My iMac 21.5", Late 2009, is running slowly and am getting the beachball. Processor 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory 4 GB 1067

My iMac 21.5", Late 2009 is running in macOS High Sierra V10.13.5, Processor 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory 4 GB 1067 , MHz DDR3. When the beachball starts spinning I have to just shut it down and re-boot.

I first tried to reboot several times in SafeMode but it wouldn't open in SafeMode. Then ran EtreCheck and the report is as follows. Is it worth it at this point to configure Time Machine and upgrade my RAM?

Any other suggestions? Thank you for your time.

krispinteriors,

You have been keeping your version of Mac OS up-to-date, however you have not been keeping your hardware up-to-date to match the system requirements. Your machine would likely benefit by upgrading the RAM to 8GB or more. If you choose to do this, please only use Crucial.com or macsales.com RAM as iMacs are very sensitive to using quality RAM and both vendors will supply this to you.

However that being said, I see some red flags! First is there does not appear to be any backup for the computer. This will result in lost data when your HD crashes. At 9 years old if the HD is the original it is working on borrowed time and could fail at any time. At a bare minimum you should have a Time Machine backup which ONLY requires a dedicated external HD. If you are not familiar with TM please read How to use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support and take care of this problem ASAP.

Any USB EHD drive will work. The G Drives are okay but very expensive for what you get. What most experienced users on these forums use is OWC Mercury Elite Pro series due to their overall reliability and pricing. You can find these at OWC Mercury Elite Pro: Production-Grade External Hard Drive

As a general rule of thumb get one that is 2-3 the capacity of the amount of storage your computer has. After receiving it then format it using Disk Utility. There are many YouTube videos that explain how to do this including How to Format An External Hard Drive for Mac - YouTube
