My iPad touch screen becomes intermittently unresponsive (might not respond to touch briefly, maybe 1 to ten times a minute). Not sure if it is the touch screen or processor overload.

I have a 12.9 inch iPad Pro 256 GB with cell & WiFi purchased from Verizon. I am running 11.4.1. My iPad screen began being intermittentlay unresponsive several months ago (actually, if I remember correctly, this started after I upgraded to 11.2).

For instance, I may be trying to scroll down a long page, and for the first several finger strokes, it works normally, and then the next several finger strokes do nothing and the page slows down and stops scrolling. Another example: I’ll be typing, and all of a sudden, several letters don’t respond... instead of the letter on the keyboard turning grey as it is struck, it stays white and those letters don’t appear on the ‘page’. Another example: if I use a keyboard that allows gesture writing, a swipe from one key to another will all of a sudden not be a solid curve, but instead, a dotted line curve, like a rapid series of on/off in response to my finger crossing the screen.

The problem seems to be most extreme when I try to play SimCity or Tumblr, but occurs in every app. However, the Apple apps seem to be the least affected.

i have used a touch screen app to test if there are any areas of the screen that don’t respond to touch; that seems to be fine. I have done a factory reset and reload from an archival backup; the problem is the same. I tried upgrading to the 12.1 public beta; the problem persisted. I tried factory reset and just loading 11.4 without restoring my data... at first, the problem disappeared, but then slowly reoccurred without loading any apps or any data.

I took it to an Apple store on campus at the Harrisburg Area Community College while I was traveling... they ran a set of diagnostics and couldn’t find anything wrong.

This problem is slowly driving me nuts... it’s very frustrating to try to use a device when the input keeps failing sporadically. Any help would be very much appreciated.

You may want to read this over on what the free, one-year ApoleCare support entails, legally.

Should not take you too long to peruse this.

https://www.apple.com/legal/sales-support/applecare/docs/techsupporten.html

You need to remember, up untl you started performing new software upgrades/updates, you purchased a fully working iPad with no hardware or operational defects.

The iPad now has been modified with new software.

So, the device is no longer in its original operational state, any longer.

So, that is why free one-year AppleCare is a limited warranty.

It is mostly a hardware defect warranty AND does NOT cover software.

Even extended AppleCare+ DOES NOT cover software defects like bugs or glitches.

I really doubt Apple is going to issue you a new or refurbished iPad for software issues.

I ony mentioned the extended AppleCare+ replacement product clause as a last ditch customer effort/request, since the replacement product part of extended, two-year AppleCare+ exists and maybe an Apple Store could grant exceptions/waivers to simply just hardware damage and allow a replacement product due to mounting software issues and to allow the customer to pay the $49 fee U.S.D. for a voluntary request for a replacement iPad.

That is really NOT going to happen.

Especially under normal, limited warranty coverage that one-year AppleCare covers.

But...Apple employees are trained to deal with customer product issues on a case by case basis, so you never know.

Good Luck to You!

Sorry to learn this.

Get this back to Apple.

If they give you another replacement iPad, kindly ask if they are giving you refurbished iPad Pro models or not and if they are, kindly ask them, that given your continuing iPad Pro issues, if they could give you a non-refurbished, brand new iPad Pro model, instead.

Also, if you need this, here is Apple, Cupertino CA. phone support info here.

I wish you Good Luck!

This appears to be a growing problem with some 2nd gen 12.9 and 10.5 inch screen iPad Pro models.

If this is bad enough for you, if you purchased extended, two-year AppleCare+, you have the option to ask Apple for one $49 U.S.D. iPad refurbished replacement per year for any accidental/incidental damage or defects ( one-incident per year ).

This option is ONLY available to you IF you purchased extended, two-year AppleCare+.

Good Luck to You!

Hi Michael!

Thanks for your reply. I was not aware that others were having this difficulty... try as I might, I could not find other examples of similar incidents here or elsewhere.

i have a question... my device was purchased at the end of October of last year... ie, 9 months ago... so it is still under the original warranty, which protects against manufacturing defects, etc. Since the tablet is in otherwise pristine condition (no scratches or dents, glass is undamaged, etc.), wouldn’t it be replaceable under that warranty? I did not purchase Apple care.

Thanks!

