My HomePod keeps asking me for Apple ID password
Almost daily, my HomePod keeps asking me to sign into my Apple ID account. I've tried changing my Apple ID password and resetting the HomePod. I have 2 home pods and it happens on both.

You might also try signing out of your Apple ID and back in on the iOS device you set it up with
Go to Settings > [your name] > View Apple ID - sign out, then sign back in
if you're using Apple Music:
Turn on iCloud Music Library with Apple Music
There was an update that did coincide with this, so hopefully a fix is in for the next regular update. We definitely won't see a fix before the next scheduled update, though, I fear.
One other problem that has become almost more annoying: The HomePod is much less responsive. Perhaps they were trying to keep it from responding by accident, but it has still done that once and, meanwhile, they ignore me at least half the time, which never used to happen. The other day it took four tries, at which point I was loudly speaking (yelling, really) directly at the HomePod.
These problems are unreal. And don't get me started with all the other glitches throughout the ecosystem, including apps, that we are somehow just supposed to live with as they limp along for years. I don't get it.
If they’re not responsive to touch, you can change that in settings.
Here’s how:
Use Touch Accommodations on HomePod

Not much else we can think of to try for the signing out issue, other than tips posted in this thread. (things that may work for one person and not another, so don’t go by someone posting “didn’t work”)
Hey, I actually did not mean a problem with touching the HomePod, that works fine. I was referring to what somebody else mentioned earlier that when you are prompted to go back into the Home App and try to reenter the AppleID password in settings for the specific HomePod sometimes the "sign in" in red does not respond to touching it in the iPhone and you have to wait for it to Unfreeze and then let you enter the password. It is a weird behavior, not all the time, on top of the annoyance of having to reenter the password every few days in each of the HomePods. Cheers.
Speaking of which here's another issue I'm noticing these last few days: When it's not ignoring me altogether, HomePod looks as if it heard me and is ready for input but, just as I'm really getting the command out, the light on top goes out and it's all for naught. This happens with multiple HomePods and with no rhyme or reason. Later it will be fine again.
Also, one HomePod in particular can't find any of my playlists. That one I will probably log out of and back in again and, if it still doesn't work, reset and start from scratch.
But, seriously, these were brilliant up until the last update. I never had problems other than the occasional misinterpretation or the HomePod thinking I'd said "Hey, Siri" when I hadn't. I'd much rather go back to those little annoyances, because the current issues are genuine showstoppers.
I feel you 100%, except I can't see much hope in switching to Google, and my privacy is important enough that I prefer to avoid their platform, so I am sort of trapped here. As much as I don't want my AAPL shares to plummet again, I almost think Apple is at its best when it is an underdog, so maybe if they shoot themselves in the foot enough and are forced to shuffle things around and refocus, that will bring back some semblance of what we used to be passionate about. Until then, I fear I am going to stop being the early adopter who buys everything new on the first day (2016 MBP, HomePod, AirPods, every phone for the last few years, etc.,) and get much, much more conservative about applying updates. I really don't want to have to monitor this crap so that I know when it's safe, but I can't let it go on autopilot anymore. Once these things stabilize again, I'm turning auto-updates off for everything.
Agreed 100%. I too have a 2016 MBP, the new AirPods x 2 pair, 6 HomePods, and on and on. They also removed my last post because they censor everything on this site. If it goes against making them look good. It doesn't stop people from talking and is primarily why I post on alternative sites. I'm very disappointed in how they operate and mask issues.
The constant logging in of IDs, shoddy 12.2 capability on HomePods and others, and I wish there was a way to revert the software back on HomePod like you can a Timecapsule, but there simply is not. Early adopters often end up being beta testers and I can't afford that kinda gas any longer. Might work for them, but it doesn't work for my household any more going forward.
Same problem here.. We have 4 HomePods in my house and they all do the same thing.. "It Just Works" was a phrase that was accurate many years ago.. In 2019, Apple is becoming the Windows 95 Microsoft..
