I just bought an iPad 10.5 and the sleep/wake function isn't working on it with the smart cover. I tested the cover with an older iPad (3, I think), and it worked just fine. How can I get the new iPad to respond to the cover?

Also try this:
If your iPad doesn't wake and sleep when you open and close the Smart Cover, go to Settings > Display & Brightness and turn on Lock/Unlock.

Did you purchase a smart cover that goes with/fits the 10.5 inch iPad Pro OR are you trying to use an existing, older smart cover with that new 10.5 inch screen iPad Pro?
Did you make sure to setup the smart cover to work with the iPad Pro by going into the Settings app, under Display and Brightness and TURN ON the Lock/Unlock toggle switch?
This is strange.
Someone else in these iPad communities is having this exact same issue with the missing option and that person can't get the smart cover to work, either. That person is using a 6th gen, 2018, 9.7 inch screen iPad, though.

Think this maybe a bug with iOS 12.

I bought a new cover. The only reason why I mentioned the older iPad is because I was trying to determine whether the cover was defective or if it was a problem with the iPad. The cover doesn't actually fit my older iPad, but it does wake it up.
As far as I can tell, there's no such setting on my iPad. When I search under settings it claims it's there, but I don't see it. Here's a screen shot of what I can see.
Smart covers DO NOT come with an iPad.
They have to be purchased separately as an accessory.
What I meant was if it was purchased to fit with it 🙂
Thank you for trying. Nothing is helping, so I'm gonna go with the support idea.
Also, try a hard reset of your iPad by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake buttons simultaneously until your iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons.
