Camera glass cracked on XS Max

I got my iphone XS Max 3 days ago. The glass on the unit was already cracked. but because I received my delivery by mail, I do not get any warranty or repair! I wonder how Apple are able to solve this error that was already known on the X models?

Same issue here. My XS Mas is 3 days old. Been in a case since i bought it. Actually still have the original plastic on the back so there is no pitting from dirt or dust getting back there. I noticed last night (end of day 2) that there was a small chip/crack to the right of the microphone and a very faint hairline crack going to the LED flash. Not happy after paying $1200 and getting this type of quality! Taking it back to Verizon to get a replacement and we'll see how that goes.

Also have the same problem, a month old and have a cracked camera cover, went in store and was told this glass is the strongest glass made and must of had considerable force to be smashed(I laughed) I asked 2 store attendants to examine the phone and neither could point out that the phone even had wear marks from being in my pocket, and was in absolutely mint condition, anyway said it’s almost impossible to break the glass and was sent on my way unless I payed $900. Very interesting reading how impossible it is to break and having so many broken, I’ve been a loyal customer until NOW.

I’ve thought about this problem. It seems that most customers have cracking stemming from the microphone hole in the glass. I’m guessing that either a microcrack is created manufacturing process that you can’t initially see until it gets larger over normal use. Or Another possibility is that the hole is a weak point. Any flexing of the glass can cause it to crack. I tend to think it’s a combination of these two things.

I just noticed my camera cover glass is cracked as well. Same place as everyone else on this thread, it seems to emanate from the microphone cutout. I’ve had it in a case since the day I purchased it and have babied the phone since day 1.

My phone has only ever been in my pocket or laying flat on a table since I’ve had it. This seems like a design flaw to me. One that Apple hasn’t acknowledged yet.

I’ll try Apple Support but it doesn’t look like I will get very far. I’ve only had the phone 3 months. The fact that so many people have had this problem and it hasn’t been acknowledged by Apple yet is not very comforting.

If I get the news that I’ll have to pay for a replacement device, I’ll be selling this one for what I can get for it, cut my losses, and get a Pixel 4.

Update 1

I tried Apple Support via Messages on iPhone and sent them a picture. Of course they recommended I go to the nearest Apple Store (2+ hours away, no thanks). I'm reaching out via Twitter now. I'm slowly going to exhaust all options and see how far I can get up the chain. I'll continue to update on my progress.

I did find that this type of cracking has also been happening on the iPhone X as well.

Bought my first XS Max in January. Noticed the lens cover was cracked about a month or so in. I went into the apple store in Clinton Twp Mi where I paid $99 for my replacement. Fine. Maybe it was me and I made a mistake. Where the issue is, I’m on my second XSM and the same identical thing has happen. Hair line crack starting at the top of the mic outlet. Mine is entirely blown out now. Apple this ones on you. I’ll be in touch with upper leadership about this issue. You have 4 pages of customers that have the same defect. Coincidence, I think not.

I got my iPhone XS Max in January 2019, within a few weeks a triangular crack developed near the flash. Got my device replaced in February but, I am seeing this pattern developing again on this new device as well. I took it back to the store today, it seems it is a $599 replace/repair! Which means for no fault of mine I have to accept a device that does not justifies its high price with respect to its material quality! Please note that this is not a damage due to a drop or anything like that and is not a very pleasant experience to convince or negotiate with the technicians at Apple stores!

Just been into Bluewater store with same issue and told it would be classed as damage. They require 1% of devices to be affected before they class it as a manufacturing fault.. with the numbers they sell I cannot see this happening. They offer no real way to report this issue, that I’m aware of, so can they track this kind of issue.

Decided not to use my apple care at this time, just in case I need it down the line at some point.

I have the same problem, Mine was XS max, and i never dropped my phone, not even once, and i see a crack on the glass covering the camera, I see all the replies for your post and understood no one got any hep from apple, this is a ****** design from apple and they have to answer to us after all spending 1200 dollars on their product. Any ideas how to report this issue to consumer goods department or highlight this issue in twitter and make it to reach apple ??

Same thing happened to me. Noticed a crack on my camera screen a few weeks back. Took a half day off work to drive to the Apple store. Was told that it was user damage and that it would cost $549 to replace since I didn't have Apple Care. Like other users, my phone stays in an Apple Case and I'm very protective of it. I've had an iPhone since the 1st generation and never had an issue with a broken screen, etc. I'd like to try and fix it on my own, but want to wait to see if Apple "MANS" up and fixes the design flaw. My biggest worry now is water getting into the phone.

Same issue here, I’ve also always had my IPhone Max Xs in an otter box. Never dropped the phone, just took it out of my pocket the other day and noticed a c shaped crack on the camera lens hole. I took half a day off of work and went to the Apple store to only be told they won’t stand behind the product. In my oppionion this is a manufacturer defect. I’ve had 5 iPhones in the past and have never damaged one. If Apple will not make this right it will be my last Apple product for me and my family.

I have the same problem. Few weeks after my purchase I coincidentally found that C shaped crack near the microphone hole. If I had dropped it pretty badly I would remember. Everyday use shouldn't have caused such a crack. But the crack didn't affect the usability of the phone.

Horrible thing is, yesterday my iphone went into an endless cycle of rebooting. When trying recovery mode, I got the 4013 error.

When I took it to the Genius, he mentioned that the 4013 was caused by a hardware problem and that it is covered under the 1 year warranty.

BUT, when he saw the C shaped crack on the lens cover, he stated that because of that, they will need to charge 549 USD to fix it....

It's pretty funny because on the invoice it says $0 for 4013 error repair, but $549 for back glass repair.

Now I understand how the whole 1 year warranty scheme works.. they charge you for a problem that actually doesn't need to be addressed but state somehow it "must" be fixed order to fix another problem.

Pretty upset but at the same time relieved. I was planning to switch everything to apple (pc->macbook, tablet->ipad, bluetooth earphones -> airdrops).

Everything that Louis Rossmann said about Apple is now making sense..

No wonder so many people recently have been switching back to PC/windows/Android.

This is very similar to how mine looked when it first happened with the fine almost hairline cracks coming from the microphone.

I’m wondering if there could be a small cavity of some sort below this part of the lense and combined with the microphone hole it creates a weak point?

For every person that posts on here I bet there are many more out there with the same problem.

It’s very disappointing that Apple refuse to acknowledge this problem and would rather blame their loyal users for mistreating the phones, even when there is plenty of evidence to show otherwise
