I had same issue, you need to update macOS to mojave to get updated iTunes or redownload iTunes 12.8 from https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/macos and then choose install drivers when prompted after connecting you iPhone
Add me to the list of people who noticed this bug as well. My iPhone XS Max syncs just fine with iTunes 12.8 on High Sierra. But no icon for it appears.
My mid-2011 iMac is sadly abandoned by Apple so Mojave cannot be upgraded to. Is iTunes 12.9 needed to resolve this issue?
Same for me
Have you logged into your XS Max? and then Trust This Computer?
I had already updated iTunes to 12.9 with Mojave before that.
I called Apple. Did a screen share.
Engineer thinks it’s a bug.
They’re looking into it.
Same issue here. I noticed the icon was there for sure before I upgraded to Mojave. Afterward, it was gone. I figured it was a bug.

I’ll plug in me old iPod later.
See if the avatar comes up.
Plugged in me iPod classic and the logo appears. Xs Max has issues.
Yep. Plugged in my old iPod video and it shows a white iPod video icon.
Thanks - same here and figured it must be a bug - other devices show up. At least is syncs !
