iPad Pro stuck in 11.4.1 update purgatory

I began the update to my iPad Pro when the update came up through the 11.4.1 software update in Settings on the iPad Pro. The update bar gets to about 3/4 of the way then slows down, to almost to the very end (about 1/16" left on the update bar), but never completes the update. I have left it alone for a full 24hrs and it never finishes. I plugged it into my iMac and there is no option to update. When I try to restore, I get a message saying that I need to turn off 'Find My iPad' on the iPad. Obviously, this is not possible.

When I press the Start and Home buttons to reset, the Apple start up screen comes up, then I get a message to 'press the Home button to complete the update'. When I do this, same thing happens with the update bar as described above.

I can't turn off the iPad. It keeps restarting instead of turning off.

I can't get the iPad to safety mode.

Right now, the iPad is bricked.

Hi Digitx,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. I understand that you're having trouble completing the iOS 11.4.1 update on your iPad, and that the progress bar never completes. I also see that you've attempted to update using iTunes, but you're running into some trouble there as well. I know it's important to be able to use your iPad and keep it up-to-date; I'd like to help. You're definitely on the right track with using iTunes, you'll want to use the steps below to place your iPad in recovery mode so iTunes can update without you turning off Find My iPhone. Be sure to pay close attention to step four and choose to "Update" in order to prevent data loss:

Put your device in recovery mode and set it up again

  1. Make sure that you're using the latest version of iTunes.
  2. If iTunes is already open, close it. Connect your device to your computer and open iTunes. If you don't have a computer, borrow one from a friend or go to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for help.
  3. While your device is connected, force restart it with these steps, but don't release the buttons when you see the Apple logo, wait until the connect to iTunes screen appears:
    • On an iPhone X, iPhone 8, or iPhone 8 Plus: Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Then, press and hold the Side button until you see the connect to iTunes screen.
    • On an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold the Side and Volume Down buttons at the same time. Keep holding them until you see connect to iTunes screen.
    • On an iPhone 6s and earlier, iPad, or iPod touch: Press and hold both the Home and the Top (or Side) buttons at the same time. Keep holding them until you see the connect to iTunes screen.

  4. When you see the option to Restore or Update, choose Update. iTunes will try to reinstall iOS without erasing your data. Wait while iTunes downloads the software for your device. If the download takes more than 15 minutes and your device exits the connect to iTunes screen, let the download finish, then repeat step 3.

  5. After the Update or Restore completes, set up your device.
