Ipad Pro 2018 11" - Screen Protector Issue

So here's a question that has left me baffled. I have a new 11" Ipad Pro and all good.


However, after applying a Face ID friendly glass screen protector, (I've tried about 5 different brands) in certain lighting conditions the touch screen does not respond. If I then put my hand over the sensors it responds perfectly.


Just to add even if I only stick a screen protecor on half of the ipad completely avoiding the sensors the same issue happens when trying to work on the protector side but not on the part of the screen that remains uncovered.


Without the screen protector on all works perfectly. Its pretty annoying though because it happens a lot.


If anyone can explain or fix this I'd be very grateful. I note on a lot of Amazon reviews that people complain that screen protectors impact sensitivity of the screen but I wonder if they have the same problem as me with the sensors??


I also spoke with Apple support and they had no idea what could be causing it.

Someone mentioned replacing a glass screen protector with a thin film screen protector does not affect the touch sensitivity of the 2018 iPad Pro models.

This is a growing, known issue.

There is something going on with the new iPad Pros using glass screen protectors that sffects touch sensitivity.

Thin film plastic screen protectors are not causing these 3rd gen iPad Pro touch issues.

There is something with the glass screen protectors that is causing interference with the touch interface of the new 3rd gen iPad Pro models.

Removing the glass screen protector returns normal touch response to the 3rd gen iPad Pro.

You notice correctly that Apple does not participate on this forum. This is a strictly user to user only forum. The only Apple people here are moderators who check posts to ensure they are not in violation of the terms of use we all agreed to when we joined the forum. And there are community specialists, who provide stock answers to user problems, which have gone unanswered for 24 hours. They never get involved in any thread which asks "why doesn't Apple" type questions.


Apple has a storied history of not acknowledging issues, either hardware or software. That doesn't mean they aren't working on an issue. They just don't publicly state what they are working on. I'm sure enough people have provided feedback to Apple about touch sensitivity, that they are likely checking into this. But this one is tricky. Not everyone has touch issues on iPad Pro. I have two 2018 iPad Pro 11 and neither has any touch issues at all.


I have not, nor will I put a screen protector on either of our iPad Pro 11's. I refuse to use something like Paperlike, which definitely diminishes the stunning HD clarity these iPad's deliver. Apple doesn't sell one, nor do they evidently even recommend one for iPad.

Ordered this off Amazon UK for my iPad Pro 2018 11" for £9.99 for 2 laminated protectors. Fitted it on 13.03.19 and no problems with Face ID or the touch interface, perfectly normal touch response and gestures. The Oleapholic coating is very good too and not a fingerprint magnet anymore. Don't have an Apple pencil so unable to comment on how that works with the device.

Similar problem with Zagg glass+ I just received. No response if the iPad Pro 11" is lying on a surface or in a tablet stand. But, if I touch the metal frame with the tip of one finger it is back to normal. Same problem in an OtterBox Symmetry 360 case. As long as you hold the iPad with one hand (even though no flesh is touching metal) it works OK. I don't have an Apple Pencil so I don't know if that is affected,

I have already "calmly" contacted Apple via the link. I was just posting a general comment about the Zagg glass+ screen protector which is tempered glass. The Zagg screen protector hasn't been mentioned in this thread. I also opened a case with Zagg.


This is not an Apple problem nor an OtterBox problem. I don't expect for Apple to solve this problem. Apple neither manufactures nor sells the Zagg products. Apple sells only Belkin iPhone screen protectors which can be installed in the Apple Store.


I have never seen a screen protector on an iPad or iPhone in an Apple Store.


I know how to solve the problem: Either take off the Zagg screen protector or hold the iPad in my hand. I usually hold the iPad in my left hand and poke at it with my right index finger.

My solution is simple. While I usually prefer to have a good screen protector on all my iDevices, I will be protector-less on my iPad Pro until someone creates one that doesn't adversely affect touch or Apple Pencil Use. Best Buy no longer sells any. Apple doesn't sell one. And reading through the reviews on Amazon, just about every screen protector has reviews saying they don't work. While film ones do seem to have better reviews, I just don't like how film looks on the screen.

What is a "Supcase"? But it doesn't surprise me if the screen protector is part of the case and not adhered directly to the screen. I tried using OtterBox Defender iPhone and Samsung Galaxy phone cases with their built in plastic screen protectors. Same problem. Plus dirt would get caught between the screen and screen protector. I had to cut out the plastic one with an Xacto blade and apply a glass one directly to the screen. You can try removing the plastic screen protector.


The problem seems to be a capacitive dielectric one. The capacitive touch of the "Liquid Retina" screen in the iPad Pro 11 is affected by a glass protector. It now needs both of my hands to provide enough capacitance to register a "touch"‚ my left hand to hold the iPad (with or without a case) and my right index finger to poke and prod the screen.


And I am having a devil of a time typing this. Half the key strokes aren't recognized or the adjacent letter is entered. I was holding the iPad from the back of the case. If I peel the left side of the case back slightly and touch the iPad's metal frame with my thumb it is much better.
