How do I hide the new sidebar in the news app iOS 12
After upgrading to iOS 12, the Apple news app has a sidebar that takes up much of the screen. How do I hide that sidebar so I may once again enjoy the news app in full screen on my iPad?

christinefrommaryland - You should just be able to turn your iPad through 90 degrees (into portrait mode) and the app will display in that mode with the option to display / hide the sidebar.
If you hold your iPad in Portrait mode you do have an option to hide / show the sidebar and that works perfectly well. Doesn't seem to appear when holding the device in landscape mode and nothing in settings either. Stupid.
You are not reaching anyone from Apple here.
There is no one in ANY of these Apple Support Communities from any Apple product teams, here.
Cognizant or responsible Apple product teams, designers and engineers do not read, nor participate in these Apple technical support communities.
These are, largely, user to user Apple product support communities.
I and others, in these Apple product support communities, are simply Apple product users, just like you, that volunteer our own time and knowledge here.
Apple supplies these forums for users to work out their product issues with other users, but these community forums ARE monitored/moderated by Apple Staff, as well as Apple Community Supoort Specialists, assigned to these community forums, but I do not think any specific user posted info is ever passed on to who/mever the cognizant parties are who would need to know if there are any mounting issues with any Apple product or software.
These ASC ONLY moderators and staffers, due to Apple privacy policies, do not forward any info contained/obtained from ANY postings within these communities to any cognizant Apple staff, teams or individuals.

This stated,
The News channel side panel/column feature of the Apple News app may not be a bug, but works similarly to how the Apple iOS Mail app panels work with two panels always visible when using iOS/Apple Mail app in iPad landscape orientation.
So, this may not be an Apple News design flaw, per se, but an Apple News feature design change/enhancement.
The News channels used to be a second option in the lower screen menu that you had to tap and then tap to choose your news feeds, then return to the main page in the older version of the Apple News app.
Apple made the news channel panel/column always on and available in landscape viewing mode to more easily access and update those news feed channels on the fly, now.
So, once again, this may not be a bug in the Apple News app, at all, but a feature enhancement.
Currently, there are ONLY a few hundred users ( currently, over 400 users, now ) complaining about this Apple News feature/issue in the iPad support communities.
For Apple to affect a change to their News app, there needs to be a WHOLE LOT MORE users making a complaint and sending feedback to Apple about this, like in the thousands, or more.
So, if you want Apple to fix this, perceived, error/oversight/omission/bug, you must tap and post your feedback to Apple per the link I supplied above.
Good Luck to You!
Not in iPad’s horizontal, landscape orientation.
This does not work in iPad’s landscape orientation.
Both the news channel side panel and the main news panel are always present in iPad landscape orientation mode/view in a similar manner/fashion to how the iOS Mail app works on iPads.
When in landscape orientation on iPad both the mailbox panel and mail content panels are always present.
In portrait mode, you can dismiss the mailbox panel to have just the email content window.
The new iOS 12 News app appears to work similarly.
There is no way to know if this is a bug, or not.
But, if enough users post complaint feedback about how the News app currently works, Apple may change the current way the iOS 12 News app works.

Currently as of 10-07-18 you can not hide the channel sidebar. As intelligent as the Apple team is as a whole I refuse to believe that this was purposeful. Surely this is a bug, Apple has always been know to present material in the most elegant manner possiblewhile allowing users customizing options. Creating a sidebar that you rarely use, taking up 30% percent of the viewing area without the ability to hide it is most certainly a bug. I mean come on, to think that we would constantly be modifying our interests several times a day to warrant a permanent “channel“ side panel is just plain silly. Apple has the best & brightest on their team, let’s not insult Apple by assuming that they would actually implement something this ridiculous on purpose. Unfourtanetly I've been so turned off by the viewing experience, I now have discovered Google News.
Swipe left and it disappears. Swipe right and it reappears.
If Apple is not being made fully aware of this issue and/or not enough users complain about this, Apple may not fix this.

Apple may not fix if only a few paltry hundred of users have sent feedback about this.

