tones not syncing

Hi all:

I have spent alot of time researching and trying to find a solution to this issue and no luck at all. my tones that some I have created aed and some i purchased and had for over 12 years all of a sudden has had the dreaded dotted circle and greyed out and wont sync. I cant "uncheck" them, ive tried deleting them for itunes media library and deleted the tones folder in finder, added them back again, deleted all content on my iphone 8plus and restored it from backup minus the tones so that i can start fresh yet still have the same problem itunes will not sync them yet it shows up with that annoying dotted circle and greyed out. contacted apple and they couldnt find a solution. anyone has had this issue? thanks in advance if u can help

As noted previously iFunBox is able to delete the files in question.

Removing hidden tones

Some users have found that custom tones that are on their device don't show in iTunes so cannot be removed using iTunes alone. In such cases you could try iFunBox or a similar third party utility to make changes in the file system of the device. In iFunBox try Toolbox > User File System (Win) or Raw File System (Mac) then iTunes_Control > Ringtones to locate the relevant folder. Any custom tones on your device show up there with random 4 letter file names and a .m4r extension. Deleting all the .m4r files in this folder should clear all custom tones from the list on the device, and you can then add back what you want using iTunes. You may also need to delete the .plist file found in this folder.

N.b. making changes in the raw file system has the potential to make your device unstable. Backup before you begin and ideally Archive the backup in case there is a need to return to it.

well, i had sam problem and after many tries I did this:

- connected my iPhone to iTunes and opened one window with itunes

- in the other window opened finder with opened iTunes library file - in the tones folder I now see my ringtones (which were not visible in iTunes program tones

- selected all these files and dragged and dropped to iphone

now everything back to normal

After cleaning up the tones and the .plist file with a third party app reboot the device, then use iTunes to add new copies of your tones using the drag and drop method. If should then update the device properly so that it knows what files have been added.

If you still cannot make it work, backup the device, restore it as a new device, then restore the backup.

Should all be covered in Create and manage ringtones in iTunes. See also Manually manage content on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iTunes - Apple Support. Drag & drop from Explorer/Finder to device is the new normal, which is great until it doesn't work. When it doesn't work removing existing tones, and sometimes the .plist file used to manage them, seems to be the only way to resolve things short of a full restore.

Hi there thanks for your response ..... I have tried to delete the tones using iTunes which on appearance under the tones window the Fosgate deleted however when I unplug my iPhone and go through a contact and edit it and look through the tones the tones are still there I also tried to completely delete the contents of my iPhone however when I restore it from back up because the tones are backed up it automatically brings the tones back . Is there anyway that I can access the contents of my iPhone through finder to manually delete the tones at all because I feel like I am going around in circles ... I tried to delete the tones a number of times waltzed iTunes states that there are no tones in the phone but the true fact when you look through it they are still there . I even tried to use the first aid option on the disk utilities to see if there any issues with the library’s to fix it and even attempting that it still does the same thing. I even deleted the tones folder under the iTunes media library and re-created it and try to drag and drop the tones into the iPhone through iTunes and I still get the dotted circles,,,. It’s driving me nuts ... any further ideas ?

thanks turingtes12 for your response.....i had success with ifunbox in deleting the tones from the folder that sits under itunescontrol/ so my iphone now has the generic tones it came with.....BUT i cant transfer any of my custom tones that i have had for years into the iphone. Itunes now shows all the tones with a dotted circle when i drag them from finder into the itunes tones window. so i tried to transfer them using both iexplorer & ifunbox, they show the tones being transferred into the ringtones folder under itunes control/ and i refreshed both apps to make sure they were imported, however they still are not showing up in my iphone, so now i am stuck with generic tones even though i can see them in using iexplorer & ifunbox sitting there. I also switiching the iphone off/on did a hard reset still nothing on the iphone

all 3 programs arent transferring any of the tones, i tried a restore from back up to try to get the old tones back but it came with the generic tones.

i really dont understand why apple are making such a process so complicated! its so so so annoying, all in the name of corporate greed to force u to buy tones to line theor pockets! i am at the point of switching to android. ive never had so much trouble with an iphone ios as much as this. Any other ideas before i throw it out the window?
