High Sierra 10.13.6 would not install

As the title says, the latest update would not install on my 2017 highest-possible-end iMac. I recently had to do a Time Machine re-install of the whole thing (took over 40 hours); maybe this is somehow the reason?

It got caught in a loop where it'd try to update, tell me it couldn't, and if you just restarted it would try again. Quitting the installation program and choosing a start drive started the computer fine, but the update has obviously still not been applied.

Open Disk Utility from your Applications/ Utilities folder, run First Aid. If it checks out ok open System Preferences> Users & Groups> Login Items, if there are any third party apps set to start at login highlight them and click on the minus button to remove them.

Download this, Download macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 Combo Update

Once downloaded double-click to install.

See if that completes.

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities, Naiera.
If I understand your post correctly, you're trying to update macOS and it seems to be in a loop where the update never completes. Keeping your system up-to-date is important. I'd like to help.
As always, it's a good idea to create a current backup before updating: How to use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac
Have you tried to begin the update from safe mode? Here's how to enter safe mode:
Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac
Let us know if that resolves this issue for you.
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Take care.

It worked! Thank you. I don't know if it was the auto-start programs (just SteerMouse, Dropbox and iTunesHelper) that were the problem; they've never seemed to get in the way before. The harddrive was working fine, of course. I check it regularly 😉

I've never seen that manually downloaded Combo Update recommended before; I figure that's what did it for me and it seems like something everyone should know about 😝 😉

Now the OS can finally stop pestering my about updating! 😀
