I have an iMac running Os 10.12.6 and I would like to know what the best defragment and diagnostic software I should use? I have used tech tool pro in the past.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.3)

Where did you learn this? The only time defragmentation might be beneficial is on external HDs that are used for video editing. Defragging would make the loading and editing of videos more efficient.

Other than that all you need to know is to maintain a minimum of 15-20 GB of free space on the boot drive for temp swap and cache files. To paraphrase babowa, "we ain't in Windows land any more" - or something equally corny.

Some points:

  1. DiskWarrior 5.1 still cannot rebuild an APFS drive catalog in High Sierra.
  2. The operating system will automatically, and continuously defrag the boot drive - unlike Windows, but not the contents of the Disk catalog file that contains pointers to every file/folder on the system.
    1. One either periodically boots the Mac in Safe Boot mode to rebuild select System databases and caches, or when a future DiskWarrior release finally supports APFS filesystems, then it can be used to defrag the Drive catalog file. It currently only supports HFS+ Journaled filesystems.
    2. Even for recent macOS releases with HFS+ journaled filesystems, I am finding almost no need for DiskWarrior to rebuild the disk catalog as notable fragmentation just is not occuring as much as it did a few years ago.
  3. The macOS operating system uses a modern memory management system that takes care of itself, and there is no need for any third party tool to override an already efficient process.

I asked because all my computers have been Macs back when Norton was the utility disk for problems etc. and they had a visual representation of the disk defragmenting the drive. Tech tool also had a similar representation for the same task so I thought the same would be true for my new computer. With 3 TB of space I am not worried about filling up the drive but I wanted all the programmes to be together in one piece so to speak.
