Apple security update 2018-002 10.13.6 fails on Mac Pro

Hi,

Just tried to update my Mac Pro late 2013 with the newly released Apple security update 2018-002 10.13.6, both via the Mac App Store and by downloading it directly from Apple. The problem I'm having is that just after the restart the screen goes black and then nothing happens. I have tried several times now but the update doesn't start after the restart.

Anyone else having this issue?

/Johnny

I’m a little surprised too that Apple has not addressed this more expediently. Clearly there’s a widespread issue that needs to be addresse. In my 25+ years on Mac computers I’ve never had some like this happen to me. I too had to restore from Time Machine overnight to get back to work. I was an Apple trainer for a few years and always told people to backup to TM before doing any updates. I think of all the times we helped trainees update from the App Store without incident. This is quite unusual so you think they’d be quick to fix it.

Hi chelidon....

That Apple Support Tech hasn't returned any of my calls or voice messages so I have decided to take the plunge and try the Terminal Code fix. You have been so helpful and supportive by getting back to me... but before I take the plunge I just want to ask a few last questions, here's the Terminal TO DO list below:-

1. rm -rf ~/Library/Caches/*

2. sudo /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.fra mework/Support/lsregister -kill -seed -lint -r -f -v -dump -domain local -domain system -domain user -domain network

3. killall Dock

4. sudo mdutil -E /

5. Reboot

6. sudo softwareupdate -i -a --verbose

7. Reboot when prompted

So, do I enter the code I see in item 1 (copy 'n' paste) from the list, then enter the code for number 2, followed by 3 and 4. Will my computer automatically Reboot as list in item 4 or do I need to type that next ?

Wif my computer reboots as listed in item 4, I then go to Terminal again and copy 'n' paste the code in Item 5 and Reboot when prompted in Item 7. I have had issues doing any Reboots... but hopefully the first phase of code (Items 1 - 5) resolve this and the rest is straightforward.

Would my comments and assessment of the process above be correct?

Thank you again for all your help and assistance with this issue. I hope not to bother you again with this issue as I hope this gets me to macOS Mojave asap.

Also Chelidon.... I recently upgraded to my new Sapphire PULSE RX580 graphics card to bypass that whole Security Update issue and just upgrade to macOS Mojave... and even though that wasn't possible due to the hanging issue/force restart with Power button... it's been performing superbly... will I need to put back in my old Graphics Card with Boot Screen to perform your Terminal fixes... or can I leave it as it is...?

Hello again chelidon...

I just wanted to thank you again for all your help with my issue. This morning I decided to take the plunge and go for it in relation to using your Terminal code fix to resolve my screen hanging and force Power Off issues... and it worked perfectly... a few scary running code moments that freaked me out... but within a few mins I was back to HIgh Sierra and inside the App Store I could visibly see that the Security Update had been indeed applied. So thank you so so so much.

I then decided as things were going well to go and install macOS Mojave... all looked good as I was able to install the Firmware Update successfully.... but then as the more main part of the install started to progress I repeatedly encountered a "macOS Installation resources not available" error... I performed a PR RAM reset plus a Disk First Aid plus switched over to a guest account where the macOS Mojave update started to install successfully... after about 45 mins... a few scary black screens, white screens and hanging progress bars up came macOS Mojave and no issues since.

It's like having a new computer... this upgrade to the Sapphire PULSE RX580 Graphics Card plus the new macOS Mojave enhancements makes my vintage MacPro 12 Core (Mid 2010) with 64GB RAM and 500GB SSD, feel like a 2018 machine all over again. Actually, it still feels way faster than my recent purchase of a maxed out MacBook Pro 2017 with Touchbar and 16GB RAM.

I think I will squeeze another 1-2 years out of this now until the new offering of the MacPro 2019 with Standalone Monitor finally arrives.

Thank you again chelidon... 🙂

I also had a problem with this update. On boot the system said "The macOS installation couldn't be completed"

I restarted multiple times and it just kept coming back to that, it wasn't until I went to the startup disk utility and set it back to my hard drive that I got back into my system.

Luckily I didn't have to restore from time machine, but now I'm worried about doing this update.

Thanks for the tip. I also am trying to install the latest update which froze my iMac Pro (late 2014). Upon the initial attempt I ended up with a log screen which told me a lot of nothing, since I don't know how to read it. I rebooted twice in SAFE mode to end up with a frozen bar in the log-in window. How long must one wait until one reboots using the POWER button. The mouse and keyboard are inaccessible, probably because they are Bluetooth driven, even though I have them hard wired to the computer at the moment. Thanks again.

I had a similar issue (posted earlier in the thread). No working solution found so far.

First time I tried installation failed. Showed the logs on boot up and after changing the start up disk from installer to normal it booted fine and showed the update still in ap store.

Tried again and it updated fine and logged back into OS X and App Store showed update as successful. Shut down and then on reboot the loading bar just gets stuck half way and then shows a no entry sign. Had to do a time machine restore.

Not experience the issue with shutdown / reboot that had been mentioned a fair bit in this thread.

Holding off trying to do the update again until I find someone who has had some success to this type of issue

This update tripped me up too (iMac 2017 5K). All appeared fine until a re-boot the following day, iMac wouldn't boot, stuck at Installer screen, I eventually managed to get the iMac to boot by selecting the 'Macintosh HD' from the utilities menu. Like others I was left with the 'MacOS Install' folder at the root level. However, everything appeared to be working OK, I didn't attempt to reinstall the 2018-002 update. I then noticed that iStats was reporting higher GPU and CPU temperatures than what I would usually expect to see for my typical use, especially after waking the Screensaver or coming of out of sleep. I checked Activity Monitor and there were no processes running to explain the high temps.

I then decided to do a Time Machine restore (pre 2018-002) and that seemed to go to plan, however the high GPU and CPU temperatures started again yesterday (nothing unusual in Activity Monitor).

I'm thinking a PRAM and SMC reset may be in order?

So, I've continually waited to apply this update. I have a 2017 MacBook Air. With all the issues out there, it just seems like the best course is to wait. Oddly, if Apple felt the update had a bug, I feel like it's been plenty of time. For Security Updates, I always download the update manually and run. I'm sure this is only affecting a small number of users, but it seems this is a "larger" "small" number of users than I've seen in some time. I realize this is a user to user forum, but one would hope Apple would occasionally notice threads affecting larger numbers of people.
