Disk space problems finder versus df -k disk full

I have not been able to use VMWare Fusion because it keeps telling me I don't have enough disk space on my Mac. Finder shows me as having 129 GB of my 1 TB disk available. When I do a df -k in Terminal I get this:

Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Available Capacity iused ifree %iused Mounted on

/dev/disk1s1 976900220 971333920 3753472 100% 1934160 9223372036852841647 0% /

It appears I have been deleting files, and Finder thinks they are gone, but the disk still appears to be full. Can anyone help me please?

Thanks for the confirmation. Please see my post above for some screenshots to post that might help us figure out how to resolve this problem. After you post those screenshots, use About This Mac > Storage > Manage to try to recovery some space.

Other things you can do are:

1) Make a Time Machine backup. Your backup is out of date. Also, some of your disk space using may be due to Time Machine local snapshots. Making a backup will delete some of those snapshots and free up some space.

2) Maybe try booting in Safe Mode (Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support). This may erase some cache files and free up a bit more disk space.

That may give you enough time to figure out how to recover your disk space. If you completely run out of disk space you are going to have significant problems.

Hello JGinMiami,

This sounds very similar to what was discussed in this thread: failure of High Sierra and Apple

I never got a confirmation from that thread. Could you run an EtreCheck report and post it here? Download EtreCheck from https://www.etrecheck.com, run it, and paste the results here. EtreCheck is perfectly safe to run, does not ask for your password to install, and is signed with my Apple Developer ID.

I have seen a number of other threads that report mysterious storage problems. I first noticed it here in this thread: System storage is REALLY big. Could you post some screenshots from About This Mac > Storage and About This Mac > Storage > Manage? After posting the screenshots, maybe try some of those "Manage" options.

In this thread, someone reported being able to manually trigger the automatic clean up system: Mac Pro memory issue

Unfortunately, that's all the information I can provide right now. Sometimes when these new issues arise, we have to work with the people who experience them to try to come up with a reliable solution. I don't think any of the solutions attempted in those other thread will work in your case. But you might be able to provide the missing piece of information.

Disclaimer: Although EtreCheck is free to download and use at first, it will eventually ask you to buy a license. There are also other links on my site that could give me some form of compensation, financial or otherwise.
