Photos in iMessage disappeared after ios13 update

After updating to iOS 13, all photos previously sent and received through iMessage are gone. Has anyone else encountered this issue and found a solution?

I am experiencing the same: After the update to iOS 13.0, photos sent and received under iOS 12.x are not present under "info" in imessage (but they are if I scroll up through the message history). If I send or receive a photo after the update, they are present in the "info" section. Is this a known bug? Known fix?

do you have the newest iOS 14.0.2? try installing that, then restarting your phone.

if that doesnt work, then you must reach out to apple. ive been working with them since sept 1, 2020, trying to get my photos back in the "details" section of messages. this is a known issue (since sept 2019) that hasnt been fixed because not enough ppl are experiencing it. i think ppl just havent noticed it so its underreported.

if you want apple engineers to fix it, you need to contact apple. otherwise, theyre not going to waste time/money fixing it.

Hi, I’m having the same problem last year March 2019 my photos and videos etc in iMessages are grey and say zerokb and when I go in my iCloud it says my iMessage conversation are zero kb and also when I click on my iPhone storage and messages it says zero kb. Would your suggestion if the backup and reset also fix my phone? I really want all my photos in iMessage back. Please help

That sucks. I was hoping the new phones wouldn’t suffer from this issue.

Between new hardware and a new iOS, it’s too bad apple didn’t address. They do know about the issue.

Its too small/trivial for a class action, but some of us are paying for too much storage as we can’t go back and edit out some of the larger attachments. Kind of sucks.

More people need to report this. Many of us on this thread have spent hours on the phone with senior tech advisors (who have escalated the issue to engineering) with no results. I spent all of October 2019 on the phone with Apple (scheduled weekly calls, sending all my data over to Apple, letting a senior tech advisor take over my phone to try to figure it out, etc.) and the end result was "this is a known issue, engineers are aware of it, we're working on it".

I called yesterday and explained what happened on sept of 19 and I have called every few months to see if there was any updates. Senior advisor basically stated that the file gets corrupted and that they become Unretrievable... what are they telling everyone else. Also had to provide the url to this thread for them to see

Also what steps have you tried to fix this. I’ve had this issue before updating to iOS 13. Since last year March. However my photos and videos etc in iMessage don’t even app when I scroll in my messages. They are grey in the info section and when I scroll in messages they are just a blank file. I really hope we can fix this.

So I think I have a FIX!!! My phone and my wife's phone has this problem of not be able to see photos under info within imessage. When I was talking to apple support she said that for imessage to restore right you needed to plugged in to power. So for my wife's phone we got her a new iphone 11 so to set it up I did a icloud backup with here current phone that was not working right. Then just set up the new iphone 11 with manually setup but still restoring from icloud with the newest backup but always having plugged into power. Gave it all night and all was back to normal the next morning. My phone is the new 12 and it is have the problem I did about the same thing just without switching phones. Do a icloud backup (turned off find my phone but do not know if you need to do that) then reset the phone so it deletes everything on the phone. Then had the phone plugged into power and restored from that new backup. Just make sure you have the phone on wifi and power until it fully restores. It will take hours. I hope this helps someone else and if so let us know on here.

I have an interesting update... I have an old Mac that has a similar problem within the Messages application. When I click on "details" in a message thread on my Mac, the photos say downloading, but it's super glitchy. They never fully download and it's just very, very glitchy. I just updated to Catalina, and when I opened the Messages application, I was able to download every old photo in the "details" section. I was hopeful that maybe this might be a first step in fixing my problem... maybe there was an issue in my old iTunes or something? But I've toggled the iMessages on/off under iCloud in my phone to "disable and download messages" and it's been about 3 hours and it says it's downloading messages from iCloud but I don't see anything new yet. I'll update if anything changes. Ah, those few moments of hope were pretty good though...

No, however I did fix the problem. I am fortunate to still have my old phone that I have not erased. I was encountering a huge issue originally while setting up my iPhone with the wireless or wired transfer feature. My phone kept giving me “transfer not complete” error not enough storage.

I used my MacBook iTunes to backup my old phone, once that was done I restored my iPHone 12 to factory and restored from the backup I initiated from my old phone.

It is now back to normal. I feel the issue is with ICloud backup and the iOS 14 issue, until the patch is not fixedC, everyone is going to experience this problem.

PS: I spoke with 5+ reps regarding this issue.

Best of luck!
