Photos in iMessage disappeared after ios13 update
After updating to iOS 13, all photos previously sent and received through iMessage are gone. Has anyone else encountered this issue and found a solution?

Just a suggestion which you may have already tried, but on my phone if I click on the info icon at the top and scroll to the bottom it says x number of images in iCloud and there is an option to download them. Hope this helps
So, what about the issue? anybody managed to get the photos. For me it is worse, if i scroll in a conversion i see the option to download pics and videos but when click to download nothing happens. Is is true i`m talking about pics and videos send for more than 6 months, but still, would expect to be able to download them as i have i message backup-ed on icloud.
Nobody from support here that can help?
Hi,
I have been having the same issue. My friend suggested a great solution to this problem which is to just screen record the audio message. I know it is not ideal but it is a lot easier than resetting your phone or trying to find a loophole (which I spent a while doing).
I hope this helps!
Hi,
That’s great that worked for you. Do you think the steps you did will also work for me? My problem is slightly different my photos for some reason have turned grey and say zero kb and when I click on my messages in iCloud it also says zero kb but however I can see all my photos in my camera roll/ photo library. Help how can I get all my photos back to see?
Hi, would the steps you did also work for me all my photos I could see fine in iMessage on my new iPhone XS after transferring from my old phone then I reset all settings on my phone and then suddenly most of my photos and videos in iMessage turned grey and say zero kb so will what you did work and make my photos come back?
Hi my problem isn’t after the ios13 update. My photo just started to make my photos and videos in iMessages grey and say zero kb and then also some photos say click to download images in iCloud. Do you think what you did to fix the photos will work for me too? Please help
I just noticed this issue after updating to 13.6. I called Apple Support and they seemed to think this was a new issue; told me it was the amount of space I had which was completely wrong. I confirmed via screen sharing that my settings:
-iCloud backup turned on
-message settings> keep iMessages “FOREVER” and audio messages “KEEP FOREVER”
When I’d look at the details of an iMessage (“i”), it used to show me thumbnails of photos sent/received. Now it just shows “attachments” with a “download” link/button. I’ll click on the link. Shows “downloading...” Then it will revert to “Download” link. I’ll click again. Eventually, the entire “attachments” section disappears. I’m scared I’m losing all these photos!!! So I turned off iCloud backup.
iphone had >5GB space
icloud has >60GB space (I pay for 200GB)
CSRs kept saying iMessage photos are available via iCloud.com. I tried explaining that they’re not. They had me restart my phone. Same issue
Then a senior advisor had me “offload unused apps” b/c she said it was a space issue. Then she told me it was b/c I was using 134GB/200GB iCloud space and the processor has to “think” to find my photos. What a load of BS
She finally said she’d submit a ticket to engineering. Said she’d update me the next week (today) and still no update.
This clearly has been a long-standing issue caused by the iOS updates and Apple *still* isn’t taking it seriously. What’s the point of paying $1k on a phone and extra for iCloud space, only to have it not work???
this didn't help me. what ended up happening for me -- after clicking "download," it would show "downloading...."
then it went back to the original "download from icloud" link.
eventually, the entire section (attachments, links) DISAPPEARED. i can scroll through the message and see photos/links, but going to "details" there's a blank spot where the "attachments" and "links" section should be.
Hi, I’m having the same problem last year March 2019 my photos and videos etc in iMessages are grey and say zerokb and when I go in my iCloud it says my iMessage conversation are zero kb and also when I click on my iPhone storage and messages it says zero kb. Would your suggestion if the backup and reset also fix my phone? I really want all my photos in iMessage back. Please help
Yesterday, I installed ios14 and this morning, pictures sent on imessage are missing or not showing unless you click on the blank spot where it was supposed to be. Any reason why the stressor on new ios?
I was talking about the messages app. I have noticed many of my pictures are missing. I don’t know what happened to them???? We’re can I find them. Did Apple put them in another place? If so please inform me we’re they are! They were very important to me!
That sucks. I was hoping the new phones wouldn’t suffer from this issue.
Between new hardware and a new iOS, it’s too bad apple didn’t address. They do know about the issue.
Its too small/trivial for a class action, but some of us are paying for too much storage as we can’t go back and edit out some of the larger attachments. Kind of sucks.
Also what steps have you tried to fix this. I’ve had this issue before updating to iOS 13. Since last year March. However my photos and videos etc in iMessage don’t even app when I scroll in my messages. They are grey in the info section and when I scroll in messages they are just a blank file. I really hope we can fix this.
I am actually in the process of doing this. I was reading on some threads at times it has taken up to 20 hours. This may be the case, i will update once it is completed. I have over 10 years of I-messages and images shared, so it may take a very long time.
I also concur this happened when I initially moved to my iphone X and IOS 3 but then one of the updates seemed to refresh / fix the issue - it was more the messages not coming down than the info screen in contacts but hey its still similar
I got a new phone and set it up as new (and then syncing iCloud) hoping that would fix the problem but it didn't. This is the reason that I think this is an iCloud issue, not necessarily an iOS issue. I wish Apple would recognize that.
