Is IOS12 compatible with OS X Yosemite?

Is IOS12 compatible with an old MacBook Pro only running OS X Yosemite and iTunes12.8.0.150? Unfortunately, Apple has not come out with a new MacBook Air to which to upgrade beyond Yosemite.

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), Iphone 7Plus

After much work and effort and pain on a lot of people's part, I think I can summarize the answer:

  • Yosemite does not seem to be compatible with IOS12
  • However, in my case I was able to upgrade to El Capitan (10.11.6), despite the fact that:
  • My computer is old (late 2008)
  • there was no update path via the Apple icon and About

  • Apple Tech Support provided me with a link to upgrade to El Capitan and it works!
  • IOS12 and El Capitan are compatible.
  • However when I upgraded to IOS12, I initially could not back up the iPhone on iTunes, despite the fact I had just backed up the iPhone to iTunes a half hour before with the previous IOS.
  • there was no visible iPhone icon next to Music on Itunes
  • iTunes could not see the iphone
  • I called Apple Technical support and the rep ran me through restarting the computer in Safe Mode (shift key when restart)
  • After a very long time, the iPhone icon came up on Itunes
  • I rebooted normally and restarted iTunes and the iPhone icon was there.
  • I then successfully backed up the iPhone.

Thanks for everyone's effort. Now I don't have to immediately have to buy a new Mac (being announced at the end of October?).

Absolutely agree Nigel. However, Apple usually inform us when older kit won't upgrade, but in most cases it seems that various iDevices do allow an update and I suppose that Apple would argue that they wouldn't know which OS we use on our (old) Macs for backup purposes.

Still, it would have made sense for a popup on the iDevice to warn those of us who use/prefer older OS to avoid the problems they have now caused. Might this simply be (another) ploy to get us to update our computers?!?

Well,I understand your point but I wouldn’t agree. Apple constantly moves from IOS to IOS just to make our perfectly useable hardware obsolete.

I can’t understand why they turn hardware unable to comunicate and do simple backup and file transfers between devices. A simple ,simple task. My iMac is from mid 2011 and supposedly doesn’t update from Yosemite (I don’t know if it is possible to update to highsierra) só it doesn’t talk to my recently updated to ios 12 iphone 7 plus.

I hope they change this but if they don’t it’s programmed obsolescence

Hi Joe,

I understand Apple wanting/needing to evolve and also not having knowledge of/interest in other vendors' product offerings, but I do think they should make it clear what an update to OSX or iOS or any Apple software e.g. iTunes will do with other Apple OSs and software. It seems quite a few of us are unwittingly falling down this blackhole.

Fortunately my wife's iMac is on 10.11 so I did it via hers and accessed my iTunes library via home sharing albeit its a clumsy workaround.

I have emailed Apple to see if its a bug or a deliberate decision as it seems odd that everything else functions, including Remote, and only the USB link is not functioning and without warning.

I find Apple like politicians: the more that raise issues the better and quicker the outcome. Postings here aren't an effective way to achieve answers or a change.

It doesn't show up on the App Store dialog, saying no updates are available (Apple really needs to fix the update process. They seem to be worse than Windows).

Just so you know. The way updates work in the Mac world is that when a new, compatible OS is released, you download the new OS to your Mac. You don't have to install it. You can find it later in your Applications folder under "Install (OS Name)". That way, you have it to be able to install (or reinstall, or downgrade to, or whatever you want to) at any point. I have OS systems available to use going back to Mountain Lion on my Mac. Before Sierra, they were put in your Updates folder in the App Store, so Mountain Lion, El Capitan, and Yosemite are all in my App Store Updates. I don't have Mavericks there because I never downloaded it. High Sierra and Mojave are in my Applications Folder. I'm running Sierra.

If you download the OS update when it is available, then you don't have to involve Apple to help you later.

I also have the same problem. I updated via the iPad and as soon as I tried to sync, I could not. I am locked out of syncing my books, music and recordings. I cannot update readily because of my need for older software.

This is the type of mistake that takes away the joy of using apple products.

Help Anyone. Not clear on how to proceed.

I also backed up my data on the IPAD and tried to go to a windows machine to restore directly from the backup folder placed on an external HD. No directions to be found to solve even at this level.

An update needs to come out or else my investment of a macbook pro and an iPad workflow has disappeared.

I am extremely disappointed.

All of my data is trapped. I can't even go backwards to iOS 11.4 to solve the problem. That should atleast be fixed if you have a back up.

Thanks,Obarillas!I have a imac mid 2011 and from what I saw It couldn’t be updated from Yosemite to anything above but I’ve tried 3 times and at last I managed to update do High Sierra. Nothing new happened. The Photographs app recognizes my 7 plus ios12 but iTunes doesn’t even show it.

I hope the new iTunes update I downloaded today will do the business but I still think it’s a bad idea to update it. I don’t know what Apple thinks about the world they live in. There’s a bunch of people who actually can buy every single product they release but the majority of the world can’t. The valley deepens every year. It’s an elitist brand.

Back up and file management is just protocol you close on us,Apple

Were you able to sync your phone on iTunes -if you downloaded iOS12 ? I was told that it would but I just did my back up today so I might try High Sierra tomorrow. you said that iTunes didn't show it , thats what happened to me, but on Yosemite. Yes its very frustrating that something that is working for you, its changed because new software. I wouldn't mind staying behind in the latest software as long is working. They should put a warning before the update that this will happen. They know that in some systems won't work (like the sync on iPhone with Yosemite and the iOS 12)

Did not have problems with the X running 12 but upgraded to XS max 12.1 last week and that’s a different story. Running el capitan and can’t load photos from my phone to the iMac using photos app. Or Image Capture. IExplorer (bought) does work.

My iPad minis on 12, no problems.

They say I have to upgrade to Mojave, maybe high Sierra to use photos app and then my photoshop may or may not work. Should as 32 bit business is still ok but upgrades are funny. I own the CS5 and do fooking NOT want to subscribe at a monthly fee

So I’ve done a new Time Machine and might be able to step back to El Capitan

I am royally irritated.

I do have this set and when I had the regular old iPhone X (last week) I had no problem - moving up to the iPhone XS MAX is the sticker.

I have also created a new library as a test. No joy. I did a copy over to my big drive and did a repair. no joy

Apple was big on El Capitan being the problem but I am on mojave now and the problem is still with me.

Booting into safe mode, same.