I've been reviewing Apple's Developer Human Interface Guidelines documentation (freely accessible for those that care to go looking for it).
As you may expect, this document goes into iOS App Interface design in considerable detail. Drilling through its content is an interesting and educational exercise - and when you find the appropriate section(s), reveals the information that we require if we are to understand the thinking that informs App design in the world of iOS.
In my following comments I will attempt to follow the terminology referenced therein - but hopefully you'll get the idea...
The iOS12 News App utilises something that Apple describes as "Split View". This view, valid in both landscape and portrait screen modes, presents information with either two side-by-side or slide-over panes of content - a primary pane intended for persistent content - and a secondary pane for related information. In iOS11, Split View was not utilised for the News App, instead a Tab Bar was used to navigate news content.
The comprehensive guidelines clearly state that the Split View primary pane can be hidden off-screen when not in use, as is the case for the iOS12 News App in portrait mode; the document does not make any suggestion that the primary pane must be persistent in landscape mode, but neither does it say that it must be possible to hide it. The decision to hide the primary pane, or not, is left to the App designer.
Whilst all of us here appear to agree that the new iOS12 News App design, in landscape mode, is [to be polite] sub-optimal, Apple's News App designers may disagree with our viewpoint. It is possible, much as we hope otherwise, that the observed behavior to display a persistent primary pane in landscape mode is intentional (as is the case in some other iPad Applications - such as Mail).
In summary, we can but hope that the persistent primary pane in landscape is a coding error (bug) - or, if this is intentional, we must hope that Apple may listen to reasoned argument to change the App such that the primary pane may be hidden in both portrait and landscape screen modes. Either way, the key here is direct communication and dialogue with Apple.
Having spent considerable time attempting to discover and make objective analysis of any merit associated with having a persistent primary pane in landscape, speaking as one only individual, I cannot find a relative benefit in presenting a persistent primary pane; it serves no useful purpose, but simply absorbs 30% of otherwise useful screen space - that might otherwise be utilised to present more readable content (this being the principal purpose of a News-reading App).
Above comments aside, I can understand that Apple like to refresh their Apps - and, personally, whilst I'm still to be convinced with the redesign of the News App, I have some understanding of what they are trying to achieve. If the primary pane in landscape can be changed from persistent to slide-over, duplicating behavior in portrait (where we are able to hide the unwanted primary), we can all get used to the new thrilling features of the App that Apple intend us to enjoy.

iPad Feedback
Michael posted a feedback link on the previous page. Use that to tell Apple your thoughts. Feedback is logged and counted....posts on this forum are just posts on the forum. If you want apple to change the sidebar, send them feedback to prove to them how many people like/dislike that function
The advice to complete a feedback form at - http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html - should be followed by everyone so that Apple personally receive this feedback. I find that the forums are somewhat fickle to negotiate and this issue for instance occurs under many entries which do not mirror all the answers. I suspect that the forums are only the tip of the iceberg regarding issues like this and that most users just say nothing!
interestingly I looked at the Apple News App in the App Store and there are no reviews. However, there is no provision to leave a review = just shows 5 blank stars With no “leave a review” provision! Other Apple Apps eg Pages, Numbers etc do have provision to leave feedback - conspiracy theory?
As the great Bard once said...much ado about nothing.
Apple may change it one day..or may remain mean spirited and keep the pointless list forever. Who cares?
There are so many other..and a couple much better news apps available from a Google News, AP, Flipboard, News 360, Newsify, Buzzfeed, USA Today and on and on...why be frustrated by a bug they obviously don’t care about fixing that bothers people they don’t listen to?
Delete it and set your anxieties free!
I fear that you may well be correct. Unfortunately, this design change to the News App is doubly bad for users who previously loved the News App. In iOS 12.x, not only do they lose 30% of usable screen space (that was previously and usefully utilised to display wanted readable content), but it introduces another major usability issue...
In portrait-mode, the user is conditioned to swiping to the left to dismiss the unwanted left-pane - so as to read the underlying content. Repeating this “conditioned” gesture within landscape-mode results in removal (yes, removal) of the existing monitored news channel below your finger. Not clever!
iOS 12 promised much in the way of improvements and new features - but has (a) delivered many retrograde changes that seriously detract from an otherwise wonderful product - and (b) introduced many other serious bugs that are not been addressed by either 12.0.1 or 12.1. It appears that Apple’s focus is introduction of new features, rather than fixing issues that they introduce along the way.
