images corrupted when resizing in photos

A recurrent problem tho it doesn't happen every time. I am resizing an image using the tools in Photos and the crop tool seems to be doing what I want, that is selecting the centre of the photo and applying a square format. When I return to the main page view of the original group of photos, the one I have changed is not how it was at the end of the editing process. Instead the frame is divided into three segments. The first two are identical and show the original photo, one image above the other. The rest of the frame is solid red.

What's going on?

I am at a loss, there is clearly some corruption going on. When you "revert to original" does it go away?

Does it come back if you re-apply it?

ETA:

You might also export the edited image and open it in preview to see if it is the file or the thumbnail that is corrupted.

Which version of photos are you using?

There have been several posts showing red thumbnails after editing a photo after the macOS 10.13.6 update.

Are you editing in Full Screen Mode? Try for a change to edit without going to full screen.

I have not seen a clear solution yet, but if it is a problem with the Graphics Card, avoiding Full Screen might help.

I don't think I get the option of anything other than full screen for editing.

It is not compulsory to launch Photos in Full Screen mode.

To leave full-screen view: Choose View > Exit Full Screen

It is worth a test, because Photos may be using different features of the Graphics card if you are not in Full Screen Mode.

I'm not sure my last reply went through. Basically, I was able to revert to original and when I tried to do the same edit again, it worked. I suppose its not such a dreadful thing if you can revert to original and do it again, unless you have spent a lot of time on the edit (which in this case I hadn't)