Your iPad is still covered under the free, one-year limited AppleCare warrany, but the warranty, I believe only covers physical product manufacture hardware defects and not issues caused by iOS software upgrades/updates.

You could take it to your “local” Apple Store and see what they may or may not do for you.

Good Luck to You!

Hi, there are quite a few threads on here about this issue, one has over 700 people saying they have the same problem but I sometimes have issues finding things too with so many threads being created each day. Search terms like iPad Pro and screen should help you find some If you want to read other peoples experiences.

I have this issue with my 12.9 pro and I’m just about to get it replaced to see if that fixes it. Mine passed all hardware tests but the issue is maddeningly ever present! There doesn’t seem to be any fix for this problem yet other than replacement so the best you can do is keep politely ringing Apple and see what they can do for you.

Unfortunately you can only get AppleCare+ upto 60 days after you purchased the iPad so you are well past the limit.

Good luck with it.

Thanks for your respons, kissaragi.

I had tried searching for this issue, and although I did find a number of people’s issues with the iPad’s touchscreen, I hadn’t found anything that seemed to be the same as mine. Perhaps I was being too specific in my search.

But I will go back and search again, as I would love to hear how other people, or Apple, resolved the issue.

Wow, what a catch 22.

The warranty only covers hardware defects, but doesn’t cover their own software not working with their own hardware? Since you cannot use their hardware without their operating system, that hardly seems legal.

I will make an appointment at an Apple store to have this looked at again, and will update this thread with what I find out.

Thanks!

I have now had 4 iPad Pro 256GB Wi-Fi Only (2nd Generation) models. My original had a screen that popped out, and became unresponsive to touch at times. Apple replaced it, no questions asked. My second had the same issue, and so did the third. I am now on my 4th.

This model has been working well for a few months, but now suffers from the exact same issues you have mentioned. I too tried upgrading to the iOS 12 Beta, but found no success. I am slowly loosing my patience with thsee devices. Now I have no warranty left, Apple offers no support. My only hope is that Apple recognises this growing issue and offers some replacement service in the future, or full refund scheme.

Terribly disappointed, dissatisfied and upset. I expect more from a $1TN dollar company.

I can understand your frustration...I am on my SECOND one and it started doing the same.It starts with some touch loses and in about two or three months it is worse. They always tell me (at one of their official services) that maybe it is some of the apps causing it 😁😁😁.Yes on a thousand euro device with apps that are used by hundreds of thousands it is the obvious answer LOL.I dont know if they are even trying to see what is causing it or solve it. There are a few videos about it on YouTube. Probably the worst 1000 euros I paid...APPLE I AM DONE WITH YOU.

For those having this iPad Pro touch issue, is this affectig both 2nd gen iPad Pro screen sizes?

Since the Pro models of iPad are THE most expensive of iPads, I'd be P'O’ed too if a had spent my over $1000 U.S.D. on my 1st gej iPad Pro only for it to have some major hardware issues only a short time into the operational life of the device.

Totally agree and understand.

At nikosdio,

Have you ever tried backing up your iPad and then do an Erase All contents and settings to see if your iPad Pro returns to normal, anticipated operation?

Sep 30, 2018 1:56 PM in response to MichelPM

Yes my friend. I did everything on my first device. Clean install, all the updates, restore as new etc. Nothing worked. It did the same thing from the first 10 minutes of use. I got touch loses on almost every app, on virtual keyboard, scrolling through the apps, 3-9 seconds of screen freezing. Never had an issue when using the pencil though. Now I want to get in touch with them again and see what is to be done, although I am not very positive about the outcome. I think they don't intend to deal with it. And of course when the warranty is over you are "married" to an expensive device that is nothing more than a headache

Sep 30, 2018 2:18 PM in response to nikosdio

Does this affect both 2nd gen iPad Pro screen sizes?

Real bummer.

Totally unacceptable for such an expensive Apple device.

I feel for you.

I was going to suggest if Apple gives you another replacement 10.5 inch screen iPad Pro, sell it right away on eBay and use the monetary proceeds to graduate up to the larger 2nd gen 12.9 inch screen iPad Pro model, if those do not have/exhibit the same touch issue.

My iPad touch screen becomes intermittently unresponsive (might not respond to touch briefly, maybe 1 to ten times a minute). Not sure if it is the touch screen or processor overload.
