Apple security update 2018-002 10.13.6 fails on Mac Pro

Hi,

Just tried to update my Mac Pro late 2013 with the newly released Apple security update 2018-002 10.13.6, both via the Mac App Store and by downloading it directly from Apple. The problem I'm having is that just after the restart the screen goes black and then nothing happens. I have tried several times now but the update doesn't start after the restart.

Anyone else having this issue?

/Johnny

That's where I'm from... a small village outside of Blarney, Cork 🙂 Hey... it's a small we live in these days for sure.

I'm still too nervous to try the Terminal fix as I have a MacPro 12 Core (Mid 2010) maybe it will behave differently on my machine to yours... too much to loose... so I will wait and see if Apple issue a fix... or wait for their Senior Tech Engineer to review the Terminal fix on Monday to see if he recommends it can be rescuable if it all goes "tits up" 🙂

Thanks again... 🙂

So.... if I download macOS Mojave and when it starts the install process and says that I need to restart to install a new firmware update... I could open terminal and force my computer to do a shutdown or restart and stop that continuous blank black screen hanging that I have been seeing for this past week... this Terminal code would override that and in effect force my machine to shutdown or restart...?

What part of Cork is your family from..? the City... or outskirts...? nearby towns and villages...?

BTW... my name is Anthony... nice to meet you ??????? 🙂

I think you all should wait for "App Store" to indicate "updates are available" rather than seeking out updates and attempting to use them. They might not apply to your hardware.

And yes updates can "freeze" while rebooting (wait overnight before deciding it's frozen) - they should complete normally after a reset button is pressed.

other than that, you might need to factory refresh and do the update while things are "fresh" (without all your old apps and hacks installed it may complete as expected)

You can check your LOGS to see what went wrong. Post them here so others can see the report and comment or fix it for you.

Hi Richard.... you are very good to come back to me with a reply so quickly.... I know Courtmacsherry... that's more West Cork... a beautiful part of Cork.. famous for Clonakilty and Bandon... 🙂

My problem is currently and for the past week or more since I tried to install that Security Update 2019-002, my computer will not shut down if I tell it to from the menu.. or, if during the installation process I need to shut down... the computer just hangs and hangs and hangs... blank black screen... the only way I can get it to shut down is to hold the Power OFF button and wait for it to shut down... to get it to come back on I then wait and press the Power On button...

I'm 100% macOS Mojave compatible... at this stage, I want to just leave High Sierra after all the trouble that the Security Update 2019-002 caused me... I downloaded macOS Mojave, but part of the installation upgrade process... the installer asks you to shut down your computer to install a Firmware update... my computer will not shut down... so I can't get to macOS Mojave... I was hoping your Terminal hack might allow me to force start that Firmware installation process.

Does that make sense...?

Hi again Richard...

Can you take a screenshot of your Terminal instructions... the corrected ones you supplied and circle where I need to take out the extra space in the word "framework", I'm unfamiliar with this type of code... so not sure where I need to edit..?

If you don't have time right now, I fully understand... no issue, maybe sometime some time over the weekend... it would be a great help.

Installing on an older Mac Mini (but within range). Very slow install after 2nd reboot; at 3rd reboot, the screen is still black 10 minutes later; the fan is running and the CPU is getting hot, but no sign of anything else. I don't know how long to wait before forcing a reboot (and fear that a hard reboot at this point may leave me with a dysfunctional machine).

What every happened to Apple QC?

How do I get my logs so that I can post them here for you guys to review and assist..?

Ah! I just re-installed a friend's system - had an older installer of El Capitan kicking around and did it and it ended up installing ALL the invisible folders visibly - that is, at root level, I could see more than just Applications, Library, System and Users. By the final install and update of El Cap, I HAD taken the Safari 12 update and had that EXACT same folder in the system.

Definitely a problem with the Safari update as I got it and the root level folders visible at the end of it all (Thankfully friend with computer never accesses the root of his drive so it's not going to be an issue.)

Nov 11, 2018 2:00 AM in response to chelidon

Hi Chelidon....

So the exact same things were happening for you... constant hanging blank black screen... where my cursor would jump from the middle of the screen or wherever I would have last placed it and move to the top left-hand corner of the screen and just hang there.... the longest I left it was 3 hours.

Also.... after attempting the Security Update 2018-002 I could never shut down my MacPro normally either on the scheduled Energy Saver settings or my the using the Finder/File/Shutdown menu... the only thing that works is a hard press Power OFF.... ? Did that happen for you..?

Also... any attempt to re-install the HIgh Sierra macOS or upgrade to the new macOS Mojave where halted also... as they required a shutdown to begin the install process and that again was not possible. Did that happen for you..?

If you experienced all of the above and your Terminal commands helped then I would really consider your option.... it's just that I never ever really use Terminal for anything... so I'm just very nervous to try it.... unless I know for sure it fixed my exact same issue for other people, which it looks like it has for you.

Thank you again Chelidon for all your help and assistance with this issue... 🙂

Nov 13, 2018 12:09 PM in response to Parky50

I totally agree Parky50, but no one is listening... I have been chasing a solution to this since last week and nothing.... I'm stuck with a MacPro 12 Core (Mid 2010) that cannot now be shutdown by the OS... only a hard force Power OFF... a total disaster... I purchased a new Sapphaire PULSE RX580 which I have installed in my MacPro... working perfectly... except I can't update to macOS Mojave either as first my computer needs a new Firmware update and to do that my MacPro must shutdown and restart and it's unable to do so over this totally crappy Apple Security Update 2018-002... I have an Apple Tech Support guy assisting me with this issue... well hopefully he can... I will report back if I get any updates or solutions.