Their support doesn’t reach back out now and is a bit of an issue when your own support team ignore the customer. Censoring posts and not calling them back are frustrating. But yes, MS is making great strides and changes in how they do things. That’s what happens when you have leadership actually heading your company.
I too am experiencing this issue. Yesterday, I could shuffle all of my music on the HomePods via Siri. Now when I ask Siri, she says there's an issue with my account and I need to resolve it in the home app.
This happens ALL THE TIME. For the past several months I've had to sign back into the HomePods on a regular basis. Usually every few days.
Removing and adding them again does not resolve the issue. Apple's "recommended fix" above does not resolve the issue. It always happens regardless of the troubleshooting I do.
Additionally, I cannot stream music from my iMac Pro to the HomePods via iTunes. I've never been able to get it to work.
Like some others have said before, when they work they are awesome. However, they usually don't work. I have to continually sign back into my iTunes account in the Home app to get them to work, and I've never been able to stream music to them from my iMac Pro.
I have two of them as a stereo pair, and I am coming to the conclusion that these are some of the worst products produced by Apple (and this is coming from a guy who still has his Apple ][+ from 1981).
They need a serious firmware update or something. I am about to sell them and go back to the THX-certified speakers I have connected to my iMac Pro. It's very disappointing.
That’s interesting. Streaming from my iPhone or other device using AirPlay 2 is my default fallback when the HomePod ***** the bed as a standalone speaker.
I maintain that the hardware is excellent, but the current version of the software should have been quietly rolled back by Apple as soon as it was clear there was an issue. And the fact that there isn’t a supplemental patch to fix it before they bundle that fix in a regular update says volumes for their concern about the consumer experience on the one product most in need of their commitment to quality, given that this will make or break the HomePod as a part of the permanent lineup.
I have a feeling that the HomePod is an end-of-life device.
After unplugging both HomePods just now and trying to shuffle my music, the HomePods still cannot do it because they are "updated my iTunes library" or some other messaging like that. So I still cannot play music.
There is a very high probability that these HomePods are going to be on eBay very soon.
Very, very disappointed.
12.3 seemed better, initially, but then this morning I noticed that I had to sign into my account on three of my HomePods again, so that’s still there. Hard to say so soon after the update whether it’s as severe as it was (I was having to do this multiple times per day per home but previously). Siri seems to respond better and not to stop listening while I’m in the middle of making a command, but again, early days. If anything, they might be too sensitive. I commanded a HomePod to play and the playback started upstairs. Also, I still had problems playing a Playlist (Siri said it didn’t exist). Renaming it didn’t help before 12.3 (babysongs to baby songs), but when I renamed it to my baby’s name it started working again.
I’d really like to have to avoid blowing out all my settings and starting over.
I had a problem with playlists name earlier and I think it had to do with Apple Music having playlists with the same name. Before I had Apple Music I had no problem with the names. I had to rename a few of my playlist to something they would not have like my name etc and that fixed the issue immediately lol.
Updated to 12.3, logged out of and then back into my iTunes account. Now Siri is telling me there's nothing in my music library. I have over 13K songs and an Apple Music subscription.
Yeah, these things are headed for eBay.
And I am not about to delete my Home in the Home.app. I have 20-30 devices in there, and this is the only one that doesn't work. Ironic that Apple's own stuff doesn't work.
Time to sell them at a loss and go back to using speakers plugged into the headphone jack of my iMac Pro.
Incredibly disappointed.
Well if selling them off is better than a full on deletion of your home I get that. My house hold has lost all confidence in Apple software and Apple support going forward. It’s an absolute joke.
Good thing Timmeh is going to focus on services because troubleshooting their own hardware appears to be beyond their capability and any time I’ve ever called Apple and talked to senior support their reps never call me back and follow up on the issues. Word of mouth is a powerful thing and influences purchasing power.
Iphone and and other sales within Apple are down..... let’s blame it on a mature smartphone market says Tim.... 😂
