How do I unstack raw and jpeg in Photos?

I don't know if this is possible but I'd like to open Photos and right click on a raw file and use "edit in" to open Photoshop (which opens up Camera Raw) or Lightroom.

At the moment the jpeg is on the top so that is what opens in the editing programmes. To use a raw file I have to "export unmodified" to desktop which creates a duplicate file and then edit from there.

Is there any way to import into Photos and have the files unstacked?

I have hundreds of duplicate photos all over the place and would like them all kept in Photos after editing.

Thanks so much!

If you install the External Editors extension (for a very small fee from the App Store) you can pass the original RAW file to other applications.

External Editors is more convenient than "Edit With". It lets you select the format to pass the file. You call Editors from the Edit panel by clicking the three dots ...

For example, I used it to pass a Panasonic LUMIX RW2 file to Aurora HDR, I just had to set the Format to RW2 in the External Editors pane:

In Aurora HDR you can see, that Aurora received the RAW file alright:

When you open a RAW&JPEG pair in Photos in Edit mode, you can use the command "Image > Use RAW as original" to switch to the RAW original for editing.

I am unstacking the few RAW&JPEG pairs I am having in my library by using the command "Image > Duplicate ⌘D" create a second copy. Then I am switching the copy to the RAW file. This does not actually duplicate the original image files. It just creates a second version, so I can see the RAW and the JPEG separately as thumbnails in Photos. The RAW file will show the "R" badge and the JPEG the "J".

Hey Leonie!

It still doesn't work when I select "edit with" Photoshop or Lightroom.

In Photoshop it opens as a tiff file and not in Camera Raw.

In Lightroom it still imports as a jpeg.

It works if I want to use the limited functions in Photos edit suite.

I'm about to try just shooting raw on my camera and see if that works when there's no jpeg attached.

Thanks for your help.
