn't work.

Deleting all references to Facebook in Keychain Access, which includes iCloud items didn't work.

When you set up the Facebook account in internet Accounts it seems to go correctly, then you get a notification asking to re-enter the password, so you leave the Facebook account pane, re-enter it, the sheet comes down asking for the password, and it gives you the same "Unable to verify" message.

So, the system Share Sheet is now broken, but you can get the Calendar integration back:

  1. Go to Facebook in the browser, then go to "Events"
  2. Look on the right for an "Upcoming events" link.
  3. Right-click / command click (not single click) and Copy Link.
  4. Go to Calendar and File -> New Calendar Subscription.
  5. Paste the link into the url. Don't make it an iCloud calendar - since your iOS devices are probably still logged in ok and getting their calendar info direct from Facebook.

Contacts, share sheet and notifications seems to be a different story. Contacts as a Webdav account only spends a lot longer trying to authenticate, but still fails.

I want to thank everyone for posting who has done so thus far. I've been battling this for an hour or more, myself, today and was on vacation and away from home so didn't notice it til i returned this afternoon. I'm having the exact same problem and have deleted keychain remnants and even changed my FB password--which will wreak a lot of havoc as I need to log back in to several things now. Anyway, I'll keep watch on this thread for an update as none of what everyone else has done has resolved the "can't connect" issue.

Just adding my voice to the choir. Same issue here, and it has been maddening! Finally came here to look for solutions and it appears there are none at this point? Hopefully, as you, say Apple will get its hands around this and fix it with an update to come soon. Thank you all for identifying your issues so I know my machine hasn't been taken over by a bot army. 🙂

This is seriously SO annoying. If it's Apple's fault, they need to get themselves together and figure it out; if it's Facebook, I want to know WHY and WHAT to do about it. I know it's such a first world problem to have to go to the Facebook account on my internet tabs, but it's CONVENIENT having my notifications pop up on my Mac. Someone needs to figure their sh*t out.

@monkeybard don’t bother changing your password that isn’t the problem imo. i even tried creating an app specific password and that didn’t work

@zradwin i understand your frustration, dude. such a simple fix (imo but i ain’t no techie). in the meantime, just do what i did and disable your facebook internet account on mac os... you’re not missing much.
