Apple Mail not jiving with the server

I'm using Apple mail v11.2 on my mac mini (running High Sierra v10.13.3) to manage my gmail accounts. Whenever I read or delete emails in apple mail on the mac mini, it does not affect the emails on the gmail server. In other words, when I open mail on my iphone, all those email messages are either unread or not deleted. Often times, they will show back up on my mac mini! It sends/receives email just fine, but this gets frustrating- especially after deleting dozens of emails. By the way, the same does not occur with my iphone or ipad. Please help, b/c it's making me bananas.

Make sure your server settings are correct in Mail.

From the gmail site:

Use IMAP to check Gmail on other email clients

Set up IMAP and change your SMTP settings to read Gmail messages in other mail clients, like Microsoft Outlook and Apple Mail. When you use IMAP, you can read your Gmail messages on multiple devices, and messages are synced in real time. You can also read Gmail messages using POP.

Note: To avoid temporarily locking yourself out of your account, make sure you don't exceed 2500 MB per day for IMAP downloads and 500 MB per day for IMAP uploads. If you're setting up a single IMAP account on multiple computers, try taking a break between each setup.

Set up IMAP

Step 1: Check that IMAP is turned on

On your computer, open Gmail.
In the top right, click Settings .
Click Settings.
Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
In the "IMAP Access" section, select Enable IMAP.
Click Save Changes.

Step 2: Change SMTP & other settings in your email client

Use the table below to update your client with the correct information. For help updating your settings, search your email client's Help Center for instructions on setting up IMAP.

Thanks Bob!

I went into my settings, and I am pretty sure IMAP is set up. It is definitely enabled in gmail. On my desktop, when I go to Mail...Preferences...Accounts, it has "IMAP" under the gmail account. I never really had an option to choose that. When I delete the account and then add it back, it just asks for a username and password and sets it up automatically. And for the life of me, I can't figure out where/how to change that at all. I definitely think the problem is with my computer's settings (obviously, since I don't have this problem on my other devices), but can't figure out the solution.

Make sure your gmail accounts are configured as IMAP accounts on gmail and on all the devices accessing the accounts.
