Homekit an LG smart TV 2019 not working

Hi,

From the Netherlands. I have a OLED 55C9. Airplay 2 works partly. But Homekit doesn't at all!. When scanning the QR code generated by the TV, the TV says it has been configured with Homekit. However, my Homekit app says that adding the LG OLED has failed. The tv is connected by ethernet and WiFi, the iPhone on the same wifi....With other iPhone no result either. My Apple TV in the attic functions as hub.

Some Airplay features work, others not:

MacBook Pro: ScreenMirror works, playing films from iTunes works, playing films directly from QuickTime and selecting Airplay to LG TV DOESN'T work.

iPhone: Airplay works with all features.

I already asked around on the LG forum, have reset my router, have done a factory reset of the TV, nothing works.

Anyone know a solution???

@robertapple1 OMG THANK YOU!!! That worked!

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that LG is trying to send the input names over to HomeKit, and that one of the names being too long is causing the failure. @Apple Please take note.

When the LG TV is "smart connected" to a cable/sat Set top box (please ignore "remote", its between the TV and the STB), the LG TV names the input based on the provider, which is a long name ("Baltimore Something FIOS Verizon blah blah blah blah Services Something Something").

When the LG TV is "smart connected" to the STB, Adding the LG TV to HomeKit fails ("Home couldn't connect to Accessory" or similar message)

When the LG TV is NOT "smart connected" to the STB, adding the LG TV to HomeKit succeeds just fine.

When the LG TV, after being added to HomeKit, is re-"smart connected" to the STB, the LG TV Accessory in HomeKit becomes unresponsive.

When the "Smart connected" STB input name is re-named on the LG TV to a short name (Home Dashboard -> Edit -> Rename input), and an exists in HomeKit, where previously was "Unresponsive", HomeKit accessory is now responsive.

Conclusion, long input name causes an error in the accessory update/verification process.

Solution: Rename input after its "smart connected" to a short name

A conversation with Apple helped me realise the problem. The Apple guy asked: is bluetooth (BT) on? Of course it was, but then it hit me: Airplay control works with BT. And therein lies the problem.

When I bought the TV it automatically recognised my settop-box/decoder (Ballard Rural Telephone Cooperation is how it is called on my TV; it is provided by T-Mobile Netherlands). This set-up makes it possible to use the LG Magic Remote as a universal RC to control my settop box. This feature uses BT.......

After disconnecting the LG Magic Remote from the settop box, the Homekit app on my iPhone recognised my LG TV and added it as an accessory. Succes at last. BUT, after setting up my LG Magic Remote again to control my settop box, the Homekit app didn't get a respons from the LG TV anymore.

My conclusion is, that there is a Bluetooth protocol interference at play here, that I as a user cannot fix. My opinion is that LG needs to contact Apple to streamline each others usage of BT protocols, and come up with a firmware update.

At the moment I choose in favour of using my settop box with the LG Magic Remote, as the functionality of the HomeKit controls of the TV is limited, but I would love to be able to use both.

I've had the same problem + managed to get it all working at last!

I think my problem was assuming my router didn't have seperate 2.4 / 5ghz frequencies (as I've only ever had one network show

up) but discovered an option, buried deep in the router settings, to separate the channels and disable 5ghz.

I Kicked off all devices connected connected to the 5ghz frequency

Disabled 5ghz on the router + saved the settings.

I reset the TV

Immediately tried connecting via Homekit - it failed

10 mins later, tried just screenmirroring on an MBP, it connected seamlessly.

Tried Homekit again + it then connected.

It probably a bug that all the devices need to be on the same frequency, but it worked for me

Mate, try this, it worked for me after trying literally everything :

  • Factory reset your TV, this HAS TO BE DONE, no matter how much it hurts (and trust me, it did as I spent many hours calibrating my TV...)
  • after you did that, reboot your iOS device
  • make sure you’re using the same WiFi network
  • don’t try to connect your TV via HomeKit but instead Airplay any YouTube video for example or Music
  • once this worked, use Home App and register your tv normally by using the numbers instead of the scan

Good luck

Hi Enzodima

Unfortunately I changed two things at once but I have got it working now.

i first connected my tv to my router with an Ethernet cable and then pulled the power cable out and left it 15seconds.

After rebooting both HomeKit and Airplay worked straight away. I have remove the Ethernet cable and switched back to WiFi and it is still working.

i think it was probably the power cycle that fixed this for me.

I hope this works for you too

Once your TV is connected to the set top box (STB) and before you add it to Homekit shorten the name it generated for the input on the TV to a shorter version i called mine "LG TV". I then went to the "Airplay 2 Homekit setup" on the TV and got to the screen where the homekit code is displayed on the screen. Then went to Homekit app on my phone and hit the "+" key in the upper corner and selected "Add Accessory", when the screen showed the camera I pointed it to the code on the TV screen and viola it added it to my Homekit setup.

Hope you have the same success I had.

Happy Holidays

All right guys, I found how to make it work, and trust me I tried everything !

I did what I didn’t want to do which is hard reset my TV because I spent a lot of time calibrating it to my tastes.

After resetting it, I did try to launch airplay via Tidal and it instantly recognized my device. After that I tried to add my LG Tv to HomeKit and again, it worked.

I was about to forbid my TV to join the 5ghz network but it works without doing it, so I suggest you skip this too and leave your router as it is.

it works perfectly and I am a happy man ;-)

Again thanks to all of you guys, I am fresh into this community but love it already.

All the best

Mahdi

I run iOS 13.0 on my iPhone, and the issue still exists. I firmly believe there us interference in the BT protocol of the LG Magic Remote (connected to my settle box) and Airplay, because HomeKit connection to my LG TV is lost when my settop box turns ON. When I sever the connection between the LG Magic Remote and the settop box there is no issue with HomeKit and the LG TV.

I am sceptic that iOS 13 for Homepod will solve the issue

i have bought 2 days ago an LG OLED C9 MLB

at first when i try to connect the tv HomeKit with my iPhone App did not work, because my iphone was on mobile data, then I switch the wifi on on my iphone, after a few try still not working!

What I realised was my fault because my iPhone supposed to be connected to the same wifi like the tv oled. I connected to the iphone to the same wifi like the tv was connected, then my HomeKit iphone app connected at first time when I scanned the tv barcode HomeKit

You can connect try this YouTube guide how to connect your Tv to Apple HomeKit on your iPhone or Tablet https://youtu.be/02XPy7itkz4

Hey, robertapple1.

I see that you've purchased an LG C9 55 inch Class 4K Smart OLED TV w/ AI ThinQ® (54.6'' Diag). You're trying to connect it as a Home accessory, and I'd like you to contact Apple Support for help.

Apple - Support - Product Selection — After selecting this link, type Homekit in the Search topics field and select "Help with HomeKit certified accessories". Then choose how you'd like to start the conversation.

Take care.
