How do I hide the new sidebar in the news app iOS 12
After upgrading to iOS 12, the Apple news app has a sidebar that takes up much of the screen. How do I hide that sidebar so I may once again enjoy the news app in full screen on my iPad?

The portrait view of News shows a red icon. click On it to make sidebar disappear. No icon available le landscape view. go figure!
Since I read the news in Landscape mode I will use the Microsoft app until this one offers a full screen.
Agree this is a bug or something they have missed in the update. It doesn’t make sense to Have a poor view8ng experience in landscap. It’s back to Flipboard till they fix.
I feel like several 100 users complaining in the short time “days” the update has been released is quite substantial. Like I said google news is available & offers a much cleaner experience.
I fail to understand why Apple take 30% of the screen are for an item that should be a drop down at best. I use News heavily and always in landscape. The persistent side bar is ruining the app experience. I hope it's an oversight that will be quickly rectified, but I fear it is not.
Not only a huge part of the screen is now useless, but swiping from left to right to go back is extremely inconvenient. Please provide a way to hide it in landscape mode, it’s beyond stupid. For now switching to Microsoft News or Google News, too frustrating to use.
Me too!
I am (or was?) a very regular user of Apple News on my iPad rather than my iPhone which is too small for easy reading even with specs!
I had News set up with all my choices set up from the hidden, bottom bar. Now updated to iOS 12.0 which seems fine apart from this latest travety. Yes, no side bar on iPad in portrait mode, which isn’t what it was designed for especially when using a keyboard stand case. On the iPhone there is no side bar in either portrait or landscape.
So the bottom line is this needs an immediate fix from the genius programmers at Apple. It needs a clickable <HIDE> button or drop down/up feature to remove this incursion and allow full use of the iPad screen for easy reading of news articles. A brilliant App Service ruined. Remember the old adage - “If it ain’t broke - don’t fix it”?
Agreed. Even a minimal level of user interface testing should have shown that a user should have ability to hide the sidebar. The reason for using landscape instead of portrait is to increase the width of the display area. When you force 1/3 of the screen to be used for the sidebar it makes switching from portrait to landscape useless. Apple, you used to be better than this!
Totally agree - report it to Apple using the link earlier in this thread to the official reporting form.
I can see why someone thought it was a good idea to have the sidebar to access your personally set channels BUT this should be hide-able when not required (as in portrait mode).
It’s akin to reading a book or magazine where the index is always there on the left even when you turn pages!
Apple screwed this one up. The simple things in life should be easy, like reading the news.but apple chose to take up screen space with useless sidebar. On a side note they also moved the time from the middle to where it is crowded with the date on the left. I’ll talk to Steve Jobs about these very bad mistakes in iOS 12.
Yes, already have done. I happened to need to go to my local Apple Store yesterday for a battery service and brought it up with someone there. They were surprised at the error not being spotted before release and the guy was also going to feedback.
This will be looked at as a User Interface issue but this - and the obvious UI layout issue in the Albums view of the new Photos App - makes me wonder if that sort of testing takes a back seat to performance type stuff. He said he'd feedback on the Photos app issue as well.
I agree. I used to read Apple News every night while eating dinner, on my iPad, angled in landscape. I don’t like reaing in partial screen, so won’t be accessing it as often. Will read a book instead.
Oh, i complained directly to Apple right after i downloaded it. And, another problem is that occasionally my thumb or finger hits one of the other options and changes me out of the story that i was reading.
plus, i'm not interested in some of the categories and i've edited them to no avail.
Will submit another complaint. thanks
I just installed the update, and News is still hosed. In software development it is possible to have bugs in all phases, including design and implementation. I originally assumed this was an implementation bug that should be easy to fix. Since it wasn’t fixed in the update I think it is either a design bug, which may be harder to fix, or Apple doesn’t consider it to be a bug. If that is the case, it is a fairly heavy-handed feature of which Apple should be ashamed.
It not a bug it is a “design feature” apple stopped caring a long time ago about making software features as well as design features that are controllable by the user. This can be seen by safari, we cant have non-apple apps that can be seamlessly integrated. Whom ever made the decision to feel we only want to or only should read the news in profile. Here’s to those of us who think differently.
