Trapped in "Press home to upgrade", please rescue my data.

My iPhone 6 is trapped in an endless loop of the step "press home to upgrade" after updating from iOS8.4 to iOS11.4.

When I do as it says, it will show an Apple logo and progress bar. the progress bar can only walk nearly 80% (60% for the 2nd time, just a few pixels for 3rd the later times) and soon it restarts. Finally it shows "press home to upgrade" again.

Force restart will not help.

Upgrading again under recovery mode by iTunes will not help.

iPhone 6, iOS 11.4, upgraded from 8.4 to 11.4

Hi Asher,

As I mentioned in my first post: "Upgrading again under recovery mode by iTunes will not help."

Which means:

I have used iTunes to "upgrade" for many times, and it will succeed as long as it's not stuck at "Verifying".

And after upgrading, the endless loop still occurs.

This is weird.

And one thing I forgot to tell you is:

Before first time upgrading, it is iOS 8.4 without jailbreak. I used up Its storage and the phone becomes hot, extremely slow and can't be charged. In this situation, I shut it down. When I try to switch it on again, it is stuck at apple logo. Then about 45 secs later, blue screen shows for 1 sec and it restarts. Again it is stuck at apple logo then blue screen and restarts...

In this case, I use iTunes to upgrade it to iOS 11.4 and finally it is trapped in that endless loop.

Hi Asher, you are so kind, thank you, really.

Yes, the Chinese on the screen means "iPhone is stopped to use / Connect to iTunes"

But under that screen when I connect the phone to my PC with iTunes running, it just vibrates for 3 times, then nothing happened.

I tried to "upgrade" it under recovery mode, it can be done successfully, but finally I got that screen again.

What I deduce is, the data on my phone is erased partly or fully(hope it is partly) since the name of my phone and lockscreen password are gone. And I know that once restored, there is no way to retrieve my data since apple is good at data security.

It is possible for a hard disk to recover data back after deleting or quick formating. But it is nearly impossible for an apple device to do that.

It is extremely rediculous that, one person is impossible to get his/her data back from an apple device.

After all those, I will not use that phone or any other apple device again.

Hello Johnsonshen

Thank you for trying everything that you possibly could,

From what I can see is that if you are not able to go beyond that point a hardware failure has occurred.

Since you get Blue Screen of Death (B.S.O.D.) that indicates that there is something wrong with the hardware.

If it's still is in AppleCare+ warrenty then you can see if they can take it in for service (they open up the device and do diagnostics and replace certain components if possible)

Otherwise you will have to pay a lot which depends from country to country what are the charges.

I can understand how you feel about Apple now and I get that you are very upset.

I too faced a huge issue with Apple in India and for a brand new iPhone X which was defective (Under Warrenty) after months I got a replacement.

But yes if you need any more assistance please feel free to contact Official Apple Support

Or come back here to Apple Support Communities.

TIP: In future please do a Backup via iCloud or iTunes or both preferably! In that case you will never worry if something serious happens to your iOS device

Hi sohail138,

Thank you for your hopeful words! Wish it is just as you said.

As I mentioned, when I tried to "upgrade" by iTunes, iTunes changed it to "restore"(I clicked "upgrade")

I stoped it once I saw the word "restore". But it seemed too late.

This happens under the situation that, the "update" is always stuck at "Verifying". So I completely uninstalled iTunes and deleted ipsw file. Then I reinstalled it and left my phone connected under recovery mode while downloading ipsw. After it finished downloading, I clicked "upgrade", but finally I saw "restoring" instead of "upgrading".

The situation is that, when I try to upgrade, the process is always stuck at "Verifying". So I completely uninstalled iTunes and deleted ipsw file. After it finished downloading, it asked me and I clicked "upgrade", but finally I saw "restoring" instead of "upgrading".

I don't know why.

It's hard to believe but, I am counting on the future technology which can time travel back to the past.

(I don't have iCloud or iTunes backup)

The take home lesson of this entire thread is right there.

If all the OP had done was bother to make backups of their data, and keep them up to date, everything else in this entire thread would be moot.

If people would just learn to make backups and keep them current, these forums would have half or less of their daily post count. There is no reason why data loss should ever be a concern with anyone’s computing devices - iPhone, iPad, Mac, whatever - if the data matters to you, back it up. That has always been true, and it will always be true with any electronic data storage device.

Trapped in "Press home to upgrade", please rescue my data.
