Ipad Pro 2018 11" - Screen Protector Issue

So here's a question that has left me baffled. I have a new 11" Ipad Pro and all good.

However, after applying a Face ID friendly glass screen protector, (I've tried about 5 different brands) in certain lighting conditions the touch screen does not respond. If I then put my hand over the sensors it responds perfectly.

Just to add even if I only stick a screen protecor on half of the ipad completely avoiding the sensors the same issue happens when trying to work on the protector side but not on the part of the screen that remains uncovered.

Without the screen protector on all works perfectly. Its pretty annoying though because it happens a lot.

If anyone can explain or fix this I'd be very grateful. I note on a lot of Amazon reviews that people complain that screen protectors impact sensitivity of the screen but I wonder if they have the same problem as me with the sensors??

I also spoke with Apple support and they had no idea what could be causing it.

I found one of the other posts on this, but not the larger post.

BTW,

This 2018 iPad Pro touch response issue does not happen with thin, plastic film screen protectors.

ONLY glass screen protectors are affecting the touch sensitivity of the 2018 iPad Pro models.

Someone mentioned replacing a glass screen protector with a thin film screen protector does not affect the touch sensitivity of the 2018 iPad Pro models.

Well thank god I found this thread because I also am having this problem. I've tried multiple branded screen protectors and this issue keeps coming back to haunt me. I even just bought the brand new Otterbox Defender and still have the problem. BUT... if I touch the bare frame of the iPad boom, problem disappears. I am thinking this is a static electricity buildup problem. When you touch the frame you effectively ground out the iPad and it works. I don't know what to do... it's so dumb. APPLE PLEASE FIX THIS ISSUE OR RECALL THESE IPADS AFTER YOU HAVE FIXED THEM. I guess for now I will just have to guard the screen with my life.

Shouting (writing in all caps) telling Apple to fix this, won't make any difference. This is a user to user only forum. The only people on the Apple side who read these posts are forum hosts who read posts to ensure they don't violate the terms of use.

If you want to provide feedback to Apple, use the link below. I'm sure they're well aware the new Pro's don't play well with screen protectors. This is likely why they don't sell any. Even Best Buy doesn't anymore. So, I really doubt Apple is going to change anything. There's no way to release a software update to change the properties of the screen and they're not going to recall or replace them as they never said they would work with a screen protector to begin with.

Did you have an Apple Pencil connected to it originally? My buddy’s was doing the same exact thing and needless to say after several restores we both discovered that once you have an Apple Pencil connected to it, it changes the dynamics and feedback of the screen so just go to settings general reset settings and that should set the iPad to the defaults.

I had two Belkin film screen protectors for the iPad 9.7. I just put one on the iPad Pro 11". I also have a Tech Armor PET film screen protector for the Galaxy S2 10.5 that I might try.

The Belkin works with no problems other than it is too small, doesn't have a cut out for the front camera/FaceID gizmo, and has a hole for the home button at the bottom. It isnt as smooth feeling as the glass one.

There was no problem with the Face ID with the Zagg Glass+ and the instructions that came with it said to re-calibrate Face ID after installing it.

Take the screen protector off and return it to Zagg for refund. There are loads of comments that Glass screen protectors simply don't play well with the new Liquid Retina Display on the new Pro models. Apple doesn't even sell one. Best Buy only sells one and the reviews aren't very good. Until someone makes one that doesn't interfere with Apple Pencil or touch, my 2018 Pro 11 will NOT have a screen protector.

You need to re-calibrate FaceID after you put on the Zagg screen protector if you set it up before with no Zagg screen protector. The Zagg covers the non-essential sensors but the other two important ones are exposed. FaceID worked just fine with the Zagg Glass+ on my 11". However this won't solve the touch sensitivity issues. Both the 11" and 12.9" 2018 iPad Pros have issues with glass screen protectors.

I had unused Belkin and Tech Armor ones from an iPad 9.7 and a Samsung 10.5 tablet and tried them and there were no apparent issues with touch sensitivity. However, the plastic ones are not as smooth as a glass one and they love finger prints.

Apple does not sell screen protectors for any iPad but has plastic film and glass ones for the iPhones. Must be something there.

In addition, for those who own Apple Pencil for the new Pro models, they don't work well with ANY glass protector, unless for some odd reason, you are physically touching the back of the iPad. If one were to want to use the pencil with the iPad laying flat on a surface, the pencil functions poorly. Just another reason Apple doesn't sell one for the new iPad models and I won't put one on either of our Pro 11's.

I found that touch sensitivity was OK with the Zagg Glass+ with the iPad 11" as long as: 1) I had the iPad in my left hand in its OtterBox Symmetry 360 case and used my right hand to prod and probe it; or 2) had it on a desk top in the case and put a finger anywhere around the edge on the case; or 3) with no case in my hand; or 4) laying on a desk top or tablet stand with no case and touched one finger anywhere on the metal frame.

I believe the problem is with the dielectric constants of various types of glass. They are generally higher than that for many plastics. Do a search on Google for "capacitive". A nice Wikipedia explanation will popup.

With a glass screen protector there isn't sufficient capacitance of a just finger tip. You need the rest of your body to provide enough capacitance to make the capacitive touch work.

I imagine Apple didn't try screen protectors during development.

I have exactly the same issues and even puting the hand over the sensors, now I know it’s not me.

I’ve changed the protectors 3 times and nothing, I’m getting a new replacement from Zagg to see, for me is the thickness.

It’s very annoyineg, specially when this item is so exprensive that needs protection... I hope someone comes out with something new and better...

I do have the new ipencil and it works fine with the screen protector. My only issue is the face id doesn’t work any more. I contacted Zagg about this and they are aware of the issue. I was told they are working on a new version of glass protector that will resolve this issue. It should be available by the end of the month. I can replace the one I just got with the new version free of charge and shipping waived. I will post if the new version works with face id.

IF and when Zagg actually releases a screen protector which does not in any way, shape or form alter touch for either finger or Apple Pencil, I'll consider buying one. Until then, all the workarounds people have posted make it a no go for me.

The reality is Apple has not emphasized screen protectors on iPad. Most people don't carry their iPad in their pocket or purse. And I'd wager that most people put them in a case to protect front and back when not in use or when carried. The screen itself is extremely durable and scratch resistant. One of my iPad's now long sold, after 3 years of daily use, without a screen protector had absolutely no scratches on it.

I'm actually more seriously looking at PaperLike protectors. The Apple Pencil on glass doesn't feel natural. PaperLike film supposedly doesn't adversely affect use and makes using the Pencil feel like writing on paper. That would be nice, IMHO.

I have this exact same situation... my Pencil works fine on my ZAGG glass for my iPadPro 2018 11” but Face ID is broken and does not work in any situation. My iPadPro consistently tells me that the “Face ID Camera is Covered.” I am very happy to hear ZAGG is working on a new version that will work with Face ID and the Pencil as it does with no glass protector installed. Thanks for the update on this.
