sierra dictation

I have enhanced dictation on, but am not getting it to "italicize that" or "bold that" - it just types out those words. Same with "select all" etc.

Everything else seems to work. Why are those commands not working?

How to get dictation to type "period" instead of "." Hello! When I'm using my computer's dictation feature and I want it to type out the word "period", it always just does the punctuation of "." instead. I've searched around and I can't seem to find any way to add/change commands for dictation. Any suggestions would be great, thanks!

Where is my dictation function? Over the weekend my Mac Mini (OS 12.4) seems to have forgotten how to take dictation. Last week I dictated freely into Word (v. 16.62). Today, though neither Word nor Pages (v. 12.1) records my dictation. In Word I do not see any indication as to what the problem is. But in Pages I do not see the dictation tool in the Edit menu. I have seen that tool before. It is not there now. I did not change any settings in my computer over the weekend. What would make the dictation tool disappear from Pages?

Have you booted into Safe Mode as I mentioned previously, and tested dictation before and after a normal reboot?
