recover/open domain site file

until the other day, I normally used iWeb even if it's not longer supported, then, I decided to wipe my Mac.

now I have recovered iWeb app via Time Machine with its domain file (my web site), so I can open the app but the website is gone, it has several Mb of weight so something is in there but when i click on it, in iWeb I have the select layout page.

my question, is there a way to continue to open my website with iWeb (and how to do it) or is there a program that can open this file so I don't have to start from zero...it would be a disaster..and impossible!!

thanks

Put the domain file in your User/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder.

User uploaded file

Then launch iWeb and see if it can find and open your websites.

If that fails download and run iWeb Switch Domain from Old Toads Cellar. This will help link iWeb to the domain file. To open the app the first time Control (right) - click on it and select Open from the contextual menu.

I have 5.93GB of free space.

That is entirely too little free space. One should strive to maintain a minimum of 15-20 GB of free space for optimal system and application performance. With such little free space new files can be severely fragmented when saving and that also reduces performance and reliability.

Make sure your domain file is located in the User/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder.

How much free space do you have on your boot drive?

Boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, and try using iWeb from there. Can you? Reboot normally and try again.

How did you go about cleaning out caches and cookies? What happens when you try to launch iWeb?

Hi Old Toad,

Please can you help me? I am unable to open my iWeb on my mac air!

It was working perfectly yesterday, then all of a sudden my changes would not save - not space left on my mac (email app taking up too much space). Apple 'helped' resolve storage issue, and it seemed I was able to save the new updates to iWeb before restarting and other processes such as deleting cashes and cookies. However, once I turned my mac back on and opened iWeb (this morning) lots of the content of my website was not there - the pages looked blank!

Heartbroken of this discovery I tried to start to replicate one of the pages that seemed to vanish. I saved my nominal changes and then hours later reopened iWeb to check my updates had saved but then struggled to open iWeb at all!!! I have 'restarted' and 'shutdown' and then turn back on several times and each time it seems iWeb is not responding. The last attempt iWeb didn't even say 'opening'. - It previously said 'opening' but never opened.

I have iWeb version 3.0.4 and am running OS X El Capitan version 10.11.6

As I say all was working fine yesterday, but in the space of 24hrs I now can't open iWeb at all!

PLEASE CAN YOU HELP ME to open my iWeb, get it working again, so I can access my two websites that desperately need to be updated please.

Hi OT,

Thank you for getting back to me.

In answer to your questions:

- I have 5.93GB of free space.

- In ‘Safe Mode’: iWeb icon on the dock bounces. ‘Opening’ progress bar is displayed but the window containing websites does not appear at all. If I select, iWeb I can view the display windows of ‘Format’, ‘Arrange’, ‘View’, ‘Window’, ‘Help’.

In ‘file’ however, the options are mainly grayed out apart from, ’page setup’, ‘close’ and ’google Adsenes’ which I view ‘find’, ‘spelling’ and, ‘emojis and symbols’.

- In ‘normal mode’: same as above, when attempting to launch iWeb, a progress bar stating ‘opening’ displays but no window for iWeb opens. The other windows of text, colour, layout etc open when selected.

- Re. cookies and cashes: I ‘selected all’ and deleted. Then restarted computer. Recovery files are currently present in trash. Prior to this whole situation I would regularly have ‘recovery files’ in the trash.

Etrecheck Report states:

Major issues: ‘Time machine not found’ and ‘low disk space’,

Minor issues: ‘battery may be losing capacity’, ‘numerous cases of apps with heavy CPU usage’, ‘the machine has 32-bits app that may have problems in the future’. 32-Applications include HP printer, DVD player, Adobe Flash, iWeb.

90% of storage is used.

Battery health normal 84% used.

Virtual Memory Free RAM 61MB.

Cached files: 685MB.

Best wishes and thanks.

Hi OT,

Do you think I should remove my email, and access them directly via the providers website rather than the mail app?

Do you know why iWeb initially appears to be 'opening' but the window that would display websites never appears?

Do you think deleting 'cashes' has caused this problem?

Is there a way to access the 'last 12hour built in memory' or is this what the 'cashes' do?

I really hope to hear from you.

Best wishes.

As for the email, that would be your call. Personally I won't run my iMac without a minimum of 25GB of free space. I usually keep around 50-60GB free so if I ever try to create a large slideshow, movie, etc. I will have no issues with storage There are very small (about the size of a Magic Mouse) buss powered external HDs that can be used to store the overflow from your internal HD.

Old Toad

this does not help. iWeb has worked for me since 2009. (version 3.0.4) I am using an iMac running High Sierra 10.13.6 and have 937.26GB free space. I use iWeb for two web sites. One of these web sites had a new page added 9 June 2018, and everything was working fine.
Your App (downloaded from Toads Cellar does not open either of these web sites.

I have 2 questions:

1 Is there ANYTHING ELSE I can do to open my sites in iWeb

2 Can you tell me where to look for all of the files used to create my webs? Not just the Domain.sites2

PLEASE HELP

I did open iWebSites.app.

It WORKED!!
I was almost finished updating both my sites when half the contents on the iWeb sidebar "disappeared"

Saved, closed iWeb.

Waited half an hour or so, but now, every time I load the iWebSites.app and select the site to open, I web opens as previously, just shows the file menu greyed out and you can do nothing.
Am I missing something here?

The files used to create the website by iWeb are only in the domain file except for images you've brought in.

If Wyodor's method fails you it might be time (it probably is anyway) to move to a supported web building application that is supported by its developers and is up to date with the latest HTML features. One that many users have gone to is EverWeb because of it's iWeb like user interface and drag and drop capability. It has a demo version you can use to see if it will work for you.
