How do I hide the new sidebar in the news app iOS 12
After upgrading to iOS 12, the Apple news app has a sidebar that takes up much of the screen. How do I hide that sidebar so I may once again enjoy the news app in full screen on my iPad?

According to Read the latest headlines in the Apple News app - Apple Support, Apple calls this sidebar Channels. the article says that you can show and hide the sidebar by touching Channels, and that it’s not necessary on iPad or Mac. I disagree. im pretty sure that forcing the use of 30% of the screen space for interface elements that are only rarely used would break Apple’s own design guidelines.
Please, Apple, put that channels button on iPad (in landscape) and Mac and give us back our screens.
Ding ding ding ding. How this got through without someone wondering, hey that’s 30% of the screen real estate that isn’t ever really used just boggles my mind.
If I can Heart and un-Heart a news article or outlet then it shouldn’t be too hard to do it for that wasted space.
If you hold your iPad in Portrait mode you do have an option to hide / show the sidebar and that works perfectly well. Doesn't seem to appear when holding the device in landscape mode and nothing in settings either. Stupid.
The advice to complete a feedback form at - http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html - should be followed by everyone so that Apple personally receive this feedback. I find that the forums are somewhat fickle to negotiate and this issue for instance occurs under many entries which do not mirror all the answers. I suspect that the forums are only the tip of the iceberg regarding issues like this and that most users just say nothing!
interestingly I looked at the Apple News App in the App Store and there are no reviews. However, there is no provision to leave a review = just shows 5 blank stars With no “leave a review” provision! Other Apple Apps eg Pages, Numbers etc do have provision to leave feedback - conspiracy theory?
There are now 232 reports on the forum with the same question regarding Apple News, iOS12 and iPAD. There is a “hide” button in portrait mode but nothing in landscape. This is unacceptable when viewing (trying) the news in landscape especially if using a keyboard stand/case.
Please report this to Apple using the feedback form at http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html. Hopefully if they receive enough complaints they will remedy this - iOS 12.1 is in beta 1 at the moment so hopefully this will be resolved before public release.
The News channel side panel/column feature of the Apple News app may not be a bug, but works similarly to how the Apple iOS Mail app panels work with two panels always visible when using iOS/Apple Mail app in iPad landscape orientation.
So, this may not be an Apple News design flaw, per se, but an Apple News feature design change/enhancement.
The News channels used to be a second option in the lower screen menu that you had to tap and then tap to choose your news feeds, then return to the main page in the older version of the Apple News app.
Apple made the news channel panel/column always on and available in landscape viewing mode to more easily access and update those news feed channels on the fly, now.
So, once again, this may not be a bug in the Apple News app, at all, but a feature enhancement.
If you do not like this new feature the way it is, you can complain/send feedback to Apple.
The only way to get Apple to really listen to you, DIRECTLY, is to use their feedback portion of their website.
iPad Feedback

Currently, there are ONLY a few hundred users complaining about this Apple News feature/issue.
In order for Apple to affect a change to their News app, there needs to be a WHOLE LOT MORE users making a complaint and sending feedback to Apple about this, like in the thousands, or more.
So, if you want Apple to fix this, perceived, error/oversight/omission/bug, you must tap and post your feedback to Apple per the supplied link.
Good Luck!
You are not reaching anyone from Apple here.
There is no one in ANY of these Apple Support Communities from any Apple product teams, here.
Cognizant or responsible Apple product teams, designers and engineers do not read, nor participate in these Apple technical support communities.
These are, largely, user to user Apple product support communities.
I and others, in these Apple product support communities, are simply Apple product users, just like you, that volunteer our own time and knowledge here.
Apple supplies these forums for users to work out their product issues with other users, but these community forums ARE monitored/moderated by Apple Staff, as well as Apple Community Supoort Specialists, assigned to these community forums, but I do not think any specific user posted info is ever passed on to who/mever the cognizant parties are who would need to know if there are any mounting issues with any Apple product or software.
These ASC ONLY moderators and staffers, due to Apple privacy policies, do not forward any info contained/obtained from ANY postings within these communities to any cognizant Apple staff, teams or individuals.

iPad Feedback
I fail to understand why Apple take 30% of the screen are for an item that should be a drop down at best. I use News heavily and always in landscape. The persistent side bar is ruining the app experience. I hope it's an oversight that will be quickly rectified, but I fear it is not.
Not only a huge part of the screen is now useless, but swiping from left to right to go back is extremely inconvenient. Please provide a way to hide it in landscape mode, it’s beyond stupid. For now switching to Microsoft News or Google News, too frustrating to use.
Me too!
I am (or was?) a very regular user of Apple News on my iPad rather than my iPhone which is too small for easy reading even with specs!
I had News set up with all my choices set up from the hidden, bottom bar. Now updated to iOS 12.0 which seems fine apart from this latest travety. Yes, no side bar on iPad in portrait mode, which isn’t what it was designed for especially when using a keyboard stand case. On the iPhone there is no side bar in either portrait or landscape.
So the bottom line is this needs an immediate fix from the genius programmers at Apple. It needs a clickable <HIDE> button or drop down/up feature to remove this incursion and allow full use of the iPad screen for easy reading of news articles. A brilliant App Service ruined. Remember the old adage - “If it ain’t broke - don’t fix it”?
Agreed. Even a minimal level of user interface testing should have shown that a user should have ability to hide the sidebar. The reason for using landscape instead of portrait is to increase the width of the display area. When you force 1/3 of the screen to be used for the sidebar it makes switching from portrait to landscape useless. Apple, you used to be better than this!
When I first tried out the News app and discovered the problem with landscape mode on the iPad I tried out portrait which worked fine. I hadn’t realised that it had defaulted to a view without sidebar. I have looked into this again and there is indeed a square “button” simulating a screen with lines down the left at the top of the side panel which toggles the side panel on or off (disappears when off). THIS IS THE FEATURE MISSING IN LANDSCAPE!!!
I called support and completed the www.apple.com/feedback form. This has to be a bug with a simple fix given it works right in portrait. The more than complete the feedback form the quicker it gets fixed In iOS 12.1
Michael posted a feedback link on the previous page. Use that to tell Apple your thoughts. Feedback is logged and counted....posts on this forum are just posts on the forum. If you want apple to change the sidebar, send them feedback to prove to them how many people like/dislike that function
