Samsung Portable SSD T5 not recgonized on Macbook

Yesterday I bought a Samsung Portable SSD T5 for my Macbook. At first everything was working fine and I uploaded all of my files and then I made the mistake of updating the SamsungPortableSSD software. Now every time I plug in the hard drive the software launches and says "No Samsung Portable SSD is connected." I've plugged the hard drive into other computers (a windows pc) and it works fine. It's just on my mac that it isn't registering. I think it's because of the updated software but I'm not 100% sure. It was working fine before I updated it.

I've also tried erasing the drive on my mac but it says it isn't compatible and can't erase. I also can't seem to uninstall the SamsungPortableSSD software (and then just re-downloading it), and I feel like that would be a viable solution, just can't seem to work it out.

If anyone knows anything I could possibly do to fix this, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you :)

MacBook, macOS 10.14

Absolutely! Here's what I did. In a Finder window, click "go" in the toolbar and then "go to folder" and type in this -> "~/Library/Application/Support/PortableSSD" (or just copy and paste!). From there, there should be something labelled either "CleanupAll.scpt" or CleanupPSSD.scpt" that's the code you need to run. Hope this helps! It took quite a bit of scouting for me to find this solution, so let me know if you need any other help. My drive now works perfectly. Hope it works for you, too! :)

Ok so the solution to this as of right now is to completely uninstall the portableSSD software then install the older version of the software version 1.6.2. Only version 1.6.2 will work right now.

The issue is that in the newest version of OS in Mojave, apple as created stricter protocols for 3rd party software. All software will need to have all of there kernel files approved by apple prior. (something like that anyways, I'm not a programmer.)

There is plenty of internet gossip about this new security change by apple, they gave notice to companies but not all companies have implemented it yet. So I'm sure at a later date there will be a SSD software that is updated that works with Mojave, but for now you need to get an install copy of PortableSSD v 1.6.2. The only way you can get it is by emailing Samsung support here: samsungmemory@hanaro.eu

They got back to me pretty quick, I sent the email in the evening and got a copy from them the next morning. As soon as I installed it, it worked immediately.

You can fully uninstall the ssd software by doing the following these steps:

  • Open finder, in the go dropdown on the top left select "Go to folder..."
  • paste in the following, ~Library/application support/portableSSD (if this doesn't find the file directory, try ~Library/application support/samsungportablessd)
  • in the folder you will see a few different files, double click to open the CleanAll.scpt (make sure you have admin privileges)
  • Click the 'play' symbol on the top left of the window. This will erase all SSD software buried within the library systems and uninstall the software. (note: I had errors here, mainly files that aren't found. From my understanding, these are the missing kernel files that are causing it not to work. don't worry though, even with errors the soft ware will uninstall.)
  • Now the software is uninstalled, delete any left over shortcuts and empty your trash.

Good luck and I know how you feel!

Hi, all. Great reading this. Gives me hope that I may be able to restore my photography for the last year.

The issue I’m having is

  1. the ssd software folder is nowhere to be found on my computer. There is no application— as I have deleted it— and there is no cleanupscript in sight.
  2. When I attempt to install an older version, the Mac tells me that there is already a newer version and I must uninstall it before attempting to install the older version.... but the newer version does not exist...
  3. My T5 SSD mounts as T5_Setup, launches the SSDSoftware, and continues to say “disconnected”
  4. The T5 (mounted are T5_Setup) contains only three files now— the SSDSoftware application, a .exe installer for windows, and a .txt read only for android.

Any help/ideas is/are greatly appreciated. I am at a loss.

Evening Inorton44: Please see the immediately preceding post regarding a fix for this annoying issue with the Samsung T5 SSD.

Steps:

  1. First uninstall the current Samsung software on your Mac as outlined in bgray1125's postings above.
  2. bgray1125's post also has a link to the Samsung Australian download link for Activation Software 1.6 which is the software that will fix your problem. The software link for the Activation Software is also found in the Samsung India website. If you copy and paste the reference in my post into Google one of the listings will be the India site that will take you to the needed software download.
  3. DO NOT UPDATE V 1.6. Be sure not to update the software or it will undo the fix and take you right back to the initial problem of not recognizing the SSD.

Hope this helps you re-access your photos.

If you have already done the above fixes previously in old version of MacOS. You do not need to modify anything. Only make sure do not update the software. How to access hardisk if you already have done fixes before Catalina update:

  1. Connect hardsisk
  2. Open hardisk from (Desktop icon created). Execute the PortableSSD software by clicking the icon present inside the hard drive. Remember not to touch or run the existing installed version on MacBook (even the older version, though, Catalina cannot detect it).
  3. When you run first time it will complain of software incompatibility and need to install latest version.(but not complain of software update needed) Here is a trick. You do not update but you install existing old ver. which comes with SSD one. So follow the instruction as it appear on screen .....click ok/ next/ next continue etc. until it give error saying incompatibility and failed to install the software. Repeat this few times. If you already had fixed the SSD software in the previous Mac ver; by third or 4th iteration you will see in the background PortableSSD open up asking to enter password to unlock SSD.
  4. Well enter password and access the hard disk from Desktop icon again. This time you should see all your content. Good Luck!

Sorry _bbrr I am a total novice. Have the same issue as explained but don't understand what to do. Clicked on Finder and it shows my Favourites and Locations. Where do i click "go" than "go to folder" again please? Try to add to search bar "~/Library/Application/Support/PortableSSD" but that didn't do anything. Please help as really would like to make this drive work. Many thanks

It’s not the format of the SSD that is the issue. I formatted it exfat. The issue is the Samsung software. All of the removal procedures say to remove the software from the application folder but in my case the Samsung SSD folder within the application folder doesn’t exist. Because within the Samsung SSD folder is where the script is to do the uninstall. Samsung suppprt was no help

Thanks so much for letting us know how you fixed it, _bburr, and thanks to jiggamurf for the detailed description! You saved me!

It might be helpful (to the not-so-computer-savy) that when you open the script, in order to run it you need to hit the "play" button in the top of the window.

And yes, it is the Samsung software. I installed the delivered version and then it said something like "you should update or it might not run on future systems" -- knowing that I will use this on a brandnew Macbook I intend to buy soon, I updated. And that's when the trouble started. The warning should have been "don't update or it might not run on your current system!!!!"

BTW, I have Mojave and the fix worked, in spite of what others had said here (scared me a bit)...

Aug 21, 2019 12:47 AM in response to Lanny

Lanny how do you do that? I want to reformat the entire drive so I don't need the software, but it doesn't seem possible. If I connect it and don't run software, only a small launch partition (read-only, with the software) is visible. If I unlock with the software, I can format the drive but it doesn't wipe the launch partition.
