How do I hide the new sidebar in the news app iOS 12
After upgrading to iOS 12, the Apple news app has a sidebar that takes up much of the screen. How do I hide that sidebar so I may once again enjoy the news app in full screen on my iPad?

Totally agree David.
Unfortunately there are those contributors who seem to make excuses for Apple on this one!
I agree it is not the same scenario as Apple Mail and that every complainant should report this to Apple via the iPad reporting form.
Although now retired, my experience working with applications programmers is that when major operating system updates are introduced they invariably recode applications. As a result it is not uncommon to loose functionality in some applications. However such functionality is promptly fixed when the end users report back. Apple beta testers probably would not look at Apple News as a working programme as their concerns are more with the general iOS running. I also said in an earlier post that in the App Store you can leave a review about the Pages and Numbers Apps but the News App does not cater for this which is a pity because it lends itself to reporting back to the actual App developer as opposed to the systems programmers. App developers do read feed back and respond as well.
I think this is the tip of the iceberg and the questions should be asked as to how many consumers use Apple News and of these how many read on iPhone (no problem), iPad in portrait (no problem) or indeed on a MacBook (no problem). It is only those, like me, who read (or now try to) Apple News on an iPad with keyboard case ie in landscape who have an issue and potentially may, as have others, abandon this application
This is all a pity because Apple News has good news content as well as the ability to pick up news items from selected newspapers and magazines etc. which can be selected in (channels)” which previously was hidden in the bottom bar and now as a left pane which is hide able except in landscape on an iPad.

Apple wont correct this untill enough people complain. You have to go to the feedback and post there. They don’t listen here.
Regrettably, this issue is NOT FIXED in iOS 12.1.
Did you read the entire post?
A fix for this is coming in iOS 12.1.1, which, hopefully, will be coming very soon.
Ding ding ding ding. How this got through without someone wondering, hey that’s 30% of the screen real estate that isn’t ever really used just boggles my mind.
If I can Heart and un-Heart a news article or outlet then it shouldn’t be too hard to do it for that wasted space.
According to Read the latest headlines in the Apple News app - Apple Support, Apple calls this sidebar Channels. the article says that you can show and hide the sidebar by touching Channels, and that it’s not necessary on iPad or Mac. I disagree. im pretty sure that forcing the use of 30% of the screen space for interface elements that are only rarely used would break Apple’s own design guidelines.
Please, Apple, put that channels button on iPad (in landscape) and Mac and give us back our screens.
When I first tried out the News app and discovered the problem with landscape mode on the iPad I tried out portrait which worked fine. I hadn’t realised that it had defaulted to a view without sidebar. I have looked into this again and there is indeed a square “button” simulating a screen with lines down the left at the top of the side panel which toggles the side panel on or off (disappears when off). THIS IS THE FEATURE MISSING IN LANDSCAPE!!!
I called support and completed the www.apple.com/feedback form. This has to be a bug with a simple fix given it works right in portrait. The more than complete the feedback form the quicker it gets fixed In iOS 12.1
Yes, just installed the update and it's not fixed. It may well be that we have to wait for iOS12.1 - who knows. What I can confirm is that the same News App that came with MacOS Mojave does have the feature to show / hide the sidebar as you'd expect - even though it's less of an issue on a 21inch screen. Therefore I really can't see that it's a deliberate design decision for iOS12 as some are suggesting.
I've been in the Apple ecosystem for about six years - my perception is that things like this are more common than they used to be.
I said this before, but this behavior IS NOT comparable to Mail. Mail's persistent sidebar is a list of messages. The current persistent sidebar in News is the Mail equivalent of a persistent Mailboxes sidebar in Mail—which is not the case. The Mailbox sidebar continues to be able to be hidden at will. Further, the persistent Channels sidebar in iOS12 IS able to be hidden and shown at will in News.app on MacOS Mojave, which makes it seem even more out of place and out of character.
Everyone should definitely provide feedback to Apple at the link already provided in this thread. The more they hear, the faster it will get fixed.
The separate, but related issue—I fear—is that, once the sidebar becomes hide-able, the font size used to display article headlines and summaries will remain nearly microscopic at Retina resolution and the space it occupied will remain empty, as is the case in News.app on the MacBook Pro.
If you haven’t figured this out, already Apple is not present in these user to user Apple product technical support communities.
We are all just Apple product user here. Just like you.
The only way to get Apple to, DIRECTLY, listen to you is to use their feedback portion of their website.
iPad Feedback
Thanks for repeating the link for those who aren't aware. And, yes, i have already given feedback via the link.
Personally, i've installed the apps of some of the news sources that i prefer, like Politico and NPR; now i don't get distracted by some of the BuzzFeed and People news that aren't of any interest to me, except briefly, occasionally.
Once in a while i still check Apple News or Google News, but i prefer a more focused input.
You can delete the app. I don’t have it on my ipad.
It’s been said up thread that a fix is coming with iOS 12.1.1
If your goal is to simply express your feelings, there is also the link to feedback posted up thread. Apple does not read this forum beyond moderating it.
Have just downloaded the public release of iOS 12.1.1 and the sidebar fix for landscape is there. Slight downside is that the setting is not defaultable. In portrait if it is switched off this remains so after closing the app and then re-opening. With the landscape “fix” if switched off and the app is closed and then re-opened it defaults to sidebar on!! A pity but at least it can be turned off again.
Many thanks to all the fellow forum newbies who highlighted the original issue often against the odds according to the profits of doom!
”All’s Well That Ends Well” - almost!
