iPhone Xs and Xs max charging issue effecting all phones

The situation you describe may be as designed:

Lightning-Based Charging May Not Work If Your Device Has Been Idle over an Hour or You Did Not Use a Cable Within the past Three Days

I hadn't thought of that. Still working all the new features into my troublshooting repertoire.

Don’t have this issue, I have raise to wake turned off

I have used a Mac Mini and Anker charger.

iPhone XS Max The phone doesn't charge until you wake up or tap in the screen, and sometimes I even have to twist and turn the lightning cable in order to begin the charging.

The 5W charger is - 5 watts. It will not charge as fast as a 12 watt or a 30 watt. However, if you follow the best practice of charging overnight, every night, it won't matter how fast it charges.

If I connect charging cable when the display is off it won’t charge. But If I wake up the display and connect the charger it charges?

Why it’s happening?

What to do?

If you remove the lightning cable from the phone, turn it round and plug it back in it will start charging (mine and a friend's does any way). Seems to apply to the supplied charging cable

my iphone had the same issue.

After a SOFTRESET it works very well!!

If you didn't already find it, update your iOS to v12.0.1 which addresses some charging issues for the XS family of phones. Settings / General / Software Update

Its most likely that you have dirt in your Lightning port. Get a bright light and a toothpick and clean it out.

What, straight out of the box?! Hmm, me doubts that
