Aluminum Pitting on the 2018 MBP

Hi All,

I bought a space gray MBP a little over a month ago. Right out of the box I saw a tiny tiny speck of white, thought it was dust. Last night I was cleaning my MBP, and noticed that little dot has gotten larger and more noticeable, and it couldn't be wiped off. Upon further inspection I realized it was a teeny tiny pinhole as if something has punctured it (not really a good word to describe it, and learned it the hard way not to use it since when I talked to customer service they wouldn't let go of the fact that I used it and said that I myself may have punctured my MBP lol.)

After a little googling I found out this thing called aluminum pitting and I could see posts from 12, 13 years ago regarding this issue. Apparently some people have unique pH and Apple does not cover this since they consider this "cosmetic". Some people have even encountered severe discoloration due to the same type of chemical issue.

Talked to the online support (they later told me they're only there for software issues, ) and they said they couldn't determine what the cause was, but did imply that I might have accidentally hit my computer without knowing.

I told him I treat this computer more gently than I do my boyfriend.

I really like how the online support tried to shift the blame on me. "Happened by accident without knowing, (even though a mark like this, if caused by a hit, would have happened in the factory since it was there right out of the box)" I don't leave my lid open when I'm away from my MBP, and when I'm using it I treat it like a baby. I wash both my hands rigorously and take off all jewelries before each use. I'm kicking myself hard for not taking pictures when I took this out of the box, and now I have no proof that the little dot has been there since day one and is getting worse. Will start doing this from now on with Apple products (if I decide to buy more of them), since apparently a 2.5k MBP can't be trusted to last.

Anyone else having the same issue? I've seen many cases being dismissed since the folks at the Genius Bar tend to rule this as cosmetic and not covered by warranty. Not sure if I should go to the Apple Store since it might turn out to be a huge waste of time.

And also, is there really the need for palm rest guards? My 6 year old MacBook Air never needed those. Are MacBooks made of tin now, they're so fragile and can't stand on its own without protective accessories?

When you described the issue, I sort of had the impression that the MacBook was completely damaged and worthless from the horrific body damage you described. Than I saw the picture you posted. I have commented on the picture. I've also included a link to a boating website where aluminum pitting is a normal state of affairs, and where there are solutions for removing the pitting.

Short of that, an automotive body shop may be able to restore your damaged MacBook shell to like new condition.

Please understand, I am respectful of everyone here in the Communities, and I understand that problems are important to the folks who take the time to post questions about them.

Thanks for the reply. I know it’s supet tiny, and it even disappears in certain lightings, that’s why at first I thought I’d wiped it off (again, thought it was dust/lint.) That’s why I never paid any attention to it even though I saw it right after unboxing the computer. Sorry if my previous description scared you lol

Lol I know the speaker holes are supposed to be there, and yes one or two of the holes had lint stuck in it, I later vacuumed them with a tiny keyboard vacuum cleaner.

I’m taking it to the Genius Bar next weekend, and see if they’ll repair this since the computer came like this. If not, as long as they can assure me that it has nothing to do with the coating and won’t get worse over time, I’m happy.
