Is IOS12 compatible with OS X Yosemite?

Is IOS12 compatible with an old MacBook Pro only running OS X Yosemite and iTunes12.8.0.150? Unfortunately, Apple has not come out with a new MacBook Air to which to upgrade beyond Yosemite.

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), Iphone 7Plus

After much work and effort and pain on a lot of people's part, I think I can summarize the answer:

  • Yosemite does not seem to be compatible with IOS12
  • However, in my case I was able to upgrade to El Capitan (10.11.6), despite the fact that:
  • My computer is old (late 2008)
  • there was no update path via the Apple icon and About

  • Apple Tech Support provided me with a link to upgrade to El Capitan and it works!
  • IOS12 and El Capitan are compatible.
  • However when I upgraded to IOS12, I initially could not back up the iPhone on iTunes, despite the fact I had just backed up the iPhone to iTunes a half hour before with the previous IOS.
  • there was no visible iPhone icon next to Music on Itunes
  • iTunes could not see the iphone
  • I called Apple Technical support and the rep ran me through restarting the computer in Safe Mode (shift key when restart)
  • After a very long time, the iPhone icon came up on Itunes
  • I rebooted normally and restarted iTunes and the iPhone icon was there.
  • I then successfully backed up the iPhone.

Thanks for everyone's effort. Now I don't have to immediately have to buy a new Mac (being announced at the end of October?).

Since this thread has started and nobody has been able to confirm any compatibility with Mac OS X 10.10.5, I have found a publication that discusses downgrading to iOS 11.4:

You spectacularly miss the point. Once you've upgraded to 12 you CAN'T downgrade, as your Mac running 10.10 can't see the iOS device!!

Don't upgrade your iOS until you can upgrade to Mac OS X 10.11.6

Had the update warned me I wouldn't have done so!!!!

You can take it to an Apple Authorized Service Center, or a Mac usergroup and work with someone with a newer system. Some schools in the area may have computer labs that have newer systems. I do house calls in my area, I am sure I am not alone. Some resources you may want to look at include Nextdoor, Alignable, Facebook, Thumbtack and Hubspot looking for technicians who have Apple experience.

Hi, I have a macbook (mid 2010) which I did updated from Yosemite 10.10.5 to High Sierra about 6 months ago, which was fine for a month or 2, synced to my iPhone 6 perfectly, then the Macbook crashed, wouldn't turn on etc. Took it to an Apple store, who ran it through their logistics machine, and they suggested that MacBooks this age don't work too well with anything beyond Yosemite. They downgraded it back to Yosemite for me thankfully, but just a word of warning for anyone with an older Mac, it might not be advisable to click 'install' !

Not sure about Final Cut. Please ask that question in the Final Cut forum. This discussions is strictly what is functional with iTunes 12.8 on 10.10.5 after the security update when connecting to iOS 12 devices.

So far, I strongly suspect that Image Capture should work, since it has always worked independent of the iTunes syncability with the iOS. Let Nigel Cartwright test Image Capture and get back with us. If we find the cable does allow Image Capture to connect, then we have established the limitation is iTunes itself.

iTunes 12.9 has not been released on Mac OS X, only iTunes 12.8.

iTunes 12.9 is currently what is available for Windows.

My iPhone 7plus was updated to IOS 12 and my iMac(mid 2011) still had the Yosemite OS.

My iTunes didn’t even showed my phone. The photography app was able to sync with it. So I checked and supposedly my iMac shouldn’t be updatable to a later OS. I learned here that it could be done but It was painful. On my appstore it showed a High Sierra update available. I tried to update it to El Capitan first but it was hard to get it (which is stupid by the way) and an error stopped the update. So,having my iMac backup in timemachine and a clone of my disc made some weeks ago I crossed my fingers and went for the direct HighSierra update. First time it didn’t work so I tried it again and made it.

No success on the itunes recognizing my phone though...

Backup and file managing is just a question of Apple wanting or not to enable a iPhone to do it. They don’t want it because it starts like this the way they kill our devices. My IOS 12 made my Wifi start a pain in the ***. It lingers. Hardware isn’t has obsolete has they make us think.

I am so tired of this. Now my iphone 5s is my ipod. Thanx,Apple! So good to carry two of your devices on my pockets all day...Awesome work

I just connected my Mac OS X 10.6.8 Mac to iOS 11.4.1 running iPad Air 2. Image Capture was able to see the photos and movies to move over to the Mac OS X 10.6.8 system. As suggested in my prior post, this means everything except ripped music will still be able to sync to iCloud, and your older Mac. It just won't be with Mac OS X iTunes, if you have exceeded the iOS the iTunes on your Mac supports.

And you can add external storage via Lightning or WiFi that has your ripped music which would just need to be organized by playlist, instead of by album.

This is a workaround, but it saves you from having to buy a newer Mac, another iDevice with an older iOS preinstalled, worry about the lack of the iOS being available with the digital signature online, or having to buy excessive storage on the cloud to backup your photos and movies when the iOS has gotten too new.

I am having the same issue. My iMac is from mid 2011 so it isn’t updatable beyond Yosemite and I can’t even see that itunes version so I am stuck also. I updated my iPhone 7 plus to ios 12 and my Mac’s iTunes doesn’t talk with my iphone either. I’ve tried an alternative to itunes but it doesn’t recognize it either. Yosemite doesn’t talk to it,it seems.
