iPhone 11 Pro getting HOT

Just received my iPhone 11 Pro and after a few minutes of light use, the back and sides heat up to where I can barely hold the phone. Any ideas?

I have read through all posts and want to offer my 2 cents

My iphone 11 pro was normal until I started using the keynote app. It heated up real fast to a point that it is uncomfortably hot (within 1 min). Whenever I switch to other apps, the phone starts to cool. If I switch keynote on, phone starts cooking again. That’s obviously very weird, then I found this thread.

So following the discussion, I made sure my iOS is up to date on 13.1.1. Then I checked my “battery” tab in the settings, 10 min of using keynote consumed 15% battery, while the whole day of using other apps only make up 85%. Keynote is essential to me in my job, so deleting it is not an option. I also didn’t want to “reset all settings”. Instead, I closed settings>general>background app refresh. That totally fixed the problem

To sum up, here is what you can do if your phone is heating up abnormally

  1. make sure it’s running the latest iOS
  2. check which app consumed the most energy under settings>battery>battery usage by app, delete the problematic app if it’s not essential
  3. close the “background refresh” of that app (check other battery saving tips online, it could be other tricks)
  4. if none of the above worked, reset all setting (settings>general>reset>reset all settings)
  5. still no luck, contact apple for replacement

Once again note that unless your phone goes into thermal shutdown, there is nothing inherently wrong with it getting hot if the processor is being used heavily.

One thing to check when this occurs is if a particular app or app is using a lot of battery; often this behavior is caused by a third party app that is not fully compatible with iOS 13.

on top of that it’s been heating up after just a minute of being on YouTube or Instagram. Which never happened with the iPhone Xs Max.

Are you using them via apps or Safari?

I don't use the YouTube app and have no issues with YouTube in Safari; if it's via the app you may want to check with YouTube to see if they have a fix.

Once again, if it is getting hot, check under Battery to see which apps it shows are using an excessive amount of battery and notify those apps' vendors if any are shown.

Note also that your phone may get warm and use slightly more battery for the first 24 hours after a new iOS release is installed as the phone needs to reindex everything so search can find things.

This also happened to me after a few months of having my phone. I did a hard restart. You can look it up, and it took me a couple of tries to actually do it correctly, but it’s simple. You quickly hit the volume up button, then volume down button, then the power button. It will not ask if you want to power down, it will just automatically do it. My phone is back to normal. Hope it works for you!

Most of the time the problem is not with the hardware, it's the software or more precisely the iOS.

Apple have admitted that there is a problem with some iPhones after upgrading to iOS 14 but this has been going on since the introduction of iOS 13 & I believe the the remedy for the problem in a lot of case's is a full wipe & reset but have a quick google around to find the official reset procedure by Apple.

The reason it gets so hot during charging is partly the battery cells taking on a charge which is normal but also the iPhone is working hard due to the faulty iOS even when not in use.

My iPhone SE original was a waste of space for about a year & it was only one of the last updates for iOS 13 that eventually cured it.

NO WAY ON EARTH AM I "UPGRADING" TO IOS 14.

Apple has a bad product It is not able to handle multiple apps What helps is to close all apps if the phone is over heated The messages are going around this issue No one has a solution Apple needs to address this issue

Then I must have a special iPhone 11 Pro. The only time it gets hot is if I leave it in the sun in my car with navigation running.

And, by the way, these apps you're closing are suspended. They're not really doing anything. If you want to actually cut down on background processing, go to Settings>General>Background App Refresh and disable it.

Apple is not reading here for feedback. If you think you have a problem with your device, you should contact Apple directly. That way, any issues get logged. Should they see a trend, they can address it. Use the Contact Support link at the top right of every page of these forums.

I am having the same issue contacted support and they advised me to do a restore through itunes, ontop of that my battery life is draining abnormally fast. After just 4 hours of me making 2 phone calls lasting less than 10 minutes and listening to spotify while at the gym. Also noted i have my iwatch and head phones at the gym, with apple boasting about the 17hrs of battery life while watching videos i am not pleased with the results in the last two days of owning this phone. The only reason why i contacted support is due to my wife telling me her iphone 11 does not have that issue and finding out this morning shes been streaming music and taking phone calls at work she is at 94% and she has been up since 0400..... I hope the restore fixes the issue i will check back in after a day or two of doing so!
