Is IOS12 compatible with OS X Yosemite?

Is IOS12 compatible with an old MacBook Pro only running OS X Yosemite and iTunes12.8.0.150? Unfortunately, Apple has not come out with a new MacBook Air to which to upgrade beyond Yosemite.

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), Iphone 7Plus

After much work and effort and pain on a lot of people's part, I think I can summarize the answer:

  • Yosemite does not seem to be compatible with IOS12
  • However, in my case I was able to upgrade to El Capitan (10.11.6), despite the fact that:
  • My computer is old (late 2008)
  • there was no update path via the Apple icon and About

  • Apple Tech Support provided me with a link to upgrade to El Capitan and it works!
  • IOS12 and El Capitan are compatible.
  • However when I upgraded to IOS12, I initially could not back up the iPhone on iTunes, despite the fact I had just backed up the iPhone to iTunes a half hour before with the previous IOS.
  • there was no visible iPhone icon next to Music on Itunes
  • iTunes could not see the iphone
  • I called Apple Technical support and the rep ran me through restarting the computer in Safe Mode (shift key when restart)
  • After a very long time, the iPhone icon came up on Itunes
  • I rebooted normally and restarted iTunes and the iPhone icon was there.
  • I then successfully backed up the iPhone.

Thanks for everyone's effort. Now I don't have to immediately have to buy a new Mac (being announced at the end of October?).

High Sierra and other updates are on Apple's website, just need to do a bit of hunting to find them...

My problem is that updating from Yosemite will break the perfectly usable Adobe CS6 I still use every day, the alternative is having to pay big monthly sums for Adobe CC, something I'd struggle to do.

I can understand iOS 12 breaking the link between new and old kit.

What I'm angry about is that Apple could have popped up a dialog box warning me of the incompatability BEFORE the update, rather than after...

I will be updating

iTunes/Mac OS/iOS compatibility

when more information becomes available. Thank you for letting us know about the conundrum. Reading the download page specs for iTunes 12.8 you would think that if you could download it, syncing was possible. Maybe specific devices are only able to sync certain components under older Mac OS X.

Download iTunes 12.8 for Mac has as the system requirements still staying 10.10.5. I will alert the authors of the knowledgebase this thread. Hopefully some clarification comes soon.

Thanks for being the sacrificial lamb. I am sorry. That's what I was trying to avoid and why I asked the question in the first place. What some and Apple think that it is just easy to update to El capitan. However, Apple has locked out my computer from updating to El capitan, because my computer, though very functional, is too old for Apple. And I want to backup to the computer, not the Cloud. So unless I want to back up to the Cloud, I will have to wait on IOS12 until Apple fixes it or they come out with a new MacBook that I can afford.

Potentially the best solution!, although I prefer to keep iCloud/iCloud Drive for other docs, and let iTunes back up my music, (and minimise my gB storage plan!) Also I have a lot of my own music /DJ edits, so never wanted to risk venturing into iTunes Match. I am wondering if connecting the iPhone into somebody else's iTunes (either signed into my iTunes account or theirs) to simply switch on 'sync via WiFi', would then automatically kick start the wifi syncing when my iPhone is in the same wifi network as my macbook.....

Well, I managed to upgrade to High Sierra, but the problem remains - having updated to iOS12 on both my iPhone 6 and my iPad Pro, iTunes will not sync either of them. I've done all the things that Apple suggests (removed all other USB cables, changed ports and used a different Apple provided lightning cable) to no avail.
