Trackpad selecting when scrolling MBA mid 2011 Sierra 10.12.6

Hello,

I've seen this issue reported since 2008 yet don't see any resolution. My MBA recently (maybe a couple of months) started doing this. It happens when I scroll quickly up and down on for example, Safari. Then the scrolling starts to select. I have tapping turned off and have tried resetting the PRAM (restart with Option Command RP), and also turning tapping on and off again, and a few other things but this continues to happen.

It is very annoying and even will try to drag around my icons, folder, etc. if I move the pointer around.

Any help from Apple people or is this just a Sierra bug that will never be fixed?

MacBook Air (13-INCH, MID 2011), Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Try a SMC reset. The article covers when this is required, but doing this will not affect anything.

Reset SMC

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. Please post back on whether or not this worked. Also try the Safe Mode. Please post back on whether or not this worked.

Safe Mode - About

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.
