ios 13 and itunes support

Does anyone what Apple plans to do regarding itunes and ios 13 support? Apple released today itunes 12.10.0.7 for Windows users which presumably has ios 13 support but there has been no update for mac users. I am running High Sierra 10.13.6

I remember last year Apple made it really complicated for Mac users because they installed ios 12 on their phones but itunes was not recognizing the phone when it was connected. Everyone had to figure out how to get things working again when Apple released a software update to get itunes to recognize ios 12. It was a big pain.

I've also been able to connect and backup my iOS 13 device in High Sierra using iTunes 12.6.5.3, which is the last version that supports app management or can restore iPod clickwheel games to an iPod classic.

The reason is pretty obvious. There will be no .ipw downloaded on iTunes, thus no full updates available after and the required constraint to modify all the iDevices one by one.

While as you are well aware of, this special version iTunes 12.6.5.3 allows to do it one for all. This is what I am intested by, so no updates on iOS 13 so far. It is really a pity this is not maintained by Apple on its new macOS.

May be the new macOS 10.15 (Catalina) does the job directly through the Finder?...

Clearly if you want the app management tools provided by iTunes 12.6.5.3 then you need to stick with that in High Sierra. The ability to update multiple devices from a single .ipsw file really isn't worth the saved bits. I've kept a working copy for testing and so I can restore iPod clickwheel games to my iPod. I'm using Catalina to explore the replacements for iTunes, Apple Arcade, and so on. You can update and sync devices using Finder in Catalina. So far it has failed to restore my classic several times while also corrupting the library on it (once was a hardware issue, but it has happened more than once). Catalina might not suit you if you're still reliant on old features that have been discarded.

What would be wonderful is to carry on using my iMac with iTunes 12.6.5.3 as a hub for all the iDevices. It would appear a lot simplier for my configuration, thus I shall keep High Sierra as it is. The collateral damage being that it will not be possible to update to iOS 13.

Then the feedback on Catalina is very promising. Would it be then identical with the new applications to keep the iMac as a hub and for all?

I'll say it again. My iOS 13 devices can be used with iTunes 12.8.2.3 under High Sierra. I don't know for certain if that build will update from iOS 12 to iOS 13 as I updated by devices over the air, but they should work with it after the fact.

If you have multiple computers, or sufficient hard drive space to create multiple partitions, you can try out Catalina on one while being able to stick to the familiar on another. I stuck a 2GB SSD in my Mac mini and have High Sierra, Mojave and Catalina as I please.

I hit this problem as well and the advice from @turingtest2 is not helpful at all.

I shouldn't have to update my barely year old Mac to an OS I'm not ready to move to just to be able to run the latest iOS on my mobile devices, this is absurd!

I can't move to Catalina because I would lose critical support of 32 bit apps and would also lose the ability to integrate my iTunes library with 3rd party apps that rely on the iTunes exported XML library file which does not function properly in Catalina.

Come on Apple, fix this crap.... why the **** are you trying to push everyone to the latest OS every month now?

Where have I suggested that anyone needs to upgrade to Catalina? My understanding has been that El Capitan and iTunes 12.8.2.3 have been the minimum versions of OS X and iTunes that support devices running iOS 13. Another thread today suggests that some users may even be able to use iOS 13 with Macs running Yosemite. The software patch that the steps I've given should trigger are a patch to iTunes to communicate with devices that it wasn't programmed for when it was originally released. For many years Apple's approach to new versions of iOS and new devices was a new build of iTunes. That changed with Mojave when iTunes was baked into the OS, and frozen for older versions of macOS/OS X. This patching method is the workaround. It should load automatically, but if it doesn't my steps should start it.

No doubt you iOS devices can be used with iTunes 12.8.2.3 under High Sierra, but what I am interested is would be to do it by iTunes 12.6.5.3 to keep local updates on the computer. As I said before, tried to move to iOS 12 to 13 directly with this version of iTunes, it does not work, while it might work over the air fro you.

Another option would be to use Catalina and its new options, but I too have some app that 32 bit only, thus I will not move to iOS 13 so far...

Wow. I spent nearly 45 minutes on the phone with Apple Support. (I have an iPhone 8 (IOS13.2) and a mid 2011 iMac running High Sierra and iTunes 12.8.2.3) My phone wouldn't show up in iTunes. The gal at Support couldn't help, and she got her supervisor who told me that my computer is so old that it no longer will work with the newest IOS, so I either had to subscribe to Apple Music or buy a newer computer. That was where they left me. Then I stumbled onto this site, and I did what Turningtest 2 said to try. After about 3 minutes of downloading and installing, my phone now shows up in iTunes!!!!

Thank you SO MUCH!!!

That is what I am wondering. Just got my wife the 8plus and don't want to upgrade her to 13 yet. I have el capitan and itunes 12.6 I think and it all works fine. Apple screwed me last year on my work computer running Yosemite. Upgraded itunes and it no longer recognized my phone and was not given software upgrade option so it would not work with phone. I just recently discovered downgrading to an older version of itunes it will see my phone again. But windows users get itunes versions that work on windows 98 and with their iphones it seems. I'm a 25+year mac user with 12 devices and this is how we get treated.

As earlier El Capitan and iTunes 12.8.2.3 are the minimum versions of OS X and iTunes that support devices running iOS 13. Windows users need Windows 7 or better and iTunes 12.10 or better. iTunes 12,6,5,3 can be used by those that really rely on app management support in iTunes. I don't believe it can actually manage an update to iOS 13, but that can be done over the air.

Big thanks tt2. 👍

The MobileDeviceUpdater path you outlined was a very easy to follow path (and cheaper!) option than that Apple had in mind! And it worked!

Issue resolved: Syncing an IPhone iOS13.1 with iTunes 12.8.2.3 via a mid-2010 iMac that’s running High Sierra 10.3.6 such that iTunes wouldn’t recognise the USB plugged in iPhone any more, and the iTunes can’t be upgraded with my iMac because the iMac can’t be upgraded to Mojave or Catalina (which was Apple’s solution to resolving the sync issue i.e. “why don’t you buy a new(er) iMac”. 🤬).

Able as a result to fully sync an IPhone 6s that had been “upgraded” to iOS13 .1 with iTunes 12.8.2.3.

Method has also worked with an iPhone 6s that had been upgraded to 13.2.3. 😊

In Finder use the menu item Go > Go to Folder..., copy the following text, paste it into the dialog box and press enter:

/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/Versions/Current/Resources

Unlock your device and connect it to USB. Double click on MobileDeviceUpdater in the folder that has opened. It should notify you of a software update. Install it and iTunes should hopefully recognize your device.
