iPhone Xs and Xs max charging issue effecting all phones

Hi all

I believe there may be a charging issue with the new iPhones (possibly Ios12 software) effecting all , though this may go unnoticed.

It seems if you have “raise to wake” turned off, and you turn your phone screen off( give it between 20-30 seconds) then plug a charger in it won’t reconise it.

If you then Unplug the charger and turn the screen on then plug the charger in again it’s works fine.

Hope this makes sense , looking forward to hearing any responce.

If you have a charging issue with your XS Max, you'd best have it checked out at your local Apple Store.

Did you see the battery charge indicator come in when you plugged in your cord?

Sorry if I’m not in the correct forum. But I’m in the uk and had this problem from getting the phone out of the box.

If I use the wireless charging never have an issue. However if I use chargers on occasions it charges on occasion it doesn’t.

I have contacted Apple on the first day already and spoke to a technician who had never heard the fault. But did say I can have a replacement but none in stock and no idea when I’d get a replacement.

However I don’t believe it’s hardware but more software.

I’ve plugged in lightning headphones and even the work with out unlocking the phone each time.

What also puzzles me. I paid £100 for a Belkin Valet to only find that doesn’t work with XSMax, XR, XS.

So I’m not impressed at that. So my question is. What has apple done to the charging port, what has apple done to the Belkin to stop that from working as a apple 5W charger works fine and the bekin is more powerful.

Has apple altered something on the port it self to make it less crackable. Would apple also like to pay me £100 for a product I can’t use but it has a compatible MFI port.

All my power banks work fine so why not Belkin and why not when it’s a sleep. Shouldn’t the phone be able to know what’s a charger and what isn’t. Or is the phone looking at something in iOS 12 or is there a design flaw ?

The Belkin valet issue is being addressed by Belkin; they explicitly state the Valet is incompatible with the new phones but they are making efforts to give credits to existing owners towards purchase of a new compatible Valet. The offers differ by person, so contact them and find out what they are willing to do for you.

Read the link I posted immediately above your post to learn more about why you may need to change settings to get charging via a Lightning cord to work the way you are used to.

It is Not working how it should. I can simply hit my power button to turn off the screen and the cable is not recognized. Screen must be awake for it to charge. This is after a couple of seconds of the screen being off, not the new security feature they added to the port.

Then there is something wrong with your phone. Make a Genius Bar appointment and they will either fix it or replace it. BTW, how do you know it’s not charging when the screen is of? There is no charge indicator when it’s off.

Because on my wifes XS or my older iPhones and iPads as soon as you plug in the cable the phone chimes, screen turns on and shows it charging... My phone is not powered off, the screen is off. It works if the screen is on. It does not work reliably with the screen off. I have tried 3 different Apple cables, 3 different aftermarket cables that work on all other Apple devices and 5 different bricks from the small one included all the way up to a large multiport USB charger.

I tried making a Genius Bar appointment. They have a 1 week wait to get in or I can come stand in the first come first serve area. Since my phone is days old I am going back to T Mobile to see about a return/exchange although others are saying exchanged ones are doing it as well.

This also applies to a recently bought lightning cable form the Apple Store. So in my opinion this indicates a certain batch of lightning cables have this issue, as my Twelve South iPhone dock attached with a short genuine Apple cable works fine every time, regardless of screen being on or not. Hope this is not a hardware problem on the new phones!

Well, the charging bug is still with us (as of 10/19/2018), although it may be more subtle now.

I have an XS Max, running iOS 12.0.1, and last night the phone did not charge at all. Coincidentally this morning I had to enter my passcode to unlock the phone, because the Face ID had timed out (you know, one has to enter the passcode after continuously using Face ID for 156 hours).

I suspect that the phone did not charge because of the Face ID timeout.

I’ve seen the reports of the XS and XS Max charging issue where they won’t charge if they’re asleep and you have to raise to wake them first. I’m not experiencing that issue however I am experiencing a more bizarre issue in that out of the two mobile power packs I have (1) and older RAVPower 16,750mAh pack with a 2.1 and 2.4A USB A ports and a newer (2) TUMI 6,000mAh pack with a built in lightning connector cable and an extra USB A port.

The RAVPower works just fine when connected by USB A to Lightning cable to my iPhone XS regardless of whether its awake, unlocked or otherwise. The TUMI however (and this seemed to start happening after the most recent 12.1 update I think) is that when it’s connected to the built in lightning cable doesn’t register it at all. The TUMI starts to flash briefly indicating it’s charging the device, but the iPhone doens’t show it’s charging and even after leaving it connected for hours doesn’t charge. However, if I connect my wife’s iPad Pro 9.7 or her iPhone 7 to that same built in cable, it starts charging those devices right away. Furthermore, if I use a separate cable and the USB A port on the pack and connect it to my iPhone XS it starts charging so I know it’s not an issue with the power pack or the cable but given it is only the built in cable and my iPhone XS that wont work together I can’t figure out why this would be the case.

As far as I know the built in cable is at minimum a 2.1A 5V current so it shouldn’t have any issue charging the iPhone XS. Plus the fact that it charges an iPad Pro 9.7 or the iPhone 7 means it’s obviously working.

I’ve tried resetting my iPhone XS, turning off the USB security in settings, everything I could think of but nothing fixes the problem. Furthermore, my iPhone XS seems to work with the RAVPower or any other third party charger/cable I have laying around.

Any ideas what could be causing such an isolated issue with this one particular power pack?

Note: I tried to post this as separate question but this community forum wont let me post saying ”I’m not allowed to create or post content” for some reason which is just another frustrating experience. It’s not like I’ve posted anything innapropriate or whatever that would have got me banned. So I was able to post it here as a reply.
