Impossible to Add or Remove iPhone's Ringtone via iTunes

Hello,

I'd like to follow up on the thread I started some time ago:

Can’t Delete Ringtone from iPhone 8 (iTunes 12.7)

We've since then updated the iOS to 11.4, the iTunes's version is 12.7.5.9. My issue described in the previous thread persists — I'm still unable to remove a ringtone from my iPhone using iTunes. However, I've found out that I cannot add any new ringtones using the same method, either. The ringtones just won't sync.

I've got the “Manually manage music and videos” option enabled. I tried to disable and re-enable it before, and it didn't make any difference.

In the Tones section, the ringtones are greyed out. Those in the screenshot aren't even on my iPhone anymore (I removed them using the iFunBox), but they still appear in this list nonetheless. When I add any new tones, they also appear greyed out like this, and after hitting the Sync button, they never appear in the phone. Next time I enter the Tones under “On My Device”, the ringtone list looks exactly like this again.

I've tested it with another iPhone, and it does exactly the same thing here. This is why I haven't reset the phone to the factory settings; it doesn't look like it would do the job (plus, it's a rather lengthy and bothersome procedure, so if it is a solution, I'd like to have some reassurance that it really helps).

Using the conventional methods available in the GUI, I didn't manage to figure it out. I'd like to ask whether someone came across this before and found a feasible solution — meaning, made it work in iTunes again, not through third-party solutions.

Thanks in advance.

I did. And this is just a part of the whole “can’t add or remove ringtones in iTunes” problem. Removing them via iFunBox is a feasible workaround, but it doesn’t change anything about the fact that iTunes has dropped support for the custom ringtone management entirely. And unless there’s some massive public outcry that would make Apple change their mind, I suppose we’re gonna have to accept that, or look for alternatives that would cover both removing and adding ringtones — like GarageBand.

Goodness… it was really broken on my side in the end. I tested it with my secondary iPhone. Sadly, I had to restore it into the factory settings and set it up as a new phone. After this, it started to work via iTunes again. I'm glad I've found a solution to this, but at the same time, it kind of *****… I've got too much stuff set up on my primary iPhone which I'm not ready to set up all over again just because of this… so I guess I'm gonna have to pass on this, or wait for the iOS 12 to come up and then maybe play with it a little.

As for removing the tones exported by GarageBand, you just select a tone, hit Share and choose the option to export it as a ringtone. You'll get to the screen shown in the below animation — there's an option called "Your Ringtones" — select this to open the list of ringtones, then delete it with the regular swipe-left gesture (or via the Edit button in the corner).

Once you've reset the device by removing any legacy ringtones from before this change which didn't migrate properly then you should be able to drag & drop ringtones from Finder or Windows Explorer to the device as described in the Move custom ringtones from iTunes to your iOS device section of Use tones and ringtones with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support. It works here. GarageBand for iOS should work on a device for creating new tones, but it won't help you remove any already there.

We’re going around in circles here. As I said, I don’t have any custom ringtones in either of my iPhones as of now, and yet I can’t add any new ones, not even by dragging m4r files from Finder and dropping them to Tones under the target iPhone in the left menu of iTunes. I’ve even made an internet research to make sure this is no longer an option in iTunes.

The GarageBand’s GUI allows removing ringtones you added before using it, which now makes it the only feasible option for adding it, bypassing iTunes or any other external software entirely.

OK, and now it's started to work on my primary iPhone, as well… all of a sudden, I didn't need to do anything. Maybe you brought some good aura into this, Mr tt2, I have no idea. I'm slowly getting used to Apple toys playing up a bit lately.

Anyway, thank you for your attempts to help me. Hope I've helped you with that GarageBand… otherwise, feel free to ask on.

Take care!

Thanks; I'm fully familiar with this procedure… and as I said, it doesn't work anymore. With either of my iPhones, the result is the same — the tones never appear in the phone transferred like that; using iTunes, they can be neither added nor removed.

As of now, the only option left, apart from buying the overpriced ringtones in the iTunes Store, is using iPhone's GarageBand — import whichever piece of music one fancies and export that as a ringtone.
